anyone get a secondary yet?
Would love to apply here, but I'm out of state. What are my chances? Thanks!
you should apply. stony brook only look at state residency for tuition purpose, not for admission. and you can get nys residency after 1 year.
Secondary is up. Email at 11:45 AM EST.
Prompts: It says to limit your response to one page. I'm shooting for the average essay length of schools, 1000-2000ish characters. Also, take note that there is no obvious way to save.
WHAT ASPECTS OF THE FIELD OF MEDICINE MOST INTRIGUE YOU AND DESCRIBE HOW THEY WILL INFLUENCE YOUR MEDICAL PRACTICE.
DESCRIBE AN OBSTACLE YOU'VE OVERCOME AND HOW IT HAS DEFINED YOU.
DESCRIBE AN EXTRACURRICULAR EXPERIENCE THAT YOU HAVE HAD WHICH WILL HELP YOU BECOME A COMPASSIONATE PHYSICIAN AND EXPLAIN WHY.

A thought...I'm a Virginia resident but attend UG at a private school on Long Island. Does attending an undergrad in NY help me at all for a look?
I would think so.

I would think so.
I suppose if nothing else, it gives me a tie to say - "I want to return because I loved school here!"
When they say a page are they talking about single or double spaced? I don't think I could write an entire single spaced essay for each question so I hope it is double spaced.
Since they didn't give a word or character count, I don't think it's too specific. I'm writing enough to answer the question, no more.
Right before the actual application starts there's a hyperlink with "Paynow"Got the secondary invite, I have one question. How do I send them the AMCAS fee waiver for the 100$ supplemental app? They don's specify in the website.

Right, but that's only to actual pay, not to use a fee waiver.
The app says:
FEES
A supplementary application fee of $100 has been imposed by the State University of New York. Please use our on-line mechanism for payment. A request for a fee waiver must be accompanied by a recommendation from the financial aid officer at your school, or a copy of your AMCAS fee waiver. I would call and see if they want you to fax/email/mail that.
The page also says that all subsequent transcripts must be sent directly to the school... My AMCAS was verified a week or so ago, and I have one class this summer (just finished) and a few this fall. Do I have to send them the rest of my grades? What do students usually do with a couple of classes yet to finish?
Summer - Ochem Lab 1
Fall- Ochem Lab 2, Calc, Biochem

What do you think they mean when they ask for "aspects of medicine"? Do you think they mean a specific field like cardiology? Or just a general theme like global health or women's health? Or just something vague about medicine like diagnostics?
Thanks!
Thanks!

for aspect of medicine i thought they were going for whether you want to be a primary care doctor or if you want to go into academia or something like that. that's how i plan to answer it anyway
for the page limits, i don't think anyone wants to read 3 single spaced pages for each app they read, but if you have that much to say, more power to you.
for MSTP i believe this is what you're looking for:
Please describe the basic and/or clinical research fields that you think you might like to explore and/or develop expertise in during your MSTP training. To the extent that you have defined potential specific future clinical interests, please describe the type(s) of medicine that you might be interested in pursuing once you have completed the MSTP.
Please note that these responses do not commit you to a restricted path if you are accepted to SBU; instead, they are used to help us connect you to the interviewers who can best address your potential interests.

me! 🙂
anyone know if the md/phd secondary is the same as for straight md?
also, is the one-page limit PER question or TOTAL?
thanks!
EDIT: forgot to include quote! this was in reply to soundnin about applying md/phd
actually, it says right above the question prompts that it one page PER question. but that seems a bit excessive unless you really have THAT much to say for every question.
For greatest obstacle, can it be a moral dilemma? I have that essay already written out haha
haha
those are the bestGot the secondary invite, I have one question. How do I send them the AMCAS fee waiver for the 100$ supplemental app? They don's specify in the website.
just forwarded the email to admission from FAP notifying that you got it, they responded within minutes and waived it.

Ok I will try that first, thanks.

I believe all new york schools send out secondaries to every applicant.

Hofstra screens. But it's for a 25 MCAT and 3.0.
Is there no way for us to check our status? Secondary was in 7/25 and letter was in 8/3. Did anyone get a complete e-mail?

Correct, no way to check your status online. I did get a complete e-mail. You can always call the admissions office if you have specific questions about your status though.

I just called. They said to wait patiently. Haha. When were you complete and when did you get your complete e-mail?

Hahaha. I received the Stony Brook secondary on 7/21, sent it back to them on 7/21, and received my Complete email on 7/29. Since they've been receiving more and more since then though, I would expect an increased lag time between your submission date and complete date.
Thanks!
Not to be redundant but I submitted 7/27, letters out 8/4 and I still haven't heard anything.... Tried to call again today and the woman did not seem very happy to tell me that there was no way for her to check the receipt of my materials. Any advice? Just wait and
?
? I submitted on 7/30 and I haven't received a complete email yet either... 😕

Is this in addition to the 3 prompts above?
Thanks!
Application Submitted on 7/28, Just received Complete email today (8/25). I think that basically they have alot of applicants this year. Has anyone received an interview yet???
Hey guys,
Brand spankin' new M1 here. We are currently in orientation week, and I think SB likes to get us settled before they start extending interviews. Our last day of orientation is tomorrow, so I expect you'll probably start hearing from them in the next few weeks.
I don't know much because I'm such a nube, but I'll be happy to pop in once in a while to answer questions. Good luck with your applications!
how long does it take them to send you an email about paying for the secondary? i submitted but haven't paid yet...

The link to the payment for the secondary application is on the same page as all the input boxes. Look for a blue link that says "PAY NOW" or search it on the page (it's kind of hidden lol).
