Hi guys, I was wondering if you would be able to help me out with this.

My primary application is already in and verified. I haven't sent my letters from Interfolio to AMCAS because I'm still waiting on one more letter. I am expecting my MCAT scores on August 16th and 28th (I took the exam twice).

I haven't filled out my secondary yet, even though I received it on June 28th when I submitted my primary. My question is, will this be a problem for me since I didn't fill it out for over a month since I received it? My reasoning was that since my MCAT scores weren't going to come in until mid-end of August, that there is no point in getting in the secondary early, and so I spent my time preparing for the MCAT instead.

i don't think it would matter. they send it out early to avoid lag time when people get verified. if you have a good reason for sending it out later, like being out of the country or preparing for an MCAT, it's fine.

What does everyone think about question #2?

"Please provide any additional insight into those personal characteristics you believe make you an ideal candidate for New Jersey Medical School (NJMS)?"

I find this frustrating because I can't seem to think of anything new to write besides what I wrote on my personal statement.

I would try reading about the school's mission statement and focus. Compare that to your own interests and experiences. That may help you to write something different from or to elaborate on the strengths of your personal statement.
 
Also, does NJMS send a confirmation email once you submit the secondary or is it just the fee confirmation?

I received the fee confirmation only post-secondary-receipt. No "you're complete" email. Next email was the interview invite

Thanks -- I didnt do ED, so I haven't heard a communication regarding interviews yet. I emailed just to make sure they did receive my complete secondary. They responded quickly, which was very nice.

No problem, I'm up for answering any questions I can about the school and/or the process. An FYI for you guys which may or may not already be mentioned earlier in the thread: though no regular decision candidates have been accepted yet, there have been interviews for some regular decision candidates (who I imagine were some of the earliest of the earliest applicants). I ran into a couple regular decision intervierwees the day I heard I got in, which I think was the 14th of July.

Much obliged -- I hope, as a North Jersey boy myself, that I get the opportunity to at least interview. Outstanding school. I will certainly post or PM if I can think of any questions.
 
Hey, I was wondering if anyone can help me out with this question on the NJMS secondary:

"If you are not attending college/university full-time as of fall 2011, please describe your planned activities from June 2011 through August 2012."

I'm not attending college, nor have I planned on doing anything medical related. For now, I'm only planning on traveling as much as I can for the year off, in order to enjoy life as much as I can before starting the grueling work of Medical School. So is it bad to write about something non-medicine/ non-academic related like this?

Furthermore, they have a 3000 character limit for this question, which is like 2 paragraphs. I can't write nearly that much without bull****ting. Any suggestions for that? Besides traveling, I also have a long list of books that I want to read and try to learn a foreign language, but I'm not sure if that is even worth writing about, but I might do so just to write more.

I'm not on the ADCOM of course so I can only hypothesize - but I hope my response helps. I imagine that if you have all your ducks in a row (sufficient clinical experience, volunteering, demonstrated passion for medicine), you would be fine writing about your plans to travel and why they are important to you. At least in the interview, and possibly throughout the admissions process, non-medical hobbies/interests is one of the criteria they consider (though I'm sure not the most weighted category).

When my interviewer asked what I was doing this fall and next spring, I told him I am using it to go to Spain for six months. I explained that I wanted to do this before medical school, but also talked about the Spanish-speaking population of patients in Newark and how I hope to work with them. So I did put a bit of a medical spin on it, but my plans to travel before medical school were very well-received by the interviewer who told me he thought that was a great idea.

1.Do NOT bull****. I didn't even write 1000 characters. Write only what you need to write to get your points across. If it is 200 characters so be it.

2. Anecdote, so take it as you will - I will be doing some traveling and my pre-med adviser, who used to be an ad-com, said to leave it out, and that I should only write about professional things for these types of essays, delving into personal when it is really important for them to know my situation. In other words, if you want to spend 2 months visiting family so you can 'keep the connection alive' during medical school, I think that is fine. Don't write about going on Greek pleasure cruises.

3. Learning a foreign language or doing some self studies would totally fall under appropriate!

Called today to check status. Was worried b/c I submitted my secondary July 8 and wasn't verified until Aug 8 and I hadn't received an email saying my app was complete. But it's complete and ready for review.

stats: in-state 34/3.78 with average ECs

I had my interview up here a few weeks ago. Here is some information for anyone who wants it.

The school's community of students and faculty were totally awesome. Everyone was happy to be there. One of the admissions staff played a practical joke and totally got me. My tour guide was very straightforward and told us the good and the bad. My interview was the best interview ever. We just talked about everything going on in the world and about the US healthcare system. I was certainly getting my 'brain picked', but it was more like how a friend picks your brain over a beer than so a medical school interview. None of the 'top five' questions were asked. My interviewer was a character, sold the school really well, and I enjoyed the trip overall. I hope I get in here. :laugh:

Also - They are NOT kidding about the parking. Plan to get there 45 minutes early. The parking garage they instructed us to go to was almost entirely full and I got the last available spot in the whole place.

Can anyone let me know the OOS% for NJMS?

I don't have a copy of the MSAR but applied anyways because my stats are in range and NJ is close to my home state.

Just wondering if I should bother with this secondary, don't want to waste my time/$80 if I have no chance, especially with all these ED acceptances.

~5% -- 171 in-state, 8 OOS. Of 2600 OOS applicants, 23 got interviews.
 
So I basically have a little over a 1% chance of being accepted. Also have absolutely no connection to the school or state. Sweet odds. Might as well just light $80 on fire and spend that 2 hours of my time filling out that secondary pulling grass...
 
i havent heard anything in 3 weeks ughh..i just called them today and they said my app is complete. I just hope I can get an interview soon! Quick question. Am I still early compared to most other applicants or a little behind? My AMCAS was verified last week of July and received and completed all secondaries by Aug. 10th. Since then I have received a good amount of emails saying I am complete and ready for review.

Interview invite today (8/25). Submitted on July 8 but wasn't verified until August 8.

IS, MCAT: 11 V, 10 PS, 13 BS, total = 34Q
cGPA 3.62, sciGPA much higher

When's everyone else interviewing?

Congrats guys! If you don't mind me asking - what date did you submit your secondary, on what date did you get the invite, and on what date is the interview scheduled for?

I'm a nervous wreck because I submitted my secondary several days ago and am still working on my other apps and am afraid that if I get an interview, I won't have enough time to study for it.

Good luck with you guys though, you deserved it.
 
I just found an interview invite in my inbox from SIX days ago... apparently I missed it. S:LDFJ😀SLFKJ!!!!!!!!!!!! AHHH.

I was complete aug 9, and the invite came on aug 19.

Yup, I did. I hope I get to do one, but I'm on a really constricted schedule 🙁 Since they didn't let us know about the student interviews, I scheduled my trip home for right after the tour. Maybe their students are ok with waking up early in the morning?

I called, they gave me ~4 possibile time slots, and I told them which was best for me
