"Greetings from VTC:

Next week the Admissions office of the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine will contact all applicants selected in our December round of acceptances.

As you may recall from our briefings during MMI weekend, VTC has a small class size of 42 students, and our goal for our December acceptances was to select no more than 50 percent of next year’s class. This is so the VTC admissions committee can give full consideration to those applicants who will interview at our winter MMI interview weekends, and whose records have not yet been reviewed by the committee.

If you do not receive a phone call and e-mail from our office December 21-23, your application record moves over to our active-status pool, and your application package will again be fully considered by the admissions committee for our March 2012 round of acceptances.

Please call us if you have any questions. Thank you for your interest in Virginia Tech Carilion.

Good news for those people who haven't gotten an interview yet!

So there are 4 MMI interview days up for consideration in December (August, September, October, and November). I think it's around 40 applicants/interview so around 160 (150 if you count the 10 or so that were accepted in October) being considered for ~21 spots. That's not too bad guys!

Shucks, i was hoping they would release acceptances today since they gave some out last year on dec 15th. Good luck everybody for one of the 20ish spots next week!

PS does anyone remember from their interview about how many acceptances they actually end up giving out? It seems like they wont risk accepting more than 42 people until the interview weekends are over and people start withdrawing their acceptances. Which of course means a lot of waiting for most applicants 👎

got the call as well - surprised to hear so close to the holidays! good luck to the rest of the waiters!

I spoke with the admissions office in November, and they said they will be sending invitations for January interviews in December.

I haven't seen anyone mentioning any invites recently; does anyone know what the deal is? I expect they would at least want to give a month's notice for an interview invite. Are they still going to interview in January?

Maybe they go out this week?

"Greetings from VTC:

Last week the Admissions office of the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine contacted all the applicants selected in our December round of acceptances. Applicants from all four MMI weekends were among those selected in this round.

With so many well-qualified candidates, it was difficult to select only 50 percent of the class.

Your record remains in our active-status pool, and your application package will again be fully considered by the admissions committee for our late March round of acceptances.

Please call us if you have any questions. Thank you for your interest in Virginia Tech Carilion."

congrats to all who got acceptances... i will just wait and be hopeful...

I received an interview invite on Friday for the January date. Haven't made any travel plans yet, does anyone have suggestions for a good inexpensive hotel in the area?

The hotel information should be attached in the email they sent you. I interviewed there couple of months ago but when I went some people stayed at the Cambria Suites hotel which is literally right next to the medical school.

The Cambria is the nicest and closest to the med school, but it's definitely not the cheapest room you can get. When I interviewed I stayed at the Ramada on Franklin Rd, which is about half a mile from VTC and is very cheap, but isn't exactly the classiest place. I had no problems with it and would stay there again, but price was my primary concern and if you are looking for a really nice bed and brand-new bathroom, this probably isn't the place for you. Good luck!

I would 100% not recommend the ramada. They were incredibly unprofessional and even charged me for an extra night! Plus walking across the road in the night was so sketchy while i was trying to get to the reception. Some guy yelled at me the whole time "hey girl" and there were no proper crosswalks. I had the worst time there and heard that the cambria had two tvs and modern furnishings. For $30 more a night, why not pay for the extra convenience of just going down an elevator to get to the reception? I seriously wish someone wouldve told me this before my interview.

ETA The reason I ask is I'm a bit behind the ball in my secondary application for V Tech. Bad bad I know. 🙁 Anyways, money is a bit tight as it is and I'm wondering if it's even worth it to finish the secondary so late in the cycle. Thoughts on this?

My application is:
Biology degree
3.7 GPA
31 MCAT
very strong ECs
shadowing etc
Undergrad research and thesis in seal physiology

They just released a batch of acceptances last week. Next batch is coming up in March.

Do you think it's too late for March rounds though, or would I still have a decent chance if I submitted my app this week? 😕:xf:

I actually thought the price was amazing. They charged me $75 for a night at the discounted rate (I think, I know it was less than 80). For a room with a desk, king sized bed, really nice bathroom, full-sized mirror (gotta look nice), a couch, 2 tvs, 5 minute walk from the school, and the site of the reception...seems kinda crazy to stay anywhere else. For those interviewing in Jan, it was a really nice experience. Don't sweat the MMI at all.

Well I submitted my secondary back in November and got an interview invite in less than two weeks. So...submit if you want.

Edit

Also I should mention my stats were pretty similar to yours.

Been complete since October... last year I didn't get a pre-interview rejection until June!- while working on my next AMCAS lol. Thinking its safe to say I'm out for this round again. 🙁

I'm post-secondary but haven't received an interview invite yet. I have had a hard time over the past few days getting in touch with their admissions department, it keeps going straight to voicemail. Does anyone happen to know if they accept Letter's of interest, update letters, letters of intent, etc.?

I applied in december and I got the interview for the last date in march, and got in. Your stats are good so I say go for it unless you already got an acceptance.

+1 I too would like to know the answer to this Q!

Interview invite today for 2/17 via email! Was complete 10/12 and sent in an update letter 1/18. 30/3.83

Does anyone know how much funding from the NIH VTC received last year or in '10?

Interview invite for Feb 18th. OOS 3.0/36. Is Feb the last batch of interviews? Although I'm research heavy my PS/focus of my application is clinical and not research at all...so didn't expect VTech invite lol.

ps. no one has really answered this question but out of 240 invites, how many are ultimately offered acceptances, even if there is only "42" at a given time? Is the WL ranked?

Also as an aside, since we have MMI's, do we still write any thank you notes? I assume no?

those of you who have stayed at the Cambria, did they only give you the special Interviewee rate of $79 for FRIDAY night but not SATURDAY night? They told me I'd have to pay the regular rate for Saturday...

If you can remember all of the names, I'd say go for it. When I had an MMI at another school, though, I couldn't remember all of the names- and not all of them were faculty/staff.

I paid $99 per night for friday night and saturday night. It said $99 was the student rate on the VTC sheet so I mentioned that on the phone. Oops! Could have saved $40 if i insisted on $79/night.. Oh well!

DIVA01x, I stayed at the Cambria Suites January 20 and 21st (Friday & Saturday); I paid the special $79 interviewee rate for Friday and the $99 Carilion rate for Saturday. However, the room is a suite so it'll have a microwave, mini fridge, and coffee maker. I saved money Saturday by bringing along microwavable snacks with me (popcorn, udon bowls, hot cocoa mix, etc) and fruit instead of purchasing dinner Saturday night. The hotel also has a pool and hot tub, which are nice perks after a day of being on your feet. They also have free wifi and free wireless printing, so it's easy to check in online and print your boarding pass ahead of time. Oh, and the hotel shuttle does not run on Saturdays or Sundays, so bring cash for a cab. Overall, the extra $20 is totally worth it. PM me if you have any other questions! Congrats on the interview. Have fun, and best of luck!!

Well...I guess that's it for me. Final interviews should be on 2/18 and I haven't heard anything, even after sending a letter of interest right after I was completed. 🙁

Great job to everyone and good luck! 🙂

Just write a thank you note to the interviewer for the traditional interview who is on the committee. That is what I did.

Same for me. $79 Friday and I think $89 or 95 (?) Saturday. I would highly recommend Fork in the Alley to relax after the interview. They have great pizza and it is owned by one of the docs at Carilion. They have a few decent local draft beers as well.

Does anyone know if there are going to be more interview invites sent out? Also, when do you think the last interview date might be?

I sent in a letter update as well as an email asking for confirmation of the receipt of my letter update, but I haven't heard anything back yet. =\

2/18 is the last interview date. they only have like 6 dates total (one per mo). I received my invite like 2 wks ago...

Ahh I see. That's not a good sign for me then since that's this upcoming weekend haha. So I guess they're not extending interviews until March like last year?

Sorry, i dont think they are this year. This is straight from an informational email VTC sends when they receive your amcas ap:

"Interview Invitation - our interviews for this application cycle will take place on the VTCSOM campus, in Roanoke, Virginia, on selected weekends from August 2011 to February 2012"

Good luck with your other applications! This process blows.

For anyone who has already interviewed, does anybody know what happens to our applications after their late-march round of acceptances? Do we stay in the never ending "active-status pool" until people start withdrawing acceptances or does it get converted to a ranked waitlist or will they reject some/waitlist others, etc.? My interview was a long time ago and i dont remember if they brought that up...

Great question! Also, has anyone had any luck calling the admissions office? It goes straight to voicemail, and I'm calling at reasonable week-day hours. Does anyone know their schedule?

Freed up a spot for someone today. Good luck everybody!

anyone look for the fafsa code for this bad boy? are we just supposed to use virginia tech's because i don't see a separate one anywhere...

Yeah i called them awhile ago and they said to use the university's school code and they do not have a separate one. I just need them to accept me so i can add them to my fafsa  :xf:

Good luck to everyone waiting for the march round of acceptances!

Just got the call this afternoon! Super excited! 😍

So any future classmates on here?
