How much of a change is this number from previous years? I think earlier in this thread someone mentioned the adcom would make 180 offers initially. Are they hoping to use the waitlist less this year?
I believe this number of acceptances is pretty standard for Yale. Think about it this way - the same top 5 (or however many) medical schools all accept pretty much the same group of students. Like I said above, I would not be surprised if 70-80 of these students matriculated and they go to the waitlist for the remainder.

Hi Everyone,

Any news on financial aid or merit scholarships?

Thank you

Here's a half hour documentary on Yale Med. Pretty cool!

To current YSM students, do you know the academic calendar for next year? When do classes end in December, begin in January and end for the summer? When is spring break 2013? Many thanks!

(I found the 2012 enrollment website, but it was just a placeholder page.)

Hey eHombre,

This is the only info. I have for next semester:

".Matriculation Day and the White Coat Ceremony are both on Thursday August 16. You need to arrive here around 8:00am for the registration activities which will go all day. The white coat ceremony is at 4:00. The first day of class is August 29.."

Thanks for checking!

Wow, those look like really generous winter and spring breaks. How long are the exam periods, typically?

Who's going to the Yale Club event this Saturday in NY? Also, how should we dress for this???

I'll be there. Barbara said business casual on the c/o 2016 Facebook page. A Google search tells me that that means slacks and a nice shirt, maybe a blazer for bonus points 😉.

Anyone know what the unit loan amount is for next year?

I asked this at the luncheon this past Saturday; they quoted the unit loan at approx. 24.5K.

Do we know approximately when we can expect to hear back from the financial aid department?

I called earlier today, and they said that those of us who have all documentation can expect our packages any day now 🙂

Thanks for checking!

Exam periods are usually all of break. Most people usually take their exams during the first few days, though.

Congratulations to everyone who got accepted!!!!

Can you post your stats?

Are you saying that the exams (qualifiers) are taken online?

Yes, ALL exams at Yale are taken online. You can take them whenever you like during the exam period (usually 2-4 weeks, depending on the time of year). That means you can take your qualifier in the Caribbean while sipping on piña coladas if you want.

Interesting. I see Yale is really trying to minimize stress for students. But what about anatomy practicals? Are those also taken online?

We have two optional anatomy practicals that are obviously in class. These can be taken on your own, in a group, or not at all (called a self assessment). We also have three online qualifiers that are taken just like any other exam. And yes, they really do a great job minimizing stress.

Financial aid report came- can't afford to go here! Withdrawing 🙁... good luck to the waitlisters!

Same here.. I've only gotten two (need-based) financial aid packages so far but for whatever reason they differed substantially. Peace out, New Haven!🙁 👍

Same here. I got a great aid package at Yale and an awful one at Hopkins, so I withdrew from Hopkins. So strange how different the math can be between 'need-based' institutions.

Good luck at Hopkins!

To people who have done the financial aid forms:
Where do you find your "Yale ID Number"/ what did you put there?

Its the 9 digit number that is located in the upper right hand corner of your financial aid award letter (under the date).

If you haven't received your award letter, which means that you're just filling out the initial forms to apply for financial aid, just leave the "Yale ID Number" space empty. That's what I did when I filled out my forms.

For waitlisted applicants:

I just called the admissions office, and we are supposed to receive an email in the coming week or two about the waitlist call-in hours, where we can speak with Dr. Silverman about our specific position on the waitlist.

Good luck! 🙂

May is around the corner! This is were things get exciting for us wait-listers!

Just withdrew my application. Hopefully that opens up a spot for someone here!

Does anyone know when we will find out about our Tier?

Don't know for sure, but based on last year's thread people found out about tiers on May 18th. There were a few who were accepted off the waitlist on the 16th, even before tiers were released.

Does anybody have any insight as to why there are hardly any hispanic students at Yale SOM? According to the demographics for New Haven, it would seem that there would be a larger hispanic presence at Yale. Any current students have any input?

In the most recent classes that seems to the case, as far as I can tell. However, in 2010, there were 38 matriculated Hispanic MD students (8%) across all class-years, according to AAMC data. There were 36 matriculated black MD students (7%). These numbers are slightly lower than Yale's peer schools, but not remarkably low.

The 8% seems OK. I guess it was just the the last 2 incoming classes that had maybe 2 hispanics each, which seems really low.

Maybe this year they took more because the last two years were so low?

I was talking about all the hispanic people I saw there, which includes the M1s and M2s hosting the event.

Tell you the truth, I didn't even think about the number of hispanic people accepted. Its always low wherever you go. I was usually the token hispanic guy at all the interviews that I attended this past cycle.

It is what it is man. Don't worry too much about it.

Looks like the "Here's your Tier" email has been sent out. Congrats to everyone still in the running, and especially to you all in Group 1!!

Is there any resource to help speculate chances for those in Group 2? Is there any solid sense of the size of the waitlist? What I've found is almost entirely speculative.

Does anyone know what the call hours are all about? Do they offer info beyond tier or does it tend to function like a second interview?

I can't imagine that it's more than 100.

Are you sure? If I recall correctly, someone earlier in this thread mentioned ~230 direct acceptances were sent out, and I think my interview packet they interviewed around 800 last year...Does Yale really reject that many people post-interview? Or is it just that a large amount decline the WL position for whatever reason?

It's hard to believe Yale would/could conduct mini-interviews over the phone given time constraints and the number of WL'd applicants, but I wish there were more transparency about the details of the call. What new information are they going to offer applicants beyond our position on the waitlist? If it is a mini-interview, what kind of information are they seeking from us?

Would love to hear from past applicants who have taken advantage of the call-in hours (or current applicants who use today's hours).

Good luck to all!

EDIT: This thread is so quiet... where are you guys? 🙂 I've been calling since 1:30 but haven't been able to get through. Reminds me of calling radio stations to get a prize. According to last year's thread, Tier 2 people started receiving acceptances in May, so there's reason to be cautiously optimistic if you fall into that group.

I've been trying as well since 1:30, no luck. Looks like we're reaching the end for today, but hopefully some SDNer got through at somepoint and would be kind enough to let us know any general information he or she found out.
