  1. Fellow [Any Field]
I was looking through the list of events / courses / seminars during the APA meeting this year, and there are a lot of sessions that I would like to go to that overlap with each other.

For some of these, like the sessions for residents and fellows I assume that some repeat and were done last year.

So, this may be a long shot, but I was wondering if anyone has gone to these courses / workshops and what they thought of them:

-Patient Suicide During Psychiatric Residency: A Workshop Discussion

-Making the Most of Your Chief Year: Chief Resident's Forum I and II (I don't know either if these are same or different)

-Workshop: Training Global Psychiatrists: Exploring Educational Opportunities for Residents in Global Mental Health

-Professional Transitions: The PGY-4 Journey Through Terminations and Graduation to 'Real Life'

Any reviews appreciated.

All of the resident workshops are pretty good, most are excellent.

The chiefs workshop can be helpful, especially if you want to have questions answered regarding how to do certain operational things.

For example, how are your programs dealing with the new work hours etc.
Its also good to learn what perks chiefs/residents have, can be good to arm-twist your chair/training director to throw some extra goods your way.

I would ask if there are any programs paying PGY3/4s to moonlight to cover the extra work. I know there are some, but it would be nice to get that conversation started. You can ask your co-chiefs about all kinds of things...what to do when an attending isn't doing their job etc etc.

Then again, you are going to be in Hawaii so pick and choose wisely!

Hmm, that sounds like it could be helpful. The problem is that it's at the same time as Resnick's Detection of Malingering course, and I really want to go to that too. Since it is a 'workshop' do you know if that means it's a small group discussion that would not be helpful to have someon else go and tape record it? Otherwise, if they allow it I might be able to ask someone to go and record it.

Thanks!

Is anyone concerned about the radiation levels in Hawaii?? offtrack, I know but just curious what people think.

🙄
I'm not worried

More concerned with how ridiculous I'll look on a surfboard being as I've never surfed...or that I might blind people with my incredibly pasty belly

Stick to waikiki and you'll be in the majority. A haole newbie surfer isn't going to hit the swells where the locals go. The beaches outside most of the waikiki hotels have 1-2' waves and lots of cheap instruction. You'll be in good company and it's lots of fun.

Cool, thanks for the information!

You know, I think there are usually leaders assigned to do it and as a leader of the the workshop you have some latitude over how you want to run it. You are introduced, you ask some questions, most good, some ridiculous (you know how it goes) and then you break off into small groups, reconvene and do it a few times over a range of topics. I don't know if it is still done like this as it is kind of up to the Chiefs who lead the conference but small groups are very likely to be a part of it.

The Resnick Lecture...hmmm, ask one of the chiefs from Case to give you their ppts. He lectures there several times a year and they have an incredible amount of exposure to him. Win-win...you can contact them in advance through the chiefs email listserve.

That's a great idea; thank you -- I think I will do just that. I don't know how protected the ppts are, but it doesn't hurt to ask I suppose.
