2011 APPIC Internship Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
If it makes you feel any better, I also have yet to hear anything (other than 1 quick rejection) from any west coast sites. The computer here at this clinic is mind-numbingly slow, otherwise I'd try pulling up last year's thread to see when California sites started sending out invites.

"Was just down in the SPC kicking it with some G's on the west side." —Cartman

I also haven't heard from my West Coast sites (except rejection from Seattle VA). And they're the most expensive planes tickets to buy (since I'm on East Coast)! So I need to hear soon too. Where are you waiting to hear from?

Did anyone just get the "OOPS that interview invite was not meant for you" email from VA Baltimore UMB? WTF?!?!?

OMG yes!!!! that's why I deleted my last post!!!! Talk about lacking professionalism. I was so stoked, now I just feel like crap 👎

Congrats Aresta!! I'm still keeping my fingers crossed for that one...
Since the secretary is making the calls, it may take a while. Maybe they're going by last names (I'm L- right in the middle). I am sending you positive energy !!!! Hope you hear good news too!

oh nice, I'm browsing from a smart phone that is not so smart otherwise I'd take a gander

I got that, but never recieved an initial interview offer. Sounds like some people actually got an email offering them an interview, followed by an email taking it away.

UW Madison also sent out invites (via email) this afternoon.

Same happened to me... I got the "oops, we didn't mean to invite you for an interview email", but never got an email inviting me in the first place. That was crappy all around.

Congratulations on the interview. Do you mind saying whether it was for the counseling center? or the Departments of Psychiatry & Rehabilitation Medicine. Thanks.

OK I am breaking my silence! Is anyone else applying to health psych/behavioral medicine tracks?

Awww, thanks. I'm keeping my fingers crossed, I'm S- 🙂

Just got an interview from Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago!

Sorry, it was Dept of Psychiatry & Rehab Medicine at UW Madison

Just went back and read one of my friend's blogs from last year...she got three invites on the 1st to three of my top schools. (Mailman, Oklahoma, and Kennedy Krieger - all peds sites...) Let the panic ensue...

They are all excellent sites. I've had friends at Mailman and KK and they loved the year....a lot of work though.

I applied there and they did not have tracks, its a generalist model program. My invite came in a phone call rather than an email btw...

Super nice staff. Their generalist training is both a strength and weakness, depending on your area(s) of interest. Good exposure for someone who is considering a VA career.

I got it too... check your spam folders for the original invite. How do they make a mistake like this?

If they put such little time into rejection letter, sounds like your better off without them!

Actually it really WAS very detailed. They even gave the most common reasons people did not get invited. Made it worse. lol

So, lets assume that you have back to back interviews in fairly large cities. For example, an interview in San Francisco on a Monday and an interview in San Diego on Tuesday (I understand this isn't ideal, but let's assume for a moment you don't have any other choice). Do you end up taking your luggage with you to the interview? I didn't plan on renting cars in big cities, so I was just wondering how people have handled situations like this in the past.

Last year I had my hotel hold my bag. You can also rent a locker at the airport. I didn't see anyone at interviews with luggage...

Man, today is brutal...someone CALL ME!

Right? Nothing here either.... :eyebrow:

Thanks. I applied to the counseling center there and was curious.

By the way last year about 60 sites were posted as offering interviews or sending out rejections between November 30 (Mon.) until December 5 (Sat.). So it should be a busy week. I compiled the list of those sites and was thinking of posting last year's list but had second thoughts that it may cause anxiety to go through the roof. However, the west coast sites that members were asking for that sent out interviews LAST YEAR between December 1-5, 2009 were:

UCLA-Semel
Sharp Healthcare
Tarzana Treatment Centers
UC Berkeley
St. John's Child
Kaiser San Diego
Portland VA
SF VA
Pacific Clinics (Pasadena)
Western Psychological

See how productive I am being 😛 I seem to find comfort in creating various semi-useless lists these days.

Hang in there fellow counseling center applicants we may not hear anything until next week 🙁

2 friends heard from Jersey VA with invitations. they were called on the telephone.

Thanks! I received an email. Interview dates offered are 1/6, 1/10, 1/13, 1/20, and 1/27. Good luck!

Thanks, congrats again!

This process is causing so much anxiety, knowing people have heard from sites I applied to, but I still haven't heard a word is the worst bit of it... Makes me wish they would send out all the rejections first, before staggering the acceptances (I know someone else who got an interview at Children's Memorial a week and a half ago, also by email)

I hear you! People say that "no news is good news;" however, knowing that others have been hearing for over a week is more than a bit unsettling!

Yeah, I completely agree about the staggering of interview offers. I didn't know that Children's Memorial had started sending interview offers (since no one had posted to this site yet). Kinda makes you wonder if there are advantages to being that that 1st round email list...

I agree! No news seems more like bad news than good news to me. At least that's how I'm interpreting it.

I bet it doesn't give any advantage, and is probably more closely related to the speediness of the individual reviewing your application than your qualifications to be at the site or their interest in you!

Yes, she did hear a bit ago, but I hesitate to post comments about sites other people hear from, since its secondhand information.

That is a great way to look at it! You helped alleviate my fears a bit!

Another friend heard from Sepulveda VA in LA (rejection)

So to be clear - some sites send out staggered invites (which makes sense because I haven't heard from some sites listed as having sent invites) and I assume some sites also send out staggered rejections? This is a mind-bending process.

though I haven't gotten a rejection, this staggering concept has already caused one conflict for me as far as interview dates. I'm contemplating whether to try to reschedule one interview but it's at a top choice so I dont know🙁

I don't know, I'm thinking you stick with interviews you've already committed to (and who gave the courtesy of letting you know earlier), especially if the already scheduled interview(s) are at top choice sites.

gah, you're probably right. I hate decisions this is why i'm single.

Two rejections, my first contact from sites this year... ugh. Both via email.

One was the Sepulveda VA... the other, Metropolitan State Hospital. Not fun.👎

I received an email rejection from the Milwaukee VA tonight. Oh well, one less trip to make, I guess. At least it wasn't in my pre-interview top 5.

Does everyone else have their sites ranked already, even though they are sure to change?

I definitely have mine ranked already! I am sure it will change, but it somehow feels helpful to me to know how I feel about the sites going into the process. That said, I lost my #4 site today which was rough... even if I hadn't ranked them in my excel spreadsheet, it still would have stung because I did really like the site--and thought I had a shot. Ah well. Sorry to hear about the Milwaukee VA, Irish. 👎

Better luck to all of us tomorrow... :xf:

I found some errors on my application that can't be changed (e.g. missing response to a Professional Conduct question) :scared: I've already sent out emails notifying sites about the mistake. How much of a negative impact will this have? Ugh...want it to be over.

Not sure if anyone here is applying to Canadian sites, but thought I'd post this anyway. 🙂

Got an email invite from the University of Manitoba (Adult track) this afternoon!

Does anyone know...what would be the advantage or the reasoning behind the staggered invites or rejections? Does it just ease the process of notification? Manage the flow of email traffic or phone calls?

me!😀 I've only heard from 3 sites thus far. At this point, I'm 2 for 3. woot!

Yay, ok there is someone else on here. I have only heard from 2 so far--rejection from VA Puget Sound Seattle and invite from Medical College of GA.

Oklahoma Health Consortium has sent out invites via e-mail.

Hi I'm new, but here are two sites I've heard from (both rejections)
University of Michigan- Institute for Human Adjustment
Institute for Child and Family Health (I have also heard of people getting interviews here).

All contacts were via email.

yes, thanks for the productivity! 🙂

The OK Health Consortium doesn't have tracks. You might be thinking about the OU Health Sciences Center (HSC) which is a separate internship, though also affiliated with OU, and one that I applied to as well.

That I was, thanks for clarifying! (And easing my panic a little.)
