Note that some sites do not send out en masse interview invites. This was one of the most anxiety-inducing things for me last year. I interviewed at one site that my friend heard about more than a week before me, and I'd assumed I wasn't getting an interview. Not so. So until you get that rejection email....assume nothing!
Thank you for that, ClinicalTrainee. I'm currently debating how much I want to follow this thread. I want to stay updated and I love hearing about where people are interviewing, but I also don't want to freak out if people post about hearing from a site I applied to!

that is good to know. I've already ruled out a site but maybe I should wait haha.
Question for yall...does anyone have a specific plan in mind for addressing inappropriate questions (possibly some that go against APA guidelines) asked during interviews? I'm asking b/c I've heard past interviewees say that some sites asked them things like are they married, do they have kids, asking for or sharing specific ranking info, etc.
*Note - this is not in reference to any specific site. I just have an interview coming up (info already posted by others on this thread) and want to be prepared for a variety of questions and am not sure how to address questions like those listed above IF they come up. Some info I don't mind sharing (ie: marital status, kids) but I wouldn't want to indirectly encourage questions that go against APA policy. Thoughts?

Do you mind telling me when you sent in your application to SF VA? I applied there and I have not heard anything. I haven't heard from any of my sites yet, but I realize it is still early. The waiting is already killing me. A whole month until notification deadline for most places!
If it helps...there can be quite a process for application review, so it can take time. Many sites go through a multi-reviewer process where applications are reviewed independently, scored/ranked, and then the reviewers meet to discuss applications. I know when I reviewed applications it took awhile to read through everything, so having it take time isn't necessarily a bad thing.
The sites are aware that the applicants are stressed, but they also want to make sure they give each application a fair shot and try and identify the best applicants to bring in for interviews. The fit is just as important to the site as it is to the applicant.

I don't mind at all--it's one of the sites that I kept reviewing up until the day before the deadline, so I submitted my app on 10/31. I didn't think that I was a particularly good match overall for the program, but I decided to apply anyway given that I'd already completed the materials. You win some, you lose some.
I dont exactly have inside info or anything, but I did talk with a psychologist there when I was at APA and he was candid about his confusion regarding how exactly the review/elimination process is run there. He was not shy about how most of the interns they accept have had their own grants, multiple pubs, and were generally more productive and "academic" than he has ever cared to be...
A typo doesn't matter, but a poorly written and conceptualized essay will matter.
Glad you came out of lurking TherapyCats and posted. I know it can be anxiety producing to see people getting interviews at places we applied to but it can also be a supportive experience as we experience both joy and disappointments in this process.
I purposely messed up the above sentence to see if the irony was spotted. Nobody seemed to get the joke...

I heard from a site (FMC Rochester) for the first time today in the form of a rejection email. 🙁 I am a little bummed, but more freaked out with thoughts like, "What if all the sites feel the same way and I don't get any interviews?" I applied to 17 sites and I realize that this is just one and I still have 16 left but I am still freaked out. Ever since I got that email this morning I get butterflies in my stomach every time I get a new email or the phone rings! This is going to be a long month.
My first contact was last Friday at 5pm in the form of a rejection email from Rush University's neuropsych track. Wahhh Wahhh =\ keeping my fingers crossed for the other 21 I applied to! =)
I am so sorry. We all know that even getting a 50% interview rate is fantastic but its difficult when the first notice you get is a rejection. I hope you get your first interview invite soon. I agree with you that this is going to be a long month. Hang in there.

Ahh....why would you provide an email contact that you don't use?
Why not take like 5 seconds to check the email you don't regularly use. If you don't want to take the time to do that, have you considered forwarding email from the email you do not use to the one that you regularly access.
I have received 3 interviews thus far: 2 were via email and one was by initial telephone contact. So my guess is that it can vary.

i don't use it as often because it is my 2ndry email.
I don't need 10000 email addresses.

This is definitely a hard time/month! I haven't heard from anyone yet but would not want rejections first. That said, the people in my program from last year said that overall, the rejections come earlier. That may not always be totally true, but apparently that's the trend. That makes me feel at least a little better.

Thanks to all for the updates/support, hopefully good news will start to come in soon. My advisors also said that rejections tend to come earlier, especially from sites with arbitrary cutoffs (hours, psy.d., etc). Good luck to all!

Yes, I am also a college counseling center person. I have an interview scheduled with Vanderbilt CC and just had a 30 minute phone- I guess it could be called pre-interview- with James Madison University. Otherwise, other than confirmations of completed applications I haven't heard anything. I know counseling centers tend to notify in December- likely because they are so busy throughout the fall semester. Even with knowing all that its still hard to wait!

Thanks Psychgal and others. A friend told me yesterday that rejections might come earlier than interview invites. Her theory is that more competitive sites will likely get rid of as many people as possible early on to start narrowing it down. This makes some sense. My rejection email said they had a lot more applicants than in past years and that they were having to cut it down a lot. I am going to stick with this theory to keep my anxiety down. 🙂 My application is good, but it is just paper. They don't know me and my personality. We are not people to the people reviewing our applications until we are there for an interview. They have to go by what they see on paper and their best guesses, just like we do when reading brochures and choosing where to apply. We should try not to take the rejections personally.

Bellevue has sent out adult and child track interview invitations.
I received an interview for the Forensic Track.
Does anyone have any sense (or insider information) about whether Bellevue is done with invites? Seems like they've sent out a whole lot.

From what I hear, some sites send out rejections last so that they can keep a pool of applicants waiting in case others can't make the interview. Like a wait-list I guess
I wouldn't at all be surprised if that's how it worked at many institutions: send out the definite rejections (for whatever reason--didn't make cut-offs, poor fit with the program, etc.) early on, and keep a stack of "maybes" on hand in case potentials decline the interview offer.
I wondered about this too and guessed that this might occur, but I think that all sites do this differently. What stinks is we really don't know and we just have to wait and see.

I also applied only to counseling centers, and have not heard back yet from any of the 25 regarding interviews. I have heard from a few that they have my completed applications though. At least that takes away some of the anxiety. Good luck to all! I'll post on here if I hear back from any places.
Also, just throwing this out there, do people think that it would be beneficial or not to have a thread just for internship interviews/rejection notices? They have a thread for that for the grad school app process, but not for the internship. Although an internship one might just raise people's anxiety levels too much. Just a thought!

Remember that you are dealing with a WIDE variety of institutions in terms of size, staffing, schedules, etc. Each will have a different way of processing apps and batching responses. Many variables unrelated to you will effect when and how you will hear more news and it is not fair to yourself (or sites) to try to interpret the timing or when you individually hear relative to classmates or what is happening at other sites. It is an ordeal to wait, no question. But as long as you have not heard you are still in the running. This is definitely a time to practice distress tolerance and radical acceptance and to get everything done that you can on the dissertation (while also eating chocolate.)

On a somewhat related note, and to attest to the importance of T4C's suggestion of keeping a calendar with potential interview dates--does anyone happen to know how poorly committees look upon a candidate if they request to reschedule their appointment?
I've only heard back from three sites thus far, and I already have a potential conflict. Is this something that they've come to expect from time to time, or would it generally be viewed negatively (i.e., as unprofessional)? I'd hate to shoot myself in the foot before ever actually meeting anyone at the site.

A friend heard from the Nationwide neuro track today in the form of email rejection. Nothing from the peds track yet which is what I am waiting on.
The general consensus from previous forums is that sites expect it and it's not a huge deal. I went through last night and wrote down all the potential dates on a calendar in pencil and then figured out how it could all work out to not have overlapping days. That way IF I get an interview I at least know what day is my first choice. I've probably jinxed myself out of getting multiple offers by making the calendar 😛 but at least I'll be prepared!
Very good to know, thank you. I was able to finagle my way through the current issue without having to reschedule, but at least now I know that if it comes up again in the future, it won't be an auto-disqualifier.
That being said, I've just done the same as you, and have written down all of the potential dates (for those sites that list them) on a calendar. I figure of all the possible problems to arise, this at least falls on the more pleasant end of the spectrum.
