2011 APPIC Internship Application Thread

How will you look/open your match email?
Let your spouse/sig other do it? Stare at it in the In-box for an hour before you have the guts to open it? Open it and cover your eyes and peak? Look at it wincing with only one eye open? Open it, cover your eyes, and then peak through to see if can just see if you matched ....then close them again and wait and then see where?

Oh the choices...

Also, for those on the west coast, we should expect it to be there by 7am? Right? Any chance it would come significantly before this (6am)?

I have decided I will do the following:

I am going to wait until the house is empty, and then I'm going to wake up, and I'm going to make myself a nice stiff drink. I will consume all of said drink, then, I will open the email....

depending on the outcome, I might be having another drink and then crawling back into bed for the rest of the day or sending emails to friends and family

Does anyone have any tips on getting good sleep that are working for them, other than taking meds?

When I'm having a lot of difficulty falling asleep, I get up, I make myself a cup of sleepy time tea and then I take my tea and a dense psych article with me to the couch. Inevitably, within 15-20 minutes I get really drowsy, and I go back to bed.

And so the cycle of research is completed.

7 days guys!!!!!! In a week exactly, we will find out.

Yes sleep is important - Ambien, Melotonin, sleepytime/camomille tea, I use them all (well not together on the same night). I'm trying very hard to squeeze in social engagements (although I can't seem to stop talking about internship during these social engagements), and get some work/manuscripts done and out of the way. It's not been easy. However, NYC suddenly has spring weather (60s!) so I am going to do some self-care and take my dog to the dogrun.

I actually have been feeling the opposite lately--given how much thought and time the whole process has monopolized for the past 3-4 months, I've preferred not talking about internships and match for the past week or two. I don't know that I'd say it's causing me any unnecessarily undue anxiety, but there are just so many other things that I've partially neglected throughout the process.

As for sleep, I'm very fortunate in that I've never had much of a problem passing out (quite the opposite, actually; borderline narcolepsy anyone?). However, like another poster mentioned, even I will notice an improvement in sleep quality on the days I go to the gym vs. those I don't.

is it worse to think about the match and check this thread: a) morning or b) night?

Gah! I hate waiting!

Anyone have a sense of how folks generally rank sites geographically? My top pick is in the middle of the midwest in a smaller city. I hear folks generally don't go for those over, say, Boston/Florida/Cali.

I think I'm just trying to assuage my fear of not matching there. Humor me!

Probably some truth to that overall, but its also common for people to apply relatively locally too...in addition to broadly across the county. Thus, Midwest sites that might have lower overall numbers of applicants are still likely to have a fair share of applicants who applied there (and rank the site highly) because of the fact that that were they are located near there and want to stay there. I dont think any amount of guess work can come close to giving you a glimpse at your odds for one particualr site.

A big portion of where you ultimately end up seems to come from where else their applicants ranked and if they happened to match to some other place instead of that one cause it was ahead on their list...arghhh!! I've tried many times to picture in my head the rank list of my top site and then guesstimate how many of those people are likley to be skipped over in the computer because they happened to go somewhere else....this sucks!!

Wow I just killed 3 hours editing 4 wikipedia sites. match day can't come soon enough

I spent the afternoon organizing my bathroom drawers and cabinets and cleaning. I think I will tackle the closets next. I am finding that throwing out stuff and organizing is great stress relief and a good distraction! Maybe by Friday my whole apartment will be spotless and organized!

I don't find the same stress relief in cleaning and organizing. But I have a strong interest in and concern for your stress management, and will gladly allow you to clean and organize my place when yours is finished.

Tuesday...

I decided to entertain myself by getting a new crown put on tomorrow. 🙂 That should take my mind of things for a little while!

I'm also planning on going with the allowing my spouse to check option. That way he can present whatever the results are in the most positive light.

#1 "Yay! You got your #1 choice!"
#2 "Yay! You don't have to move and no assessments!"
#3 "Yay! You don't have to move!"
#4 "Yay! You get to spend a year with your family!"
#5 "Yay...at least it's not Alaska"
#6 "Yay, the home of Dr Pepper!!"
#7 "Yay...now we can invest in your first firearm to keep you safe."
#8 "Yay, how often do you get the chance to watch the Kentucky Derby??"

No match - "yay - you can open your own craigslist furniture flipping business!"

See how they all start with yay? It's a good plan I think...

😀

You've inspired me to come up with my own "Yay!" list. I've managed to schedule myself pretty tightly this week, but I've got Thursday night open. I'll do it then - it'll be a welcome distraction!

I love it! Great positive reframing!! I may have to jump on board this bandwagon.

Only two more mornings of not knowing!!!

I love it! Trying to think of my own Yay list as well. Can't wait until Friday morning is over.

Assuming our results come by 7am Central Time (which seems roughly accurate from the past few years as far as I can remember), we only have 2 days, 17 hours, & 24 mins from right now. But who's counting, right?

10 am EST would be 9am CST...not 7am.

As I understand it those who match will receive a phone call from their internship training director sometime after 11am EST. This is oddly distressing to me because I see clients from 9am-6:30pm MT (or 11am-8:30pm EST). I do have a lunch (which is actually supervision, but I could take or return a call). If I make it through the hurdle of matching Friday morning, how important is it to be available to take the call that day? Does anyone else have this concern as well?

I request that Friday off months ago...😀

I thought about it, but I'm so broke from taking January off. Plus I get the most hours on Fridays. If I'm lucky (i.e., people show up) I'll get 2 hours today :/

10 am EST would be 9am CST...not 7am.

They say that every year, but from what I can recall, match emails are usually sent out a few hours before that (although I may be wrong). I know there have been a few times where people have posted on fb that they matched before 7am Central. Our program meets at 9am every Friday and for the past four years the match emails have gone out prior to that meeting. Last year the email went out at 7:15 Central time.

@edified - I don't think it's important at all that you are available for the call. I'm sure TDs understand that we have work and clients and just are wanting to welcome us to the program anyway.

I also took the day off though and made my husband take the day off. 🙂 I need moral support!

If the email doesn't come by 7:15 EST I'm going to be freakin' out - only because that's the time I've been telling myself. I HATE that it's so unpredictable...

Two years ago our college email server delayed the delivery of all the match emails and NO ONE heard before the 10am deadline where you can check the online database. My labmate was pretty much inconsolable (but did match!!) I can't handle anything like that.

Wow, thats like 5:15am here. Guess ill be setting that the alarm for really early that morning...if I can sleep at all that is.

Do folks generally post on FB that they matched?

On the one hand I want to, because a lot of folks i know are eager to hear. Plus it will be a convenient way to share with less significant (but still important) others. On the other hand, I would feel guilty if (and I'm being optimistic here  ) if I matched and a peer or peers did not. Only 1 person that I was aware of from previous cohorts in my program shared the match outcome or placement on FB (and that person was, uh, not always the most professional/considerate of individuals).

I like the idea of the "yay" list! I may have to do one too 🙂

BTW, a supervisor told me today that he has heard through his connections that match results are already finalized. ughhhh

Well I kinda figured it was all said and done within literally minutes of the ranking deadline 2 weeks ago. The rest of the time was just foir double and triple checks, from what I understand.

In our program it's been customary to post "matched" on fb. Of course, occasionally there is someone who doesn't match, and we're all very sensitive to that. I don't think posting is inconsiderate. I wouldn't be offended if I didn't match and my friends posted that they did. In fact I'd probably be happy to hear they did, and I'm sure my fb friends in the match feel the same way.

Yes, I was actually worried about this too. Not because I have clients that day (I took the day off!) but because I have no idea what we are going to say to each other?!?! Also, I'm worried that if I match to one of my lower ranked choices it will be hard to be excited, especially right after receiving the news. Although, I guess I would also just be excited that I matched....

My guess is that the TD will call to verify the results (i.e., "we see you've matched to our site, excellent! Are you seeing the same thing?"), let you know when your official offer letter is coming, and fill you in on when you'll be hearing more about the specifics. Or something like that.

Sort of an, "ok, everything looks great, we'll be in touch."

Edit: As for the FB status bit, from years past, most people I know have posted something relating to where they've matched.

Yep, sounded like it was mostly double/triple checking of ROLs from applicants and programs, individually handling those sites' lists which required greater levels of involvement on APPIC's part (e.g., paper rather than electronic submissions), and potentially checking/verifying the results themselves.

It's disturbing thinking that one's fate is somewhere on a row or table within a database

You're setting an alarm? When you have the day off?! I figure I'll be lucky if I can sleep at all - and if I can, I'll sleep until AT LEAST the official notification time (since this yr includes more info then ever before, we can't be sure the emails will actually come early as they have in the past).

Do folks generally post on FB that they matched?

I'll prob post something like "Looks like I'm moving to New York!" or "Looks like I'll be working for another year..." Hopefully it will be something similar to the former. 🙄

I usually get up and go to the gym at 6am during the week.

This way I can get up and check my email and KNOW if i match before I even start my day. YAY!! Will be great way to start the day. Should give me fuel for an extra few miles on the treadmill. 😀

I would just like to say that I am so grateful people continue to post on here. Even though I think I am coping relatively well, every time I stop cleaning to check my email (yes, cleaning is my coping!), I check this thread too. It's so comforting to have SOMETHING to read related to match day, even if it isn't yet the results 🙂.

As for fb posting, I don't know what I'm going to do. I had long planned to post something like... "I guess I'm moving to..." or "THANK GOD" but the last couple days, for some reason, I'm wondering if I should post at all, regardless of the outcome. I definitely want to share the news either way... I've been a really open book about this whole process, especially with my peers who have yet to go through it, because I think it is helpful to see what you're up against. But still... I just don't know if I feel like posting! I feel like if I *do* match, it might feel like gloating, and if I *don't* match, I don't want people's sympathy. I think it will depend on my mood match morning, but knowing me and my fb addiction, I'll probably end up posting something... 🙄

This sounds considerably less distressing than the scenario I'm creating in my head. I think I need to shake the feeling that we are still in interview mode at this point in the process! Thanks for the decatastrophizing thoughts 🙂

I'm likely to go with the following for FB

No Match: Oh Crap
Match: Matched

Both are short and straight to the point. It really is a great way to keep people posted who are waiting to hear anyway. And as T4C pointed out, it helps in coordinating the happy hour!

In the spirit of continuing to add something to this thread to give us something to read in the meantime since I can't seem to get anything else done, I'd like to run some stats by you to see if I'm thinking clearly or not. It seems that about 30% of applicants last year did not match in round 1? (and there should be a bit more this year, probably?) If that's right, does anyone know how many of those applicants did not receive any interviews at all to begin with? (i.e., did 30% of applicants who ranked sites not match, or 30% of the entire registered pool?) And then, if I'm recalling it correctly, weren't there about 250 slots open in the clearing house with about 800 applicants left unmatched? Anyone know what percentage of those sites were college counseling centers? I ask because that's what I'm interested in.

Sorry to dampen the mood with such questions, and yes I know they've been answered in previous threads but I can't find them right now! I certainly hope to match but I'm trying to prepare myself with a realistic mindset if it doesn't work out.

Thanks, and I hope everyone is holding up okay! (and yes, I cleaned my apartment from top to bottom, as well, in order to avoid thinking about all this):xf:

I just find it funny everyone is cleaning to relieve anxiety; why doesnt cleaning work for me? 😳

I ask myself the same question. 🙁

I'm a big NBA fan and fortunately the league's trade deadline is this Thursday. Lots of fun rumors to follow intensely for no reason these next couple days. Although it's not productive, it's a nice distraction. 🙂

ahh, the "to facebook or not to facebook?" question.

I'm definitely planning to post my match results - mostly because it's a quick way to get all the info out without making a ton of calls. I have a lot of people wondering if I'm coming back "home" or not. That being said, my program has an extremely solid match rate, so hopefully my fb post won't upset anyone!!

I agree... I have been checking this site much more often now that we are waiting for our results. Not quite sure what I am looking for, most likely just some validation about the anxiety I am experiencing. Also, it makes me feel better to see there are people on here that are way more anxious than me 🙂

Good luck to everyone on Friday!
