Did anyone out there get a Rush interview?
 
1 out of 9 so far without any official rejections (crosses fingers for UPMC)
 
2 out of 6 rads so far. Didn't apply to Rush.

No rejections yet, which leads me to believe I'm in the "just in case somebody cancels an interview or we don't schedule enough with this round" pile.😕

:laugh: I bet I belong to the same category of applicants for a lot of the programs that I applied to..

Got the axe from Mayo this AM. Too bad, was actually really looking forward to that program. Oh well. I guess it is nice to learn about a rejection earlier rather than later so that one can focus on other programs, though, instead of being strung out until the end and never even hearing anything back.

Looks like everyone so far is getting a decent number of IVs. Congrats to all!

I got the rejection yesterday. I emailed them to express interest and that is what I got back, ha! I can't help but think if I had emailed them earlier I would have had a chance, but I'm not gonna spend too much time down that road.

I think all this does is help me to know that this process is VERY regional and also somewhat random. Surely they're interviewing candidates with lesser apps from Wisconsin, MN, midwest, etc.

Its water under the bridge now.
 
I got the Mayo rejection as well. What I hated the most about it is that when I first saw the "noreply@eras" email, I thought it was an interview invite to Mayo! I was so excited 🙁 My heart sank when I read the actual email.

I talked to my advisor about this, who told me that some of the top mid-west programs, especially Mayo, Michigan, and CCF, tend to be even more regionally biased than most programs on the coasts.

He then showed me the list of Michigan's radiology housestaff, which you can find on their website. I was pretty shocked. About 75% of UMich housestaff went to either UMich or Wayne State for medical school. There are only a handful of people from east coast schools, and you can bet they are from Michigan or are UMich undergrads. There was not a single resident from a west coast school, if I remember right.

I'm sure the same is true for Mayo.

Regional bias is pretty brutal. My advisor suggested that I only email a program if they are truly on my short list. Otherwise, you run the risk that programs will talk to each other--if you express strong interest in Mayo and the Minnesota region, it could be pretty hurtful to your apps in Cali or NY if they hear about it. I decided not to email Mayo or Michigan.

I guess I understand the logic to this and I am sure that it will factor into our favor at east and west coast programs eventually. I.e. I may get one or two west coast/mountain area interviews that I would not have ordinarily gotten had I been from the midwest or east coast. I think that it's a wash in the end.

But I also believe that the selection committees are not just randomly interviewing and rejecting applicants - they do this for a living and are probably pretty attuned to nuances in our personal statements and LORs that push them one way or another. So I feel that the places that have offered me an interview are places that want someone like me, and those that have passed me up are looking for a different type of person. Just going to go with the flow. And gladly interview at places that give me an offer.

I do have my one or two places that I really want to interview at that I will email later in the season if they have not extended me an invitation, though. But that's not a card that we should be playing everywhere or we run the risk of being labeled a tool.
 
Just got the Hopkins invite! Now I must say I am confused. I don't have any tie to the region and I thought I'd have no chance there after the rejection from Mayo. I guess I'll never know exactly what Mayo didn't see in my app that Hopkins did. What a weird process.
 
The "regional bias" may indeed be an effect, but I'm not sure it was a big one. I received interviews at Mayo and Michigan, but did not receive ones at lower tiered programs in my home region that I thought I would have a sure shot at.

That's fantastic! Really rooting for ya, looks like you are getting pretty good interviews overall. And I think that you'll look back on things come mid-November and wonder why you were ever concerned about interview invites.

My guess is regional bias. I really doubt that many applicants really will go live in a place like Rochester, Minnesota with no ties to the region whatsoever- unless maybe they have large families and are looking for low cost of living areas. It would be especially tough for any single person to move to a place like Rochester. Baltimore, however, is a different story- a lot of people want to live on the East Coast, and it is a big enough city that single people will be willing to live there.

Likewise! I got the Hopkins invite, but no Mayo (and no Michigan...and no Columbia, sad day). What a weird process...but I'm so happy I got at least a couple!
 
6 radiology (technically 5 but home institution has not sent out offers yet) and 6 prelim/TY interviews so far for me

hoping to go on around 12-15 rads and 8-10 prelim/ty interviews when all is said and done
 
Big day! I got 1 rad invite from emory, 2 TYs and a prelim med today. Puts me at

4 radiology

1 Prelim Med

All of my rads invites are outside of my region. In fact, the only invite I have in my region is the prelim. This leads me to believe that region may not be a huge player as it sometimes gets credit for being.

Didn't do aways. Was told by my advisor that I didn't need them with my stats. Also, there wasn't one institution that I really wanted to go to in particular, nor did I think I needed an extra place to snag a strong letter because, unlike ortho where you need mostly if not all ortho letters, most places expect only one rads letter and I felt my strongest shot was at my home institution with a guy with a decent name.
 
I'm having the opposite experience with regional bias. I have 6 interviews from my home state and only 1 interview from outside my home state (and that 1 is from a neighboring state). I'm an above average candidate by scores and grades. Maybe one of my rec letters is just trashing me, who knows?
 
If you have 7 interviews this early you must have a pretty excellent application.

Which state are you in?

I highly doubt that any of your letter writers are trashing you, otherwise you would not have 7 interviews - you would have zero.

It may be that a lot of programs are waiting for the MSPE to be released before they start offering interviews to applicants outside of their home region.

If you are very interested in a school/region outside of your home region, and those programs have started to offer interviews (per AuntMinnie), you should definitely email the PCs of selected programs, to express your interest in the program/region. From what I have heard, this can be very useful in getting interview invites to outside programs.

BTW, not a single one of my interviews has been in my region. Hopefully things will pick up a bit after the Dean's letter goes out.

Strong work everybody! Most of the places that I have applied to have offered IVs, so this is probably my final list (though really hoping to still hear from one or two more places)

I think that I have a broad range of programs, which I understand is key to matching.

Kind of surprised from places that I did not hear from: Indiana (went to UGrad there), Louisville (from Kentucky originally), all of the places I applied to in Florida. Oh, well. Looking forward to getting IV season underway.

Programs also have to play the game to fill all their spots so they also have a "broad range" of interviewees in terms of competitiveness just like applicants do with different programs. For example if you went to school in California and have board scores in the 250s with AOA, a community program in Ohio probably won't offer you an interview since it's very unlikely you'll rank them highly if you interview there. They would much rather offer an interview spot to the applicant who went to school at Ohio State with board scores in the 230s who is much more likely to have them highly ranked.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Now that the dust has settled and the majority of interview invites have been issued, how is everyone feeling about things? I am pleasantly surprised at how things have turned out. It is really hard not to go into this thing with nightmares of having only one or two IVs, applying to a huge number of programs, ready to jump on any and every invite that comes your way and becoming a compulsive e-mail checker. I definitely was that guy.

Two places I got IVs from, I kind of pondered over the top three dates I could interview, and then emailed back the next morning. Only to find that all the dates had already been taken. One place was COMPLETELY full, the other only had a single day open from their entire list of possible spots. I ended up having to be waitlisted at both places. Why do programs offer more IVs than actual interview spots? And what is the deal with needing to reply within minutes of receiving an email in order to secure an interview spot?

It has been fun meeting various applicants at the few interviews that I have gone to so far. Good bunch of people.

I'll be IVing there in January. My adviser knows the cali programs well and repeatedly stated how this program does not get due credit because of its name, but far exceeds the quality of most of the california programs. Apparently they have an excellent radiology program with particularly good IR, if that is your thing (it is mine). I think that someone on faculty created a stent or something like that. Lots of trauma, great pathology, and graduates very strong residents (supposedly). Also in a relatively cheaper part of the greater LA area and might be affordable for those with families on a resident's salary (compared to LA or bay area programs).

I don't think that you should have any problem matching with that lineup.

I wonder why everyone seems to be going on so many prelim/TY interviews? I am only going on six total, four of which are prelim med. I want to know where I am going to be the first year, at least.

I have my top 5 rads programs, and I don't really see them changing through January. How does everyone else feel about where they have been so far, any favorites?

I'm couples matching w/ peds, so being in the same location all 5 years is of top importance. Because of that, I basically applied to 2-3 prelims per city.

Regarding rads programs, I have a couple of clear favorites at the moment, but the rest are all in one big blob. My wife's thoughts on the corresponding peds programs are probably going to have a lot to do with how I rank those.

Interesting, any idea about its competitiveness? I'm going to be applying next year as an OOSer. (I'm from CA originally, though.)
 
My sense is that it is middle-tier in terms of competitiveness among Cali programs. Probably on par with UC Irvine and UC Davis. Don't really know much about the other Cali programs. I am OOS, with no connections, ties, etc. to the state. I am by no means a superstar. I received a few IV invite from Cali programs, ended up only going to UC Davis and LL. At each of the IVs I went to none of the applicants was actually attending school in Cali as far as I can remember, but all were from the state originally and wanting to return for residency. Everyone seemed to be going to school in Chicago or NY state. You will have lots of company in that regard. Good luck, let me know what I can do to help!

I have no idea, I was told not to apply there but it was recommended that I look into Loma Linda. FWIW.

You might want to check on Aunt Minnie. There are lots of threads comparing programs now that we are finalizing our rank lists. You might find something more substantial on Cali programs there. Good luck!

Nothing specific, just that it was not on par with other programs in the state. There are a lot of very good programs in California.

It may be a good fit for you, however. If you are interested, definitely apply there and see for yourself.
