Hey everyone,

I applied to dental schools for the first time!! yay!! I have a few questions, however, about the supplementary applications. Currently, out of all the schools I have applied to, I must fill out 3 supplementary applications (UNC, Penn and Western). Here are my questions:

1) Will the other schools I have applied to request supplementary applications later in the cycle?

2) I am currently waiting for personal checks in the mail. Therefore, is it OK if I mail my secondary application checks to the individual schools a little later (On AADSAS, it says mail checks at the same time)?

3) How in depth did you answer the supplementary questions for UNC, Penn and Western?

4) On UNC's supplementary, it asks, "Which schools did you apply to?" Does it look bad if I applied to many schools?

I greatly appreciate any help. Thank you.

Not that I'm an expert on this, but here's my two cents.

1) Under the AADSAS portal there's a pdf you can download that tells you exactly what each school's secondary policy is. Some have none (other than sending a check); others might contact you later for details.

2) "At the same time" means you don't have to wait for schools to contact you. It doesn't mean literally the same day you e-submit.

3) As in-depth as you can. This is another way to make yourself stand out.

4) You're not obligated to tell them every school you're applying to. I would just list a few ones that really interest you.

3) I wrote about 1/2 of a page for most of the questions..hope that's enough

1) 2ndaries are run by the school. Some schools will send you automatic 2ndary applications (even without an interview invite)... others only do it because you were called in for the interview. You'll just have to wait and see what each school wants.... best way to find out if your unsure is to contact the school

2) depends on the school

3) answer them using complete sentences, with clear/logical answers. This is a professional program you are trying to get into (keyword = "professional")

4) my experience has been that... honesty is always the best option. Of the 4 schools that accepted me this past cycle, 3 of them knew exactly how many schools I applied to (18) and how many interviews I had set up (8).... It is my conclusion that applying to many schools does NOT hurt your chances, matter of fact, it showcases how eager you are to get into dental school, especially since its so competitive nowadays.

1) Depends on the school. Some have supplementals you have to complete now, later, or no supplemental application at all. This should be listed on the supplemental table:

2012 ADEA AADSAS Dental School Supplemental Information

2) Yes, that's fine. You don't have to send it immediately.

3) You don't want to write another Personal Statement length type essay, but 1-3 paragraphs should be enough depending on the question.

4) It's not going to look bad listing all your schools. Some may think applying to many schools isn't a great idea, and others may think applying to few schools is not a good idea. Just write down the true amount and you shouldn't have any second thoughts worrying about it.

This. If any schools give you any grief at it, ask them how they do their admission process - if they have 30 seats, they surely don't just give out 30 offers to the students they liked the most - they give out more so they have a "back up" plan or "options" in case some students decide not to take the offer. It's the same thing with students - sure I would love to go to say Meharry, but I am not stupid enough to just apply to that school - that doesn't show dedication, that just shows stupidity.

Hey where did you get the supplemental material? I also applied to Western, and on AADSAS it says: "There is no supplemental status information for Western University of Health Sciences (WESTU) at this time."

Thanks for all the responses everyone.

predental012: try checking it again because mine says different. Also, go to their website because the supplemental is there.
