2012-2013 Panic Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Thanks... I feel better after reading this and after posting/venting a very long message... haha!

hey there, i hope it works out for you. i've said this before, i think my panic is always somewhere lurking in the back of my head, not enough to drive me crazy, but more subtle like a chronic ache. ive had 2 interviews, 6 rejections, and 15 silences. if i get an acceptance at my most recent interview i will most likely go there, love the school. already been two weeks since that interview.

i can't imagine the relief flooding thru my body when i hear the good news, cause i have moments where i dont think ill get it. but we just gotta keep hoping. worst case i apply again. good luck to you and the rest of our fellow panickers.

by the way i just saw Life of Pi, great movie, it gave me the urge to travel the world.

Hope things work out! If not, ignore the GPA and substantially improve your MCAT, it's generally more important.

If that urge is strong, you'll want to follow it before entering med school. Very few people are able to travel significantly in med school, and most that do spend their time watching cases in hospitals instead of out among people. Speaking from experience though, that urge only gets stronger the more you see. 🙂

I wouldn't expect a tremendous amount of movement until after new year's, though I imagine a number of acceptances may go out between the 20th and 25th.

Why? Do most admissions offices start closing tomorrow? I would think that next week would still be a normal work week for most, right?

Probably, though they'll be winding down for the holidays, and sending out reams of interview invites for what would probably be February for a lot of schools, and dealing with all the subsequent questions, may not be what they want to do the week before break. Schools planning for January, though, maybe.

It's also better to go into a week with lower rather than high strung expectations. 😛

Interviewing at my no. 1 tomorrow. :scared: 😀 :scared: #Panic

I dunno about IIs, BUT, 2 schools I've recently interviewed with told me to expect decisions this week (on Wednesday or Thursday) so some adcoms are still meeting. Whether or not there will be IIs, I don't know. But they are not all off this week!

It seems that many schools are interviewing past Feb right now :/

Some are, some aren't. My hopes for an II in January aren't high, but stranger things have happened. At this point, I'm looking at what I have, not what I don't have, and if I didn't have any II's or anything at this point, I would be assuming that I'm going to be applying again.

Tough, but that seems to be how things are breaking for some people. Jacking up a low MCAT and applying on day 1 will help many panicking right now. We'll all make it eventually 🙂

bearstronaut, you are a beacon in the darkness of the pre-allo panic. thank you for your optimistic comments, they help me see things in a better light.

I'm glad they help you in some way 🙂 I just really hope people can enjoy the holiday without wiling it away into this process. Time lost is gone forever - better to enjoy the time we have now than defer our lives to what we hope next fall will be.

Besides, it'll work out eventually 🙂

Nabilsmile, see you as a reapplicant next year? I feel like I am gona be reapplying again. I don't think anyone has worse of a cycle than I am having right now...1II and 10R. 34Q MCAT (13/9/12). Applied Late....don't know how much that hurt my chances...

Applying late (September and on) has HUGE ramification on II's.

Take solace in the fact that, with that mcat score (and assuming a good gpa and no red flags), you will have a vastly different season if you apply first day.

I'm guessing your GPA is low since you didn't list it. Applying late is a killer though.

Well, still no II.I guess January/Feb is my only hope. Gosh, I really don't want to go through this again....

I wonder what this week will bring 🙂xf:, though I am cynical enough to assume that it will be bringing disappointment).

I was just reading several of my posts from a few months ago in this thread. It kills me to think that I have made no real progress in 60 days....

Saw your thread and you have a high GPA as well. I think applying late (getting your MCAT in September) hurt your chances but also applying fairly top heavy. Even some of the "mid to lower tier" schools you got rejected from get a $hit ton of applicants (Georgetown, GW, etc.). There's still a lot of time left, so keep your head up. Also, are you an ORM? Things like leadership roles, LOR, and your personal statement also play a huge role at the many top tier schools you applied to. Being from California certainly doesn't help either. Just be patient--you certainly have the stats to get into medical school, but if you do have to reapply next cycle focus on the other things and also apply earlier and more broadly. Good luck 👍

yeah, i think that's how it is for most people after october. =/

Anyway, how are things going for everyone? I'm for whatever reason watching the patriots come back against SF :O

Eating a ton of chocolate (not PMS-ing, I swear) and reading beauty blogs to pass the time. Until tomorrow, netizens! Hopefully this week brings good tidings and cheer.

I wish I could say "I haven't heard from this school in 5 months!" for certain schools. My "match" schools have been rejecting me left and right, with alarming frequency and speed. The schools left on my list are: a couple "match" schools (rejection pending in all likelihood), "reach" schools (which I assume I WILL get rejected from, given my bad luck with my "match" schools) and "safety" schools (absolute silence, even after an application update).

I'm sorry dude/dudette. Thinking good thoughts for your week.:xf:

yeahhhhh 49ers!!!

my team baby, after last week's thrashing of the texans i thought we might lose to the pats, and they made a hell of a comeback, but thankfully we managed to pull off the huge win in New England.

these playoffs should be great, new powerhouses this year with the texans, broncos, 9ers. good luck to all this week, i hope we all get more IIs/acceptances.

Maybe this doesn't fall in the scope of the thread but I'm getting really nervous about my two finals tomorrow. :scared:

I applied in June and got 2 interviews quickly at very good schools and was wait listed at both. I have been rejected by far worse schools, and haven't heard anything from 5 others. My state school put me on pre interview hold... I never expected this much uncertainty. I don't really know what to think anymore.

We may disagree which team is better. Cheerleaders on the other hand...

Just got my 3rd rejection. My total is now, 1 II (resulted in acceptance), 3 rejections, and 10 silences. Really just want another II. I can't help but wonder how bad my application actually is if I've gotten rejected this early from schools like Hofstra and Oakland.

They may not look past your first MCAT with your GPA. But couched in that rough truth is another truth: assuming you've been truthful on your MDApps 🙂p) you've already been accepted. You're going to be a doctor. You may not get to walk the hallowed marble halls where angels fear to tread, and the world won't roll its eyes behind your back when you bring up where you went to school as part of your self introduction in 40 years, but you'll be a healer in a scant 4.5.

That's quite the feather in your hat. Go peacock a bit 🙂

I got rejected from vcu and rosalind franklin but ii at BU and Wake. Doesn't mean anything if new/3rd tiers reject you 👍

Thanks for the optimism, and I agree with all of that, but like I mentioned earlier in this thread, I have SIGNIFICANT reasons for wanting to attend a school in cities that I still have several schools that I am waiting to hear back from. So definitely still panicking...

Hope you're right. It's so odd. Do you think it has to do with these new/3rd tier schools wanting to accept people who are either in that region (higher chance of attending there) and/or people who probably won't be getting multiple acceptances elsewhere?

Yes. Third tier can be harder to get into than first tier for some applicants (decent scored Californians, for instance).

Idk, my stats are low but idk how much they value URM.

There's a bias rankings-wise for a school to get the best acceptance to matriculants ratio possible. This schools don't give acceptances out to everyone qualified, and overqualified applicants can be suspicious. Applying too low can be a problem for applicants, though it's rare someone under applies their stats.

Busted. Got rejected from Quinnipiac -- new school in my home state with preliminary accreditation -- after an interview I thought went well. Now second-guessing my most recent interview at a more selective school and way more nervous about going to my third (and final?) one.

Guess I shouldn't complain because I have 3 interviews. Post-interview rejection burns, though.

I feel like I am going through the application version of a mid-life crisis. I decided to look through last year's school specific threads and started feeling nauseated when I saw interview invites drying up in January at basically every school I care about. In reality it felt like they started drying up back in October, but at least I could always hold out hope of 'maybe next month!'. But this is really it - the final few interview invites will be coming out in January after adcoms come back from their holiday break, and then that's it. Goddamit. **** me for applying in September, I feel so friggin' cheated from this process.

Apply next year on day 1. You'll have a substantially better process.

I can't even imagine the embarrassment of having to ask my letter writers for new letters after they all lauded me for how great my application was.

Better than using their great letters to go to a school they think is inferior to your ability?

You don't need to get new letters.

Reusing the same ones is not a "no-no". (Unless you thought they were less than ideal.)

Hypothetically, if you used interfolio, your LOR writers wouldn't even need to know that you are reapplying.
