2012-2013 Panic Thread

Totally agree, and for me this year my best present was also my worst. A thoughtful person in my life got me the perfect stethoscope. I'm terrified about the fact that I have yet to get an acceptance, so what do I tell this person in the spring if I have no good news?

wow this made me cringe because I totally know that feel. My mum doesn't think I know, but she bought me a copy of Gray's Anatomy and has been keeping it hidden under her bed for like the past two years, just waiting for that first acceptance...

Yep, that's why I only told a handful of people that I was premed until this year when I started mentioning the application cycle. I still just tell most people I'm applying to grad school and leave it at that unless they ask what type of grad school.

You guys, my advisor said that this is a really slow year and that there's still quite a bit of time left to receive ii's.

I've had a few ii's and mostly silence from a lot of schools. Fingers crossed for a great January for everyone.

If I were in admissions, I'd admit people on their birthdays. Just because that'd be AWESOME.

Lol, yeah that would be cool if my birthday wasn't in the fall. 🙂

I think most have their last 'wave' of IIs in January. But my mindset is that if I have been passed over for the past three months, I shouldn't hold out hope for this one either.

Late applicant with another II yesterday.

3 MD II, submitted most secondaries mid October.

Guys, I need your help.

I'm freaking out right now. I applied to UPenn on deadline (Nov 19th), Johns Hopkins (Dec 1st), UCSF (Dec 7th), UCSD (Nov 29th) and Tufts (Dec 4th). I have not heard back from them. Am I doomed?

4.0 + 35

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

You appear to be applying to schools that are on the water. I would recommend the Caribbean - everyone's heard of it, and the location is absolutely beautiful!

I guess trolling is fun? If you're serious, you need to take a year off and learn to take the application process seriously.

I'm sorry that you think I'm trolling or not serious. I am not sure why you think so. Maybe I have not phrased my questions correctly. I should have asked if I am doomed for the schools that I listed. I am particularly interested in UCSF and UCSD because of family ties (my husband will be able to find a job there). I applied to UCSF and UCSD in late October but did not get secondary invitations until much later...

I took the MCAT late during the summer because I was not certain if I should apply this cycle due to family emergency, so I applied pretty late this cycle. However, I already got interview invitations at 5 schools (4 of them are in top 20) and got accepted into UTSW. And I would love to matriculate at UTSW but it means that my husband and I will have to live separately.

Being a physician is something I am very passionate about, so I am taking this application process seriously... Not so sure why I am explaining myself in such great details.

Happy Holidays!

So why exactly are you freaking out? You already have an acceptance from a great school and interviews at other fantastic schools. I think you are in a very inevitable position. Good luck...I'm sure you're going to be more than fine!

I guess I mostly freak out because I have not heard back from schools that my husband will be able to relocate.

Sorry if I overreacted. I'm very grateful for this application process. I have had lots of luck so far.

But thank you for your support. Good luck to you and everybody else 🙂

I thought you're trolling because the schools you applied to + your stats + when you applied are discussed at length on SDN as being a recipe for disaster. I still think you're trolling to some degree.

You would substantially improve your chances if you applied again next cycle, very early, if being close to your husband is important. You seem to have applied to a bunch of places that aren't near him, though, so maybe you two are okay with four years of long distance.

Regardless, I hope things work out!

Given the success of your cycle so far, it seems that you're a pretty stellar applicant so you probably have a shot (albeit a minor one - it depends on your background and ECs). I'm guessing you want to go to school in CA - if you applied to CA schools other than just UCSF and UCSD, then I don't think you're completely doomed.

I did apply to UC Irvine but was rejected one day after turning in my secondaries... And yes, we want to live in CA. I am a Texas resident though.

Yes, we are okay with four years of long distance if we have to. I just prefer to live close to my husband... (either CA or somewhere near Boston would be perfect for us 🙂

Not sure why you still think I'm trolling 🙁 To be honest, one of the top 5 schools invited me for an interview 5 days after I submitted my secondaries so I found courage to apply to JH, Tufts and UPenn even though it was really late. I know that my chances at these schools are really slim but I still wanted to give it a shot.

Do you guys think admissions offices will open tomorrow? Or is it more likely after the new year

Every night I wake up in a cold sweat from nightmares about this horrific process. I am so depressed. I can't eat or sleep, I obsess every waking moment about medical schools. I cry myself to sleep. I watch these forums like a hawk and all the school specific threads, even those that rejected me. I've lost 10 lbs this year just from this process. I have a really huge problem that I need your help with.

You see, I've been accepted to Yale, UCSF, and Wash U and I don't know which one to pick. I don't know what to do. I'm so miserable because my top choice was Harvard--and they rejected me. I'm considering reapplying for next year. My MCAT was a 37Q. Why am I so stupid? Why can't I get a 40? I tried so hard. Damn it, I just know that was the problem. I think I'll retake it and apply again, because those other schools just aren't good enough for me. FML.

Don't you have anything better to do on New Year's Eve?

>inb4 "Don't you??"

The festivities start in a few hours :meanie:

My advising office said that January tends to be a very busy month with ii?

really? I was under the impression that most schools finish interviewing in Jan/Feb and had made the majority of their invites by now. Would love to hear from a few more schools. . .

I see some rejections going out, and I personally received one from Vermont. Not too upset over it, but I would want at least 2 more interview invites out of the 15 I have yet to hear from.

sorry to hear that- was this pre- or post- interview?

Aw man, without finals and the holidays distracting me, I'm starting to feel the anxiety again. I'm supposed to get a post-interview decision sometime in the next 2 weeks too. :scared:

Yep, I should get a decision in the next week too. I'm trying not to think about the process but my family doc saw me today and asked how the applications were going. My only response was, slow.

Slow is the perfect adjective

Try not to let it fray your nerves too much, everyone 🙂 It'll work out, sooner or later.

Hang in there, guys. I received several interviews in the past few weeks and one this week, so there is a good chance that you guys will be getting interview invites this month and next!

Remember, you are still in the running until you get a rejection letter so keep your head up!

except for the silent rejection schools...:scared:

Interviewed at two schools in December, one in October. Got deferred until Feb. for the Oct. school, got the email today that I was waitlisted at one of the Dec. schools. Officially starting to panic. If I get waitlisted again, and no other interviews in sight thus far, I may start panic studying for an MCAT retake. On the upside, new Portlandia tonight. Why is there not a frowny face with a bottle of whiskey icon?

anyone with ZERO interview invites right now? please don't let me be alone. forever. alone.

I've only had 3 invites so far, but I applied fairly early. A friend of mine with much better stats applied about a month or so after me and she has had nada. And she is in a state with many state schools (not where I am). If I end up reapplying, I will definitely submit my app right when the gates open. Or I will just go to Brazil and work at Childrens Hospital.

Yeah, such a major mistake. I'm already planning on reapplying. first/second day....
