2012-2013 Panic Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I have a confession.. I panicked.. only have 1 II (next week at SLU).. so I last minute applied to UC Riverside.. then I looked at the secondary and regretted it... damn it!!

Haha... it's a beast of a secondary (although almost identical to UCLA if you applied there as well).

It's worth noting that UCR's entire mission is to train physicians who intend on working in the area--so being from Canada will probably make it extremely hard for you to make that argument (unless you have ties to the region). They're also only accepting 25 applicants who didn't attend UCR for undergrad.

Lol, embarrassing. I'm such a grammar nazi, too! These four finals really have fried my brain.

I think it makes it better WITH the spelling error, it probably should have more...it's more "in your face and we don't care" ...way good for lulz (post #777)

Crap, I made my entire argument around working with underserved Los Angeles, rather than the inland empire lol, think I'm going to be offed?

Waiting for 2 interview decisions, one more interview to go 😱

Should be hearing one decision soonish..

I think I'm done with interviews (haven't heard from 12 schools) and am waiting for 2 interview decisions. No acceptances yet. This wait is killing me softly.

Accepted today, so unless they mistakenly sent me an acceptance (is that even possible?) guess I'm outta here.

Is anyone else getting to the point where they're considering writing an update letter along the lines of:

"Dear Admissions Committee,

I know I can convince you that I am a worthy future medical student, if you would just offer me an interview to prove myself.

Please let me know.. Soon... "

LOL j/k

If only...

I used to do this when applying for jobs and it worked like a charm.

Nope, Northwestern. Thankfully I'm still in the game for Rush. (Game's almost over though...)

I am always curious about Rush's ii selection criteria. With that large an applicant pool, you'd think their matriculants' stats should be much higher. The same puzzle with RFU, GWU, BU & Drexel.

Officially panicking. Had one interview, got waitlisted. Either rejections or crickets from 30+ other schools. Filling out DO apps right now...

I'm finding it slightly surreal that it's been about 7 months since submitting the primary app. 7 months!!! I can't believe I've been feeling like this for THAT LONG. Can't wait for all of us to get our positive news and finally be able to relax a bit.

It's a bit late for DO apps....

I agree, but I don't have a lot of other options at the moment...

Other options? That isn't an option. It's the same as filling out the AMCAS in November. Save your money for reapps in 5 months.

That's the thing I'm most worried about at this point, how I can afford to do this whole process over :scared:

REALLY hoping for at least 1 more interview invite, but not getting my hopes up :/. Only had 1 interview in October and wasn't accepted in the past couple rounds of acceptances (a few more to go, otherwise it's off to the waitlist for me 🙁 :xf:). No love from state schools (yet?)...being from CA is rough.

Definitely not how I expected this application cycle to go, but hey what can you do... Reapplying will be tough, especially with no significant changes to my app. Hopefully it doesn't come to that but I'm trying to mentally prepare. Good luck to everyone waiting for some good news! I feel your pain! :luck:

I have already half given up on this cycle... because I still have no interviews

I have one interview but i'm kinda getting to the point where i wanna call all the remaining schools (12) and ask if there's a status update. must..fight.. this...feeling..

BUT ..... I still have [some] hope. I have always believed that as long as you are not rejected, there is still a chance. :xf: for IIs 😛

I'm hearing back from my top choice next week. Let the dreams of joy fade away into tears of despair.

No more panicking! I just got my fourth interview today (heard back from 14 schools). Moral of the story: Even with a lousy GPA and a lousy MCAT, one can still get an interview at a good medical school!! (IIs #2, 3, and 4 are all top tier).

Just thought I'd spread the good cheer. IT'S NOT OVER YET! It's not too late! Schools are still giving away IIs!!

You mean you got all 4 today or just the 4th one? Also, how many "silent schools" did you have before today?

but anyway, congrats, dude! It's good to hear that people are getting IIs in Jan because we panickers all understand the pain. 🙂 and I'll just keep panicking before I get mine.

Waitlisted at the first school I interviewed at. It hurts guys, it hurts.

Just received my first acceptance today! Just to put the corkscrews and loops of my emotional roller coaster into perspective: I received a rejection, deferral, and WL and can sympathize with you guys here. I think all medical schools' mission should include mental toughness and emotional resilience as critical personal attributes indispensable to how we handle the medical school application itself as well as to other future obstacles life throw at us.

Keep your chin up everyone.

Is a 3.5/31 a lousy GPA/MCAT?

Is a 3.5/31 a lousy GPA/MCAT?

As competitive as this cycle is, yes. I have a 3.7/34, and it's starting to look like I'm going the DO route.

No matter what premeds think, you can be a great doctor with a DO. Contrary to common sentiment that DO's have subpar stats, there are DO matriculants with 40+ MCAT every year. Sometimes it's just luck. :luck:

Minnesota, Twin Cities, out of state with moderate ties to Minnesota (my fiancé's entire family is Minnesotan).

I had one II at the beginning of November, one at the beginning of December, one at the end of December, and one today.

Oh it really is. Especially since I'm an ORM. My friends with GPAs of 3.7, 3.8+ don't have as many interviews as me (most have none). The ones under 3.7 don't have any at all. Everyone thinks I lied about my GPA to them to seem less intimidating (if that's not enough of an indication that it's bad), but in actual fact I think I'm just a good writer, had pretty good LORs, and lots of really original ECs. I also come from a school that is notoriously difficult. I heard back from 14 schools thus far and 12 are silent.

The craziest thing? I'm Canadian and 3/4 of my interviews were from state schools. 4/4 of the schools have an in-state preference. (I haven't heard back from most of my schools that don't have state preference).

I'm so tired of panicking. Literally, tired. I never get a good night's sleep anymore. I'm always distracted by the Inbox (1) when I'm at work only to find a one line reply from a friend to something I wrote days ago. Or worse, an ad from Ross. I told myself I was going to take some time this weekend and start preparing my SMP app, but doing so may make me burst out in tears. I just wish I could get back to normal; I am not an anxious or jittery person, and it is exhausting to constantly not feel like myself.

Lol. I have a 3.6/25 and I am "going the DO route" but I'm absolutely happy with doing so. 🙂

I did not mean that I wasn't happy to get into DO; as a reapplicant, I was very grateful to be accepted to any med school. Still, I would prefer the MD route because of the residency options.
