2012-2013 Panic Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Panic has officially set in. My primary was verified July 27th, I applied to 19 schools with a 33R and a 3.67 gpa from a top-20 school, but all that I've gotten so far is 2 rejections 🙁 I hear Aruba is nice this time of year...

hey laurlaur,

your stats are better than mine, i applied to about 30 schools with a 33 and a 3.4 from a top 20 school but i've gotten 3 rejections...hopefully october will be a better month

Don't fear, guys. My friend was in late July with ~ 3.8-3.9 and ~35 and he has 0 II and 0 rejections with around 25 appropriately distributed schools. Talk about a serious silent treatment. However, another student on the same timeline has ~ 3.9 and ~ 32 yet has 5 II and 1 rejection. Their ECs aren't dramatically different. This process doesn't make much sense sometimes, but if history remains faithful, it'll pick up for everyone. Not sure why it's dragging so badly for some yet on fire for others. Keep level headed 🙂

I''m grateful to have heard back from 5 schools on my list--three interview invites and 2 rejections. It brings a lot of closure just to have a response. I guess the reason I'm panicking is that I applied to a total of 23 schools...so what about the other 18? I haven't heard a peep from them, and it's the end of september...

I finished my apps within two weeks of getting them, and my primary was complete by the second week of june. For many of the schools, and it has been 3 months now with no correspondance whatsoever. I have strong stats, (greater than 3.9 gpa, and 32 mcat), but still nothing from so many of the schools...I hope I don't get put on hold or rejected at 18 schools

I applied about two weeks after you did but other than that our situations are almost identical. I know that it is hard to do but you gotta keep in mind that it is still fairly early in the cycle. Three interview invites is nothing to sneeze at either. That should be enough for you to become a doctor!

Multiple of 3, a doctor you will be!

hanging on to my one interview... beginning to think it's the only one i'm going to get... PANIC!!!

I'm interviewing at a school that takes about 60% of those the interview including wait list pulls so I hope I'm part of the majority!

Same here. Being part of the other 40% will be depressing especially considering I interviewed early.

Yeah hopefully interviewing early at the rolling schools increases the odds even more. It'd be a great thanksgiving/Xmas present to have a MD acceptance!

I'm so worried about this. I hear about people with 10 interviews and no acceptances. I don't want to be that person.

Seriously? Thats crazy.

Makes me feel scared that I only have 4 🙁

I think this thread was more for people panicking about a lack of interviews, not their acceptance rates post-interview. But I guess all types of panic are welcome here.

I'm really panicking. I'm panicking that I've been singing Justin Bieber songs. 😱

Lol, yea I feel like each moment I spend waiting/in anticipation is a moment of my precious, finite gap year wasted.

agree- I don't know why I thought my gap year would be a nice 'break' from all of this. maybe if I have an acceptance I will be able to actually enjoy not studying or applying and just relax which was my original plan- put in my 40 hours at work and CHILL the rest of the time. too anxious to chill now.

I applied to about 15 schools...no interviews and one rejection so far :scared:
3.79/32M

I'm in the exact same position... my gap year is more stressful than undergrad was. I'm guessing that this is a trend that will continue, unfortunately for us.

Applied to 20 schools. No interviews and 3 rejections so far. Kind of worried but I also know there is plenty of time ahead.

When did you submit? 19 schools, 2 rejections, no II so far. Submitted around mid August. I am starting to think about backup plan =[

You guys are fine. People who got interview invites in September were completed in June and July, so they are still reviewing applications.

I googled a song of Justin Bieber (As Long As You Love Me) and saw that he copied Backstreet Boys. I prefer the Backstreet Boys version and I've been listening to it to cheer myself up. It helped me get my engines rolling and on the right track. Maybe it'll help you guys out! Take a listen:

gap half-decade.

all this time at work on the computer just makes me check my status a lot and read SDN.

yup. I don't think that finding SDN was a good thing to happen to me. It's making me think that my gap year will turn into two now that I've heard nothing from 22 schools.

I submitted my secondary to Michigan a month ago, but only realized yesterday that my payment through paypal hadn't gone through, so it's just been SITTING THERE for a month! I paid immediately, but is there anything I can do?

Call the school and inquire. They might be able to help you out.

A smart idea (though no train pun 🙄). I did the same thing with one of my reach schools and just paid it as soon as I noticed it... haven't rejected me yet! But in retrospect it does seem like a good idea to call.

Absolutely agree, I am in my gap year as well and checking SDN makes the panic much more intense. It is all about hunting down other things to do...

Also on a gap year, I feel ya. Though i've had a few II's already, I have been verified since June 10th. Coming up on 3 months for some applications. And yet I check my app status at least twice a week.

The intermittent floods of people saying "II this morning!" on SDN are both great and terrible. On one hand, I am happy for people to be doing well and for the cycle to be moving. On the other hand, makes you wonder why you didn't get one, and if you've been passed up.

Oh well! Decided to no longer look at SDN at work. Slow night shifts in the ER already wind me up, being paranoid by checking my app status and SDN every other hour certainly doesn't help

This.

1 II and three rejections, two of which are from school I thought I had good shots at... Now I'm really worried about the 15 other schools I've applied to, most of which are higher tier.

Yuck this last week of September has not been kind to me.

2 rejections, 1 hold, and 0 ii; completed mid-August so I know there's time left (and I still have 14 schools to hear from), but I've only recently confronted/accepted the reality that I have below average ECs - hence my panic :scared:

Currently not working and only volunteering once a week has exacerbated the panic, which completely defeats the purpose of a restful gap year...

Funny thing is I thought I had above ECs and a decent MCAT but knew my gpa was on the low side. Didn't think I'd get the silent treatment from so many schools. I thought I'd get at least 1 ii by now. From the AAMC data, it said I had a 50% chance of getting into med school. That sounded decent enough. Flip of a coin, 50/50 chance I'd get into one school. If I applied to enough, I should get in somewhere...I even wrote some really good secondary essays (or at least I thought they were good ) for a lot of schools and thought my application was very in line with their mission statements.

O well, nothing to do but wait. It's all a big game, just gotta wait, and hopefully October will treat us better. As everyone said, it's still early in the game.

Remember you took a gap year for a reason. Keep your head up and keep looking for things you're truly interested in doing. Opportunities are out there, you just gotta keep looking. Good luck! :luck:

Haha, thanks and good luck to you, too! I'm kind of looking for things to do, but I'm not entirely sure what 'activities' match my interests and my mom doesn't actually want me to get a job right now - she's like "stay at home and chill with MEEEEE!!!!" and I feel totally disinclined to disagree 😀

My MCAT score and GPA are both good - so hopefully that will get me in somewhere. It's still early, so :xf:

Sigh... Got another rejection today, and now I am in panic mode... This whole application process sure is scary
