2012-2013 Panic Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Yes, sir! (Or ma'am!)

Yep! Sucks at times but getting to step back, relax (just a little), make some money, and mentally prepare for the intensity of med school will put us at an advantage in med school for the long run - I'm sure of it!

Hi, I submitted my secondaries mid August and haven't received anything from any of the schools I applied to (except SUNY Upstate - pre-interview hold). How did you get rejected? Snail mail or an email? And also,if you don't mind of course, which schools were you rejected by?

This thread makes me feel better about only having 1 MD II.

This thread makes me feel better about only having 1 MD II.

I know, me too, I have only gotten 1 MD II as well (my state-school). With every passing week of seeing people on my school-specific threads getting II's, I become more depressed about my situation. I know some people here would kill for 1 II, so I guess it could be worse for us. Good luck to everyone else waiting for an interview, hopefully you will all get some soon!

I applied to 18 schools (MD) and was complete with most of my secondaries by mid to late August. So far I have received 0 interviews, 1 hold, and 4 rejections. I know it's still early but it's not looking too promising right now.

According to AAMC data I have a 55-60% chance of being accepted somewhere...

I feel like getting at least one interview will relieve so much of the pressure I'm feeling right now

That's me, except add one more rejection to that number. Shew, I hope that October is better haha.

As a side note, I can't believe how much traffic this thread has gotten. I feel that checking this board just seems to worsen my anxiety.

Ok, this may seem dumb but when people say they have received a hold, did the school actually correspond with you and say that your application is on hold for further assessment or something?

Yes, sometimes they will send you an email, sometimes you will have to manually check the online portal for updates, sometimes it is only assumed... depends on the school.

When I send out secondaries, schools be looking like he's not fly,
I rock to the beat, writing essays while I silently freak,
This is how I roll, mediocre gpa and mcat soooo,
It's a premed with a big afro,
And like Bruce Lee, my story has that glow,

Ah...schools look at that primary,
I freak out!
Ah...schools look at that primary,
I freak out!

When I check my email, this is what I see,
Nothing in my inbox, the schools are ignoring me,
I got passion in my essays and I ain't afraid to show it, show it, show it,

I'm premed and I know it
I'm premed and I know it

Average stats and ECs. Complete in July/August. 20+ schools: 1 hold, 1 II, nada from the other schools.

Is it a bad idea to call the schools and ask about your status?

Finally got an II. After eleven rejections. Kill me now.

The bright side it's that you have an ii! All you need is one school 🙂

I'm glad I found this thread. I'm really anxious and insane right now, too. The thing is -- I've heard from soooo many people who didn't hear any good news until Jan, Feb, March.... so we just have to try to hang on.:xf:

I wouldn't recommend it at this stage (unless you didn't get a secondary from a school that doesn't pre-screen) - a lot of people have been met with the silent treatment for a while now.

11 rejections this early on? 😱 Stay alive so you can ace your interview (and hopefully there will be more to come!) :luck:

Yep yep yep!

Do I get a prize for most rejects by Nov? 🙂

I had 7 MD rejections before October... I might have you beat.

In case anyone asks: Mayo (post LOR request), University of Washington (OOR and pre-sec), Vanderbilt (pre-sec), UCSF (pre-sec), and Jefferson, Tulane, and BU post-sec.

Ugh, this whole process is like waiting for Christmas, except for in this case there's a chance that you won't get any presents 🙁 I just want to hear something either way!

Also, it costs a lot of money. Don't generally have to pay for your own holiday gifts, at least not in my family.

Haha I started to panic tonight.

I have a 29 MCAT 3.65 GPA applied to 20 MD schools 2 DO. (DO applied late not even complete yet).

So far 2 MD interviews, 1 MD/PHD interview. (prob approx 4-5 rejections don't remember) Also I only applied to 1 MD/PHD program.
Already completed 1 MD interview (don't think it went that well.. but we'll see)
1 more interview this week.

I should find out this month whether or not I got into that first school... but I've started to doubt myself, analyze my interview, and second guess my chances.

Guess only time will tell, but it's hard to think of what the heck I'm going to do for a while year while I wait to reapply!!

I feel for all of you guys without any interviews etc... can't imagine how I'd be feeling. I wish everyone the best of luck!

I think the main downsides of my application are:
MCAT score
Essay writing skills (I think I was a little lazy this time around and didn't proof read careful enough etc)

I have a question....

So, on the Boards you hear about large "waves" of rejections coming out -- Cornell yesterday, for example. If your application was complete around the same time as these (mid-August), and you didn't hear anything... do you assume that you weren't rejected in this round and perhaps there is hope for an interview invite at some point? Or do schools just send rejections whenever they want?

Just looking for hope anywhere I can find it.

Hope everyone is doing well.

positive thinking

First interview tomorrow at 11:00AM. Excited, thrilled, and scared out of my mind. :luck:

20 schools, 1 hold, 0 II, 0 rejections-- complete mid August.

Not sure if I should use my invisibility for good or for evil...

Gotcha, thanks!

I've had the good fortune of receiving 9 II's already (complete mid-august); just super nervous about the interviews, because sometimes my spanish accent makes it difficult to enunciate words, and then, I get flustered really easily. :scared:

But don't get discouraged yet...October just started...start getting nervous when late November and December hit....not now. 👍

Ugh, I'm also feeling invisible, except complete late July/early August at most schools. What is this.

3.74 34 MCAT complete at around 20 schools between 9/15- 9/30 (I applied to 36 ish so I'll be completing the rest this month)- 1 rejection, 1 hold (cause my LOR aren't on letthead :/) and thats it!

@nabile,

Dude don't panic. I wouldn't expect them to be able to process your application that fast. You probably won't hear anything for a couple of weeks.

With your stats you will definitely get in to at least 1 of the 20.

Haha I did apply pretty top ehavy, I applied to 35 schools because it was my dream to attend a top20, when I got my MCAT score I was devastated as I had been scoring higher, I figured a 34 is below average for top20, but not detrimentally so, so I'm applying to a lot of schools and most of them are top 20. Id say 10-15 = top 20 10=mid tier 8=lower tier-but these are the ones that 234892384289 people apply to! lol So I'm pretty scared!

I really appreciate the kind words though, I'm at that place where I don't know if I have red flags or not, or if I wrote a good PS, or if My ec's were adequate, LORS, so until I get some affirmation to my application, I'm gonna freak out haha!

For all the people waiting to hear back about your first interview, I'm hoping to inspire a bit of confidence!

Just received my first interview invite 10/1 and have been complete at almost all (30+) of the schools I applied to since late July to mid August. During that time, I received 8 rejections (albeit from pretty selective schools). Good luck to everybody waiting :luck:! I know how anxiety inducing the waiting process is, but try to stay positive!

Also nabilesmail, I have pretty similar stats and probably applied to a lot of the same schools as you, given your breakdown of the tiers of schools you applied to. I had the same feelings of uncertainty about possible red-flags, LORs, ECs, etc. but they all go away once you get your first interview! Here's to hoping you hear back soon with good news cuz that feeling totally sucks!

Congratulations! and thanks man, I really appreciate it. My applying late doesn't make me feel good either haha! yeah once I get 1 II I'll be in a much better mood! Until then, i can't get off studentdoc/ individually checking each schools status!

This website is a curse sometimes.

My roommates are yelling at me to get off this site too! They're saying it's just making me stress out more...but I'm already neurotic, what's a little stress on top of that?

Glad I'm not the only one panicking!

The school where I'm currently taking classes is also a place I applied for med school. I just got an email and all I could see was "Check your X school status" in the subject line. My heart dropped to my stomach before I realized they were just telling me to make sure I had paid my tuition for the term... hehhhh.

Come on, med schools!

I've got a 32/3.76 cGPA.. I know I'm not SDN average, but I'm dying to hear back from somewhere, anywhere!

We have pretty similar stats! According to AMCAS we have an 80% chance of getting into a medical school 🙂 Stay positive!

I applied to 13 MD schools and have been rejected from BU and got an II from VCU. I have not heard anything from EVMS, Morehouse, Meharry, Temple, WVU, where I have a good shot at. I'm starting to get anxious about it.

On another note, I've also only received 2 DO II (LECOM and WVSOM). Still waiting on VCOM (since I interviewed for early acceptance but was denied but my application has improved).

Woke up to an empty inbox this morning... 🙁
