2012-2013 Panic Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I knew this cycle was stressing me out - I found my first gray hair this morning. A new panic has set in- I'm going to look 40 years old by next year. :scared:

when should we start thinking about reapplying? I've been complete since June at 24 schools and got 2 interviews, 4 pre-interview holds, and 4 rejections...

I now realize that I made a lot of mistakes (medicore PS, weak/lukewarm LORs (shouldn't have used them), average ECs)...feeling pretty sh&*#y at the moment, especially since everybody around me has already been accepted...when is it time to throw in the towel?

easily the worst year of my life and a HUGE wake-up call...

Have you been rejected from those interviews? If not, you are still in a good position.

I really wouldn't start considering the thought of reapplying until May.

Spent the day at Soldier Field today, so I kind of forgot about med school applications for a while. Just got home and now it's all coming back to me....

If only I could live at a football stadium and watch football 24/7. I would probably be very relaxed all the time...

Start reapplying in marchish. There's still a fair bit of time left. If you already got interviews you have a shot at getting in this time.

Unless you need to retake the MCAT, this isn't something to be talking about until next May, really.

Also, go Seahawks 😀

I'd actually be starting to study right about now so I could take a March/April MCAT and have my scores ready to submit with AMCAS in June.

You may need to reevaluate your study methods if you need 4 months of solid study... but if you were in in June and have 0 IIs that may not be a terrible idea

Starting to think:

"complete and under review" = "complete and we are ignoring you"
"decision pending" = "deciding on whether to tell you what we really think"
"we will contact you by email when there is a change in your status" = "... if we feel like it..."

Edit: CWRU University Track rejection this morning.. off to a good start :/ (btw, letter was dated 2 weeks before they actually posted it online.. GRR)

Question: my friend hasn't received any interviews yet, is that a sign that it's too late? She has pretty average stats.

lol, define average. SDN average? or matriculant average? or average average

I figure I'll jump in

5 interviews, 1 rejection, 3 silent treatment

i think I'm allowed to panic all the way up til an acceptance is in my email lol

you definitely are. i've had 2 interviews still waiting to hear back, not quite panicking but i would describe my feeling as overall worried, not ridiculously so, more like a chronic dull ache that i can deal with.

I have a few interviews, but sometimes I think to myself, what if I get wait-listed at all of them? I know the chance of this happening is relatively small, but I have heard stories of this happening. and sure enough, I received my first wait-list not too long ago. Albeit it was at a med school that has an IS preference and I was an OOS interviewee. Panic is setting in like crazy :scared::scared::scared:

Just stopping by to panic a bit...

3.8+, 34+, complete at most schools since late July-August.

1 II (already attended), a few pre-interview holds, a few rejections, and silence from ~20 schools. Not at all how I had anticipated this app season to go, but oh well...mentally preparing to do it again next year but trying to stay optimistic!:luck::scared::xf:

Hoping to hear some good news in the next couple months, but hope is fading fast!

If I don't get any good news by the end of December, I'll really be in panic mode. Until then, I choose to only panic whenever I read this thread.

Wow, no II yet? I would expect December to go well for you.

I'm hoping for one II in the next two weeks, haha. :xf: I always frantically update statuses on tuesdays and wednesdays.

Man, nabilesmail, we are stats twins. Looking at your mdapp, even ours ECs are similar (what we did, how many hours) LOL. So I sincerely hope you get an II soon, because that would mean that I might have a chance as well 👍

Posting here instead of the school specific thread. Fell in love with a school during an interview, now waiting and hoping. Another email-less Monday means another disappointing week. All in all, I'm running out of enthusiasm for this process.

Has anybody else noticed your neuroticism dwindling? I used to check all of my status pages multiple times a day in september and october and check my email like once every ten minutes, but now it's just like ehhhhh it can wait...(which is ironic because as time passes I'm actually more likely to hear back...right? RIGHT????)

yes.... I have become more and more desensitized to this whole process

I can only have my hopes crushed for so many times (empty inboxes/same statuses) before I completely lose it.

Anyone who has more than 1 interview and is "panicking" is off his or her rocker. It only takes one.

Until that interview turns into an acceptance, they have every right to panic 😎.

Thank you.
Currently panicking because I didn't do my best for my last interview, which in turn makes me panic more for my next one.
The cycle never ends.

I had an interview way back in September, apparently I failed because I was flat out rejected. Well, I got another interview and I am waiting to hear back. My panic level is way higher than it was back before I had any interview invites.

In the words of bearstronaut, Another Monday, another empty inbox! :beat: 😛

(at lest I have an interview in two days! I'M SO SCARED TO SCREW UP because it's my first interview ever and it's one of my dream schools! So yes, a reason to panic, albeit a happy panic, if that even makes sense)

I concur. Because that's me right now. =X
Nothing in the world is right until there's an acceptance letter somewhere.

Where are you headed? I'm on the road in a few days. Hope it goes well!

Your quoting makes me feel famous 🙂 maybe an interviewer will ask for my autograph?

Thought I would jump in.

Attended 3 interviews so far. CAPed at 1, and silence from the other two.

And still haven't heard back from 14 schools.

Argh. The waiting just blows.

Just got my first rejection
I'm sure more'll be flooding in any day now

With a username like "Permavirgin," I was expecting something more like:

Just got my first erection

I'm sure more blood'll be flooding in any day now

😀

I received a really horrible rejection today from my in province alma mater 🙁.. It was incredibly discouraging. They gave us our scaled scores for academic and non-academic qualities..and needless to say.. i great missed the cut-offs on both counts.

worst rejection of my life...

To lighten the mood, anyone watched the movie Patch Adams? It was so horrible that is it funny lol. I just want to share this review of the movie, it's the funniest I've ever seen and points out all the plot holes and non-nonsensical of the move. Definitely worth watching!

Better data than no data. This gives you a means to improve, and a quantitative assessment of where you are now. Sorry about the rejection, though 🙁

thanks bearstronaut.. i feel better about it today.. i still have many schools to hear from and i hope that someone will be able to appreciate my background more...

to give you an idea of the harshness:

87% interviewee average -- scaled to 40/50
82% (my GPA) - scaled to 24/50..

This is an opportune time for me to ask this question: How difficult is it for a Canadian resident to get into medical school in Canada vs a US resident trying to get into medical school in the US. Are they similar? Is it significantly more difficult for a Canadian to get into a US medical school as opposed to a Canadian medical school? Why apply to schools in the US?

It seems like it is a hell of a lot easier to get in here in the states...

3.89 GPA, masters degree, 31Q MCAT, good EC's, lots of shadowing/volunteer

10 apps, 3 rejections without interview, 1 rejection from my state school despite a decent interview, 6 MIA's.

Entering full fledged panic mode now.

Check that, ready to admit defeat.

It's kind of an odd and complex game.

In Canada, there is a better applicants:spots ratio.. However, less schools overall. Also, less schools applied to per applicant, because nearly all schools have a huge in province (state) bias.

However, I saw/read/something a statistic once that said something like: In Canada, ~33% acceptance rate on a first try, and in the US ~66% (I'm making up these numbers but they are somewhere near that).

So.. I guess if an US school is Canadian-friendly, and the applicant is well within their GPA and MCAT range.. they probably have a bit of a better chance than at a Canadian school.

I know that the school that rejected me does not have a focus on research for their MD students and by-and-large their primary mandate is to get GPs out there...but this also meant that my PhD-in-progress actually counts against me (less time for volunteering, no 'extra points' for graduate work, etc.).
