Last year, there was an upper-third candidate who was accepted really late (after a few known middle-thirds). I agree that they may not be too strict on this tiered system.

Did your "middle-third" ranked friend send any updates to their office? Thanks!

I'm a bit skeptical of this. I thought they said once you interview your application was given a score which was final and once spots became available they move down in order of the score you received.

That's what I thought too. The score you get after your interview will not change (even with update letters/LOIs). However, if you look at the waitlist movements from previous years, there are a few discrepancies (some cases of middle thirds being accepted before top third, and in one case, a bottom third being accepted before a top-third).

Bottom third interviewed 3/20.... really hope they take people off the bottom but i doubt it 🙁 3.65 32R

I mean...I was really hoping this is how it would be. They seemed really straight forward about their admissions processes. Hearing that people from bottom third were accepted before upper is kind of upsetting.

As someone in the middle third, my view on this will be subjective. That said, I think that overall it is disappointing, simply because it lends less clarity to their process. While it gives hope to one third of the wait list, it also introduces a strong sense of doubt to the other two thirds. Additionally, it contradicts what they themselves have said about their process. That is, that it is straightforward and goes exactly as they say it goes.

Adding to all of that, it also affects people who were ranked in the lower third, took Buffalo at their word about the process, and withdrew.

I don't think it affects those withdrawing from lower third that much. Had they really had a strong interest in UB, they would've remained in the waitlist regardless (it doesn't hurt to stay, does it?). I believe there were many other strong factors that contributed to their decision.
 
Does anyone have any idea about a timeline for financial aid awards/scholarships here?
 
Hi guys - I called Mr Rosso today about 2nd look weekend and he said it was cancelled due to budget cuts...
 
Just interviewed here yesterday! Loved the school, loved Mr. Russo - what an awesome character - and loved the 24 hour turn around.
 
Will writing a LOI post-interview make any difference? From what I've read in the past few years' threads is no, since our final evaluation is set in stone in the ranked waitlist. However, I learned from my interview visit that LOI/updates were accepted, but they do not play any role on their final decision. Thoughts?

UB is my top choice... I want to stay close to home (and nothing can beat state tuition)! 😍

(I'm waitlisted bottom third)

When I asked about sending updates, they told me that it would make no impact on the decision. Buffalo was also my first choice, though, so I managed to work that into my post-interview "thank you" letter. I was accepted today off the upper third wait list. No idea if it made any difference, though. I say if you really want UB, it can't hurt. Good luck!!! Hope to see you in the fall 🙂

Very weird. Moved from bottom third to upper third. I called they said they had a glitch with their system in ranking people and apparently i was always supposed to be upper third not bottom third. Really excited since in the conversation he went out of his way to mention that 100% of the people in the upper third get accepted. If I were you I would check my status and see if it has changed. Good Luck everyone!

Thank you for the info! I noticed that they had glitches in the ranking system last year as well (with people moving up/down thirds).

Upper third. Confirmed the glitch..so check your status people for any changes as the current ones are the real deal.
 
I know this has been asked before, but do we have an accepted students facebook yet? Is there interest in someone making an unofficial one?

Where do people who attend here usually live? From what i recall I dont think they had student housing so is their a particular area where most students live, or is it pretty dispersed?

Has anyone who applied for a scholarship (not the RWJ one) heard back yet?
 
Any current UB med students here? I'm writing an essay for need-based scholarship now. Just wondering what type of essay they want. Should I only elaborate my financial difficulties without mentioning anything on my resume? The instruction says "short essay", but is one page double spaced too short?

I would also like to know this.

Follow up questions for current students: Can you list any common apartment complexes UB med students usually live in? Id like to live in a single but it'd be nice to have other students around.

Not a current student, but I know the area well. Look in Kenmore, Kenilworth, Amherst, and Snyder. Avoid University Heights if possible. Look at a map, and find main street. Follow main street past campus on Kenmore Ave. Anything north of this is very safe. The area just south of campus, avoid at all costs.

Did my undergrad here and that's pretty spot on. Unless you like late night noise, avoid University Heights (that would be Merrimac, University, Englewood, Winspear areas). And yes, Most roads north of Main St and the University are pretty good for living and have reasonable rents.

If you're looking to live closer to the downtown hospitals or the downtown scene in general, Delaware and Elmwood are nice locations, but it gets a bit pricier.

Most importantly, you want NOTHING to do with Bailey Ave when you get south of the campus. This along with the fruit belt (Peach St, Lemon St, Grape St...you know, fruits) are the most crime-filled in the city.

What about the area directly both and east of Delaware park?

Specifically amherst street and Huntington ave all west of Main Street.
 
A couple friends of mine live on Amherst St. and like it. For me, the biggest drawback of living further into the city (I'm in the Snyder Area) was a lack of off street parking. There is a Metro-Rail stop on Amherst St closer to Main. if you wanted to try and go car-less, the Metro-Rail ends right at UB South

HeyNumber2, was the one you received with acceptance in the packet you got by mail? I never received an acceptance by mail, but did get an email with my acceptance offer and the RWJ application.
 
the scholarship that comes with the acceptance is need based depending on whatever you put for average household income and outstanding debt.

My letter did not mention anything about receiving a scholarship, but i was given an essay prompt to write about to get a scholarship from the Scholarship Fund (which is not the RWJ). I do not know if this was because I was accepted in January, but I am still waiting to hear back on the SF scholarship...

On my FAFSA, I didn't fill out any other application. I didn't submit FAFSA until after I was accepted. I've heard of other people filling out scholarship applications, but I never received one (just RWJ) to my knowledge.
 
The acceptance package says classes begin Aug 12. Is this orientation? Has anyone called to ask? Thanks!
