Interviewed 1/30 and still waiting. It's been 11 weeks ohhhhh myyyy goddddddd😡

Interviewed 2/26, Put on Hold for Spring Consideration 4/16 (Exactly 7 weeks later). Translation = Keep waiting.

Called admissions today and was told I should've received my decision in the mail already. They will send me another letter (hopefully it won't take 2.5 months this time). THIS IS SO FRUSTRATING.

I think they only send acceptances via mail (wait lists & rejections are via e-mail) so that probably means good news for you!

That's what I thought too, till the fateful day I read this post:

rejected via SNAIL MAIL today. what?? lol I thought only acceptances came in the mail. cool downstate, seeing that letter made me way too excited.

:troll:

I wouldn't read too much into that.

I emailed my premed advisor and he let me know through his applicant data sheet(?) that I was rejected from Downstate on March 18th. Looks like I'll be getting the letter in the mail shortly.

Interviewed 2/5, 3.63, 38N

I'm sorry to hear that! :-(

Can any current student comment on living on campus (the dorms) vs. off campus? Are there two separate 'communities' within Downstate due to this?

Add me to the ranks of those that received the post-interview rejection via snail mail, about 7 weeks post-interview. Well, I was thinking I needed to make a move out of Brooklyn, so it looks like I'll get my wish! Best of luck to all that are waiting.

Received a post-interview rejection letter via snail mail today too...after 12 weeks and 2 days lol so cute -_- but I guess this makes decisions easier.

Wow, I guess they are really changing things up now. I'm sorry to hear that guys. Good luck to you both! :luck:

Ouch, I feel like rejection via snail mail is the cruelest way of finding out haha. I interviewed 3/12 so at this point I guess I should be expecting one as well 🙁

I plan to apply for 2014, but was recently told by a faculty member at another school that Downstate is in financial straits and likely to close. Has anyone else heard anything like this??? The advice was to not apply there because the faculty would probably all be really unhappy, etc. But this board sounds like most people who've visited really got a positive impression from the school. Does anybody know anything about this??

Search the thread for the exact comment, but the financial issues are mainly associated with the hospital system, not the med school. We even received correspondence from the dean assuring is that medical education and clinical training would not be affected by the situation at LICH and the hospital systems financial situation.

Sent from my Nexus 4 using SDN Mobile

Interviewed on March 6th, placed on Spring Hold today via email. Thought the interview went exceptionally well, but not surprised by the decision after reading about all the holds and rejections the past month and a half on this board. Knew that being put on spring hold was kind of the best case scenerio, given what I've been hearing..

Good luck to everyone else still pending, especially those who interviewed the same date I did. You all seemed pretty awesome, and I would love to have you guys as my classmates. Congrats to all who've been accepted.

I withdrew my acceptance today. I hope it helps one of you out!

http://www.brooklyneagle.com/articles/lich-wins-suny-withdraws-closure-plan-2013-04-29-124500

SUNY has decided to withdraw it's decision to close LICH because of the massive public outrage, which included a court order forbidding its closure until a public hearing scheduled for May. Downstate is apparently now pursuing possibilities of a new hospital operator.

This is a great victory for the constituents of Brooklyn and I'm glad LICH is here to stay, for now. It's a good hospital and it's unfair that the community and staff should suffer because of the financial blunders of those before Downstate took it over.

It may spell some financial difficulty for Downstate in the meantime though, but the good news is - with all this attention, the state may throw some money in to save it from sinking - and you guys will retain the rotation/clinical opportunities at LICH.

Just something to keep an eye out for!

Thanks for the post! Can any current DS students comment on if Downstate has addressed this new development with them? The email they sent to us prospective matriculants back in late March stated that the LICH issues (with the scheduled closure) would not impact the medical school itself.

Yet, now, with this closure halted, Downstate President Williams has said the associated monetary issues "still threaten the viability of Downstate Medical and our world-renowned medical school." The mixed messages are a little unsettling (to me at least). But it would make sense that a hospital that is hemorrhaging millions of dollars a week would inevitably have deleterious effects on its associated medical school.

Any thoughts/input?

Any thoughts on having a bike while at Downstate? How much more beneficial is it to own one, or is it just unnecessary?

I was thinking about purchasing a roadbike if I do decide to go here. Thanks.

Interview 3/12 put on hold today (5/3)... So from the hold list you can either be accepted, rejected or put on the alternate list?

Anyone accepted with a science gpa under 3.4?

called today after waiting 8 weeks post interview and they say another 1 to 1.5 weeks...

The way the Downstate FB group works is that the school makes an official FB group, and the students make an unofficial one.

Every year, students mainly use the unofficial one so that we can discuss things on an unofficial basis with no affiliation to the school. Last year, one of the MS1s on the 2015 Med Council made the Class of 2016 unofficial Facebook group for us and we have been using it prolifically ever since. Please also join the official group to get information straight from the school/administration!

Here is the Class of 2017 student-run Facebook group!
https://www.facebook.com/groups/331653843620262/

Just wanted to second that the unofficial Facebook group is a great way to get information. There are a lot of current students on there who are happy to answer questions about housing, commuting options, and so forth.

Got a rejection letter today. Interviewed 3/7. Sucks, I really loved this school.

Nycom is my back up, and seems like thats where I'm headed.

Anyone know when orientation starts exactly? The acceptance letter says Aug 15, 2013. However the packet containing the shadow-a-student program says August 5th...

I'm an MS2 and spent the first 2 years living on campus. As to whether or not you should live on campus the main pro is that it is convenient - you can get up at 8:30 and make it to every class (they never start before 9, some days they start 10). Many classes aren't mandatory but there are required sessions. The cons are that the dorms are kind of expensive, especially if you don't want a roommate. The buildings are kind of old and have their own issues because of that. Also, you want to be able to get out of the school every now and then if you want your sanity. If you have friends/relatives that are not far away that you can go to for the occasional weekend you'll be fine.
Many students live on campus the first year and then move out after that. There isn't that much that goes on in the dorms, although it varies from year to year.
Feel free to PM me for more info.

Definitely the second date. They moved the start of the year up by a week for all students. This probably was not updated at the time of printing the acceptance letters. You should get more information about the orientation over the summer.

Cool, thanks! I was wondering this too. Makes a big difference in terms of planning the summer.

Just withdrew my spot. Was a tough decision lots of great things I loved about Downstate. Good luck to you all!

Acceptance offered by phone today 🙂

Congrats, was this off the Hold for Spring Consideration category? If so, when did you interview/were put on this category? Also if you don't mind me asking, what are your stats? Thanks!

Thanks. I should've post those in my previous post lol. It was off Hold for Spring Consideration category. I interviewed 2/19 (I think) and was placed on hold on 4/16. My MCAT is 29, sGPA is 3.7s and cGPA is 3.9s.

Acceptance offered by phone today 🙂

If this is too personal I understand if you don't respond... but what was the breakdown of your MCAT?

Downstate is my number 1, I've wanted to go there my entire life... still on hold 🙁

i feel your pain.. i've been checking my mail neurotically in case they send letters early.

knowing the breakdown of someones scores is not going to give you any insight into if you will be accepted or not. just try to relax and hope they call your number

Can anyone else log in to see their checklist? It's not working for me

got a call this morning after being on hold. Gonna have to choose between here and SB.
