For those who were already accepted. When did you get the call from Dr. Heinrich? I've heard that he calls on Sunday. I've been sitting by my phone all day. What time did you get the call?

Just got put on the alternate list. Very frustrating. Is there any way to tell if you are on the priority alternate list or not?

does anyone have any info about parents day???
time ?

My one friend got her rejection last week and she sent her secondary after mine and I still havent heard anything.... is this a good sign?

I'm pretty sure they've finished their interview season already and filled their class. Actually I think the vast majority of the class was filled by the winter luncheon.

I called. They emphasized that they have not "closed out the season." She said she a final decision hasn't been made on my application, but I definitely have not been rejected yet.

 Send an update, or reach out to Heinrich or Rivero. That's what I'm going to do...

As far as I know we aren't scheduling any more interviews. So in that sense we are done - if we haven't interviewed by this point, we prob won't.

We always fill up before Xmas - I think they said about 2/3 of the current first year class were interviewed and accepted before Xmas.

They only caveat to this if one is a GSBS student - I know they get later interviews and stuff.

The e-mail they sent me said I was on the "Priority" alternate list in both the subject heading and body of the e-mail

Congrats! Any other acceptances ? And what are your stats?

I had applied with a 4.0 from Rutgers, 34 S MCATs.
NJMS was kind of my top choice so I just went with it.

I had gotten into Drexel and Jefferson too, but now I'm debating between Jeff and NJMS.

Yes, he does call on weekends and he called me at 9:45pm on a Sunday I believe.

Congratulations!
Were you accepted through phone call, mail, or email?

All acceptances are made by Dr. Heinrich calling each student personally.. then you get a letter/packet in the mail. I also got an email from my interviewer congratulating me.

Just chiming in about housing (though I want to know if rejection comes snail mail too!):

http://univcentre.com/

I found this place to be walking distance from the school, cheaper, and better when I was getting my Master's. If you're more minimalist, the housing size will do. If you need large, expansive space, 180 is better.

This is a horrible idea. I am assuming this person does not have experience living or going to school in newark. If you live in University Centre and walk to NJMS every day you will inevitably be shot, mugged, or raped by the end of your first year.

I lived there for 2 years going to NJMS; none of the aforementioned "experiences" occurred. Don't promote the Newark stereotype if you really don't know any better.

no offense but he's sort of telling the truth. I spent two years at school at Rutgers - Newark and I wouldn't live there if I didn't absolutely have to - which thankfully I didn't. It was a constant barrage of text messages/email blasts about muggings surrounding our campus. Hell, the store manager of the IHOP right across from street form NJMS was killed in a shootout 2 weeks ago.

Listen, NJMS is a great school and you'll get great urban experience with Newark, but would recommend living in their designated housing if you choose to live in that city or here's an even better idea - one of the surrounding towns which are beautiful and much safer (Montclair, Hoboken)...

+1 - I live off campus, about the same distance from NJMS that UC is... and i've walked most days and have yet to be shot, raped, or mugged.

I've also done it in varying degrees of sobriety - and still not had any of those other mishaps. Don't feed the notion.

Sort of telling the truth? its complete bs. When was the last time an NJMS student was shot/mugged/raped?
Not that I can remember.

The store manager of the IHOP was killed at 4am.... by people with no association to the school or hospital, and no school/hospital employees were involved in the slightest. So, yes, if you want to tie any crime in Newark back to NJMS - then go for it. Actually, there might be a car accident on 280 right now, which is only like 3 blocks from the school and Rutgers Newark - that totally means you shouldnt live in newark right? Yeah I totally agree..

Newark, like any city, has its problems - if you are playing with your ipad at a street bus stop at 11pm then you are going to get it stolen (as happened last year to a PT student I think). Use some common sense. No NJMS student I know has a had a problem with rapes/muggings/shootings in the 2 years I've been here... and there hasn't been anything said by the upper classman so I think you can make that 6-years. If you are worried, call Dean of Student Affairs and ask.

haha - a little sensitive there. bring it down a notch.

I am simply going off my experiences as well as those that I know which includes current & former NJMS students, friends who are/were Newark PD and Newark EMS, and being a student in Newark myself for two years. You are taking an unnecessary risk traveling through the city by foot if you don't need to - there is no debating that. Sorry you disagree.

"Newark - like other cities - has it's problems" - again, slight understatement. Let me reiterate - great school, wonderful scholastic and clinical experiences, just do yourself a favor and live in a surrounding town.

... and the fact that you think walking Newark in varying degrees of sobriety (clearly at night) is anything but irresponsible speaks volumes. I'm very glad no student has been mugged/shot/etc in two years, and I hope everyone there makes smart decisions in regards to their personal safety. Walking around at night drunk in Newark is not one of them.

Students have been mugged plenty of times. A dental student had his laptop stolen about a year ago while walking from the MSB to the dental school across the plaza. Many more had their phones snatched out of their hands between the Bergen building and the UH/ACC/DOC in broad daylight. To act like these problems don't exist is irresponsible. I've been working in Newark for over 5 years and know many of my colleagues who have been mugged/carjacked. While I have never experienced that personally, I do employ several safety measures: 1) only walk from one UMDNJ bldg to another with a group of people or utilize police escort if dark outside; 2) hide all valuables in the car out of sight; 3) don't wear expensive jewelry, show phone or laptop when in public; 4) utilize common sense.

I grew up in a city, so many of those things were already part of my upbringing, but for those of you who are considering coming to NJMS, don't let posts like these deter you from coming. If you know how to keep safe, your risks will be greatly diminished.

Couldn't have said it better myself...

Hey,

Any other incoming students doing HPSP and living at 180?

as like any other city, Newark can be dangerous. As long as someone doesn't act like an idiot they should be fine going to school at NJMS with minimal trouble. Been here for 3 years living both on and off campus, and during this time me and everyone else I know have been fine

well said... and totally agree - no one should base a decision off of it. just want others to be smart and use their heads (like in any major city that has crime issues).

Current and future NJMSers,
I am going to be an M1 next year and currently looking to live outside of Newark. Towns under consideration are Bloomfield, Montclair, Maplewood, and South Orange. I am registered to live in 180 West Market but I have little interest in actually living in Newark. I would prefer to live in Maplewood or South Orange because NJMS is a short drive down South Orange Ave or Springfield Ave. If anyone has suggestions on any of these towns and possible areas to live please share!!

Many of my co-workers live in South Orange and Bloomfield. Both are about the same distance. Bloomfield has a light rail stop for Newark City Subway as well as many bus routes to Newark (should your car die or be snowed it). South Orange has a NJ transit train stop which gives you easier access to NYC. Both have lots of nice restaurants. S. Orange has a great performing arts center. If I were looking for a place to stay, I would consider those two over Montclair and Maplewood. Oh, and I wouldn't call a drive on S. Orange Ave or Springfield Ave short. There is a lot of traffic during morning and evening rush hours and it seems that every block has a light. Good luck!

montclair is a hip place all the 3rd and 4th year students like to live. Nice town, lots to do, train to nyc, parkway is a fast route to school. Other popular towns for students are Hoboken, jersey city, bloomfield, and just about anywhere in between (nutley, clifton, all good close places). Have to say i dont really know any med student who lives in the oranges. All these towns have their pros and cons, and will certainly be cheaper than what they charge you at 180. if you live at 180 though you'll have roommates to hang out with and be more easily connected with the class socially.

Hi everyone.

I'm currently a lab tech at NJMS, but I'm moving out of town at the end of May. I have a room for sublet during the month of May in a 2-bedroom apartment in the Ironbound district of Newark ($550+utilities). If you're considering living in the Ironbound, this would be a good trial period--if you like it, you can talk to my landlord about leasing it after I move out, and if you don't, then there's no commitment beyond that first month.

There's a laundromat and plenty of street parking nearby. It's a 15-minute drive to campus, and 15-minute walk to Penn Station, and 10-minute walk to Harrison PATH station (which takes you to New York).

The Ironbound is the Portuguese/Latin American district, and there's a lot of good bars and restaurants in the area. If you're interested or want more information, PM me.

Hey everyone, I just had some Qs about stethoscopes at NJMS. Does NJMS provide them for incoming students? Are they part of tuition/fees and are we allowed to waive this to get money back? Are the ones they provide good or do most people invest in another? If so, which type? I've heard the Littman Cardiology 3 is the way to go, but wanted to hear what people think before I invest. Any and all input is appreciated- thanks!

I believe that the school provides you (aka part of tuition) with a clinical kit, which includes things like stethescope, blood pressure cuff... Not sure if you can waive it, but its worth a shot if you have the equipment.

I have a friend who lives in Ironbound and I absolutely love visiting him. Its an amazing area and I really recommend anyone who is interested in off campus housing to check it out. Very safe and lots of stuff to do. Being Portuguese (or being able to speak the language), will help you out, but its definitely not required. Ive decided to live in Harrison/Kearny, but I just wanted to chime in and say that Ironbound rocks 👍

Does anyone have an idea as to how long the priority alternate list is or whether or not the regular waiting list is usually reached?

Does anyone have an idea as to how long the priority alternate list is or whether or not the regular waiting list is usually reached?

I was placed on the regular waiting list last year and was advised from a member of the committee that chances were limited given the existence of a "priority" alternate list. However, from what I heard last years class retained a larger than normal amount of the early acceptees.

Withdrew my acceptance today. Hope it goes to one of you waitlist hopefuls!!

Littmann is a great stethoscope with a lifetime warranty I'm pretty sure. I have the cardiology master, and while totally unneccesary if you want something cheaper, I love mine. it basically has the bell and diaphragm on the same side, look it up if you have no idea what I'm talking about

Well hopefully there isn't as many early admissions this year and everyone that's been accepted gets into multiple schools 😉.

Does anyone know if applying multiple years in a row (in addition to adding experience to my application) will help my chances if I don't get in this year?

Maintain correspondence with Dr. Heinrich if you're on the wait list, and at some point discuss with him weaknesses in your application. Follow his advice and try to improve your application in the areas he mentions, and you should find yourself in much better position next year! (I cant imagine them not accepting one who makes positive changes in all aspects discussed).

Last year he noted that my application was completed late (October) and that I was lacking in experiences relative to healthcare. Hopefully anything you discuss will be as easy to fix as these were for me!

lol wait for the merger, you'll get an alert any time some1 gets mugged in all 5 of RU-NBs campuses (several a day). As a student in NB though, I never got RU-Newark alerts, so maybe theyll go away in July...

Spoke to Heinrich today. He basically said that they don't expect any wait list movement this year. Why even have a wait list if you aren't going to take anyone from it?!

Did he mean waitlist and priority waitlist, or just waitlist?

Spoke to Heinrich today. He basically said that they don't expect any wait list movement this year. Why even have a wait list if you aren't going to take anyone from it?!

It's because usually enough people drop out for spots to open up. But njms has been more and more competitive the last few years and appealing to applicants. I myself turned down multiple other schools including a top 20 and top 30 school because I thought njms was the best environment for me. Apparently lots of other students in the same position felt similarly this year.

They create the waitlist just in case they need it, not for the definite intention of using it. NJMS is a state school, and as such it is very very hard to predict exactly how many students will end up attending. Half of the accepted students might be accepted to higher ranked schools or might want to get out of the state. Also most schools overaccept in anticipation of students withdrawing, which also determines how soon a school needs to resort to using the waitlist.

NJMS is definitely gaining in appeal and becoming more desirable and hence competitive. They had a 32 average MCAT last year, which is pretty damn high for a state school, and shows the schools ability to recruit more and more top students. I turned down several schools for NJMS, and couldnt be more excited.

With that said, I think that if you are waitlisted and are interested in attending, you should send a letter of intent. Its very hard to tell how many accepted students might get pulled off of waitlists and eventually end up attending other schools. Therefore, even though waitlist movement is unanticipated, it might happen. Set yourself up to be in the best position if it does happen. Good luck!

It seems like our school tends to go in cycles. Like every school, we accept more students than we have seats for anticipating students to withdraw and then fill the remaining unfilled seats from the waitlists.

Recently however, there have been a few years where we have a badly overaccepted, meaning not enough people withdrew and we had more incoming students than we had seats for in the class. Of course, all of the students were accommodated because you can't turn some1 away after excepting them, but the following year you accept far less students to prevent the same issue from happening. Its these years you see a lot of waitlist movement

In response to a lot of waitlist movement, schools will then accept more the next year possibly leading to the same over acceptance problem. Its a cycle and hard to balance with more people applying every year, and NJMS's growing reputation as one of the better schools in the region and their ability to retain high quality applicants.

If we overaccepted, say for example 175 students for 160 spots are still committed to NJMS, 16 would need to drop out over the summer before someone can be accepted from the waitlist. All withdrawals need to be done by May 15. So now the only people who will withdraw are those who get off the wait list during the summer to schools they would rather be at than NJMS.

Thanks for the insight. Are there only 160 spots available or are you speaking hypothetically?
Also, has this occurred: "So now the only people who will withdraw are those who get off the wait list during the summer to schools they would rather be at than NJMS." for this cycle?

Thanks

I'd say yes to both questions. It's past may 15th so only someone who got off the wait list for a school they'd rather attend would withdraw their acceptance.

And if no one is being accepted off the wait list they most likely over accepted and need those extra students over 160 spots (or it may be 180 spots I forgot) to withdraw first before going to the waitlist.

Yea i guess the 160 spots is due to 20 or so spots going to 7 year med students?

It seems like from last year's thread that wl movement started at the end of may.

Hang in there folks!

I believe my class started at 170 ish, and I know there are people that did get off the waitlist for it. The year before was definitely overaccepted (closer to 179 I believe).

This includes the 25 TCNJ 7 years and several Rutgers 7 years.

And yes, at this point its past May 15. The only people will likely defect are those who get into other schools and choose them. But the only way they'll get into other schools if their wait list moves, so those schools would need their own defections to happen.

Basically at this point only a few people will likely defect, and if NJMS is overaccepted the waitlist will or not move depending on how many we're over. Some people may also decide to not got to medical school or defer for a year for various reasons.
