To mirror Chocofudges sentiment -- I am also an M1. Not much time floating around these days (talk to us after next Wednesday), but I'd definitely be happy to answer any questions. I'm OOS, a non-trad (32 years old), not from a science background. I would definitely be willing to meet up with anyone coming in for an interview. I actually know where some different rooms are now (barely).

Depends entirely on how picky you are. If you don't mind sleeping on a couch, having distractions, and spending your time before the interview talking to someone you never met before, go for it. If you prefer to spend your money to avoid the hassles, get a hotel.

It took exactly a week for me to get the secondary after verification. I don't know if it makes a difference if you're IS or OOS, but I am IS.

You can get one from download.com There are many options. Almost any program will work

Per the instructions, one of the LOR's have to been written 12 months ago. All of my LOR's are older than a year, so I am thinking about withdrawing.

I wouldn't withdraw right away. Try contacting them and seeing whether they'll still consider you even if you have older LORs.

How often does Wayne give out interviews? or is it rather random?

I think there's still hope. Just based on what I've read on here, I feel like OOS students get the secondary a bit later. Also, congrats on the LOR request from Mayo! 🙂

I believe they want at least one of your letters to be recent, I.e. within the last year. As long as you have at least one that is newer, the older ones are still fine. As far as not having a more recent LOR, definitely call admissions before withdrawing, and also see if one of your LOR writers will submit a new copy so the date is more recent.

I'm not withdrawing but that 1 prof retired and even the office secretary couldn't get a hold of him the last few weeks so I guess I have to find a new one. Thanks for the info though.

No, the point is, you need one of your letters to be new, the others don't have to be (unless they changed the rules this year). As long as at least one of your LORs are from this past year, you are fine using the older LOR.

That's a bummer. I went to UM too and am sorry to hear that because a 3.4 here is a pretty respectable GPA. I hope the rest of your cycle goes well! 🙂

I don't think they have a hard screen on the GPA...I'm OOS, non-trad with 33Q and both by cGPA and sGPA are lower than 3.4 and I got a secondary.

If this is a school you're genuinely interested in, you should contact them. I was rejected from U Wisc-Madison very early in the process, and, although I'm OOS, I hoped being an undergrad here would have helped. They were one of my top schools so I contacted them earlier this week by phone and set up a meeting with an admissions advisor. Maybe you could try something similar? I'm not sure if it'll change anything, but definitely worth trying if you care a lot for Wayne.

Also, for Canadians, do you need to send in your financial documents in order for the school to consider you for an interview? I read the form they sent me for secondary, it says to send the financial documents before Apr 31st 2013 ....

You only send your financial info if they accept you. I asked admissions the same question.

As for myself, received the secondary a few days ago, a day after I got the email stating that they would be reviewing my primary before sending a secondary. I was verified on 9/1, if I'm recalling correctly.

My stats are 3.80c/3.82s, 33P (9 PS, 10 VR, 14 BS), good LORs, have tutoring and 200+ hours hospital volunteering, research, and I did UG here... I really don't want to leave lol, I'm sick of moving around for schools. I hope my stats hold up, I never did shadowing and I still feel really crappy about it... I was getting set up to do some, but the doc kept giving me the run around and I was dealing with my MCAT retake at the same time... I hope it doesn't hurt my chances... would there be any point in setting up shadowing now, assuming I could? Haven't submitted the II yet.

Yes, continue building your resume as you apply. I was not able to add research experience to my application, but updated Wayne with my progress after a couple months of starting it. By the time I got my interview it definitely helped me to expand on my app with experiences I've had since my application submission. Just my 2 cents. Your app seems pretty strong, I wouldn't worry too much 🙂

Definitely get some shadowing in by your interview. I had no shadowing on my primary application, but mentioned that I had shadowed a couple days since applying when at my interview and my interviewer made a point of writing it down in my file. Not sure if it actually changed the decision, but I am sure he wouldn't have bothered to note it if no one cared either way.

Not really something worth making a special effort to update them about right now. I would either talk about it when you are at your interview, or if you haven't been invited by the end of the semester, send an update letter then with the full details of the research project. That would be a lot more meaningful than writing to them now saying you just started something that you have no progress or accomplishments to discuss yet.

I was complete the day after I sent everything in. It was around 8/16. Maybe they are getting bombarded with applications so they're taking longer? Also, if you live far away, maybe it's taking a while for your payment to reach them?

Being from OOS, expect to be grilled about why you want to go to Wayne State. They are looking for people who want to be doctors and remain in the Detroit area, or at least in Michigan, so have a reason or ties to the area to discuss. Depending on your interviewer, you also may be grilled about why you want to work with disadvantaged populations.

Other than that, the interviews tend to be very laid back and conversational. You will be more likely to be asked "tell me more about X in your activities" than you will be asked challenging interview questions. Relax and be friendly, and know something about the school, and you should be fine.

For transportation, you will probably want to rent a car since public transportation sucks in Detroit. You could probably manage without it, but the busses are not something I would rely on, and a cab would be about as much as a rental car. You will be flying into Detroit metro, and it is a straight drive down I-94 from there to get to the city and the med school campus.

I was there Tuesday. Don't take the bus. Cab from downtown to the med school was only ~10 bucks each way
