I went on interviews last year, and I'd say what felt like appropriate attire varied a little based on the location of the site. For instance, I interviewed at both a VA and a hospital in Miami, and I felt somewhat overdressed in a suit at both. Most of the women were wearing dresses or dress pants with a nice top. Then I interviewed at an Ivy on the east coast and would have felt underdressed in anything but a suit.
Anyway. I do think our field is a little more lenient with dress code than others, but I'd err on the side of more professional. And as someone already mentioned, it's certainly possible to show some uniqueness when wearing a suit with the shirt you choose to wear underneath, jewelry, shoes, etc.
