2012 APPIC Internship Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Wait a minute here . . . I'm confused on this one. I thought that this VA just had an open house and that everyone was invited. Are they sending out rejections & invites? 😕

The brochure says:

" Open House@font-face { font-family: "Arial"; }p.MsoNormal, li.MsoNormal, div.MsoNormal { margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt; font-size: 12pt; font-family: "Times New Roman"; }div.Section1 { page: Section1; The John D. Dingell VA Medical Center Psychology Internship Program does not require an in-person interview; however, to accommodate those students interested in visiting our facility, an Open House will be held on January 03, 2011, from approximately 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Please contact the Training Director to confirm attendance. The purpose of the Open House is to inform applicants about training opportunities and to introduce members of our supervisory staff as well as current interns.

The Program encourages interested applicants, who are not able to visit the Medical Center for the January Open House, to contact the Training Director, Psychology staff, and/or current interns via telephone or e-mail in order to obtain information about the training experience at our facility. The Psychology Section telephone number is (313) 576-1000, extension 63408. Because in-person interviews are not a part of the Program’s selection procedure, applicants will not be notified about their interview status. Interested applicants may contact the Training Director after reviewing this document in order to obtain the most current description of the Training Program. Though formal interviews are not part of selection process, there should be no expectation that contact with staff or interns will not affect how an applicant is rated."

Yeah, I know that's what it says. I tried to contact them in October to confirm for the open house, got no response - and of course that was well before I sent my application in. A friend of mine contacted and heard right away. I then applied anyway, later sent another email trying to confirm. Today received the email that said: " .Thank you for your interest in our psychology internship. I regret to inform you that your application is no longer being considered. We had a record number of applicants, many of whom are far along in their graduate programs. I wish you the best in the match and in your career as a psychologist..

..
.So....

I just received a rejection from the Winnipeg Residency.

Do you mean the Manitoba Clinical Health residency? Which streams did you apply to if you don't mind me asking?

Unfortunately, this is where I see this process going... Each year # of applicants grow, # of internships grow (grossly minute in comparison), unmatched students apply again the following year, disporportionality grows... 🙁

I know of at least two sites (my own site and a friend's) who have received record number of applicants by a substantial margin this year. Some people are trying to write it off as a fluctuation, but I see it as more of an increasing longstanding pattern. This system is seriously in trouble. I just wish it didn't seem to just be the people in the throes of it who notice.

I wish this were more generally the case but I'm pretty sure it's the exception rather than the rule. Some of the sites very strongly state that they give preference to individuals who do on site interviews. I love hearing those exceptional stories, I know someone who only applied to one rather competitive site (her favorite) and was matched there. Those things give me hope 🙂 Glad to hear that phone interviews aren't necessarily big fat 'no's when it comes to matching though.
This is my first year behind the scenes as an intern, and I can tell you that our site definitely tries not to discriminate-- in fact, they are surprised at how few people are choosing to do phone interviews this year, and were a little disbelieving when we told them we were lead to believe that phone interviews were looked down upon.

Some sites a say an on-site interview is required, others that it is preferred, very few (at least the ones I've come across) state that either is okay with no preference...

Actually, there was an article that came out in the New York Times addressing this matter - and APA's response to the letter... APA stated that it is advocating for more internships to open and seek accreditation, but it is NOT happening fast enough to accommodate the increase in student enrollment each year...

It really depends on the site, i know many college counseling centers only offer phone interviews now with an optional open house.

^^^I am having moderate/decent success with getting interviews, but as you said, it's a little better for those of us who are willing and able to be geographically unrestricted. But regardless, I absolutely agree that something is deeply wrong with this system. I cannot find a rhyme or reason to the evaluative process... I have received interviews that some of my colleagues have not and in some of those cases they were better fits. My colleagues have received interviews that I have not for which my skill set is a better fit. It's really hard to comprehend the process when 'fit' doesn't seem to be upheld in a lot of cases. It's difficult to make sense of this whole process... it's sort of Alice-in-Wonderland-ish... like we followed a rabbit hole into some strange universe where reason isn't much favored. It's exciting and terrifying and beyond ridiculous and absurd on many many levels.

I'm in this situation and the catch is that the latest flight out means leaving the first interview a few hours early 👎

Generally, what type of site is this?

Has anyone else NOT heard from Texas Children's Hospital? Yesterday a lot of people posted that they received invitations to interview, and today I saw that someone received a rejection. I still haven't heard anything though. Anyone else?

I'm still waiting on TCH too!! :luck::xf:

Very happy to hear of more examples who are pro-phone interviews... I wish it were more often the case and there were more sites openly like yours. For those sites that don't explicitly state it, it's hard to tell which sites would be genuinely accommodating and give a fair shot to both phone and in person interviewees.

Just received a voicemail from the training director from Washington D.C. Medical Center. Interview dates for a full day interview are January 6, 9th and 10th.

Good luck everyone!

Telephone invite for the DC VA internship program. Dates are 1/6, 1/9, and 1/10.

Congratulations! Could you say what time the voicemail was left?

Hello All:

I just joined the forum - nice to see how supportive everyone is being through this waiting game. I saw that University of Illinois at Chicago sent rejections already; was that for CAPS or the Dept. of Psychiatry? I applied to CAPS and got a generic email notification Nov. 17th confirming receipt of my application.

:soexcited:Got my first interview today! WEEEE. It was an personalized (Dear Name) from University of Missouri's Counseling Center. They are offering phone interviews from Dec. 12- Jan 7. I'm really excited as this was one of my top 5 sites. :soexcited:

Congratulations!!!!!! 👍:highfive::banana:

Do you mean the Manitoba Clinical Health residency? Which streams did you apply to if you don't mind me asking?
I applied to their behavioral medicine rotation. I hope you had better luck.

I've had a dry spell for days...I would really like the silence to end, preferably with good news. This is making me so antsy

Hi all,
First bit of news on my end - rejection email from Appalachian State. Not the best way to start hearing news, but rejections are just part of the whole process....

Best of luck everyone!

Oh, and that's Applacahian State University Counseling Center.

I'm still waiting on 11 sites. It's killing me.

I know, it's so frustrating. I'm still waiting on the bulk of mine as well (8 sites). I am an obsessive planner so it drives me nuts to be so useless and clueless about what my next 6ish weeks will look like.

Sorry to hear about the rejection. Do you mind saying which track at Yale Med you applied to? Thank you.

Oh no I am sorry to hear that but I think you are going to be hearing positive stuff from sites soon, I have a feeling. 😉

I am also waiting on 17. If I remember right you're also a college counseling center applicant. . . sometimes I wonder why I chose this part of the field. Hahaha 😎
Hahaha, same here - waiting on 16 CC sites, with 1 rejection in the bag. Ugh.

Mass e-mail rejection from University of Wisconsin-Madison Counseling Center

Also on the Hampton VA rejection list.

Rejection here too, but colleague at my advanced practicum site received an interview at the same time there. Grr.

Mass e-mail rejection from University of Wisconsin-Madison Counseling Center

Anyone hear from VA Connecticut Healthcare System OR Indianapolis Med Center?

I concur with your grrr. Still waiting for 14 sites, 0 for 4 on interviews. I applied to mostly college counseling centers.
