2012 APPIC Internship Application Thread

How did you feel about the match with the places you got rejected from?

I've got 3 interviews so far (paltry compared to one of my cohorts who's got like 7-8 out of 12), and 4 rejections. The 3 include one site that was a big big reach, one site that my application was incomplete at, and two sites where I felt I was a great match for.

The 3 interviews I got I have a great match for, so those were no surprises. They were pre-invite ranked 1, 3, and 4 on my list, so I'm quite happy but feeling the pressure. I've got 8 sites to hear from, and likely rejections from 3 of them since they've sent out invites already.

I also have 3 interviews, 4 rejections, and 9 left to hear. Also a better match with the the I do have interviews for...also feeling the pain of the cohort - two other women in my cohort have 12 and 13 interviews, respectively. Trying to stay hopeful 🙂

Just got an interview from Princeton House Behavioral Health, ED track- personalized email around 11am.

Mass email rejection from UChicago (expected since invites were given out a while back).

FYI - They don't feed you in the AM and it's over by lunch time (or was last year). They didn't even have coffee and you may need to get from one location to another so having a car is good (my sig. other had dropped me off for the interview and was picking me up afterwards so I needed to hitch a ride from another applicant).

I knew someone who had 11 interviews last year and didn't match. The bottom line is it's nice to get a whole bunch but you HAVE to know how to rock them. Some people look really good on paper but present terribly....

Which only means it's time to start practicing interview stuff...

I'm at 2 interviews, 7 rejections, with 13 left to hear. And yes I've already calculated the percentage and likelihood of getting more interviews. lol

I haven't heard anything at all in six days!!! I hope today brings some news.

I just got a phone call as a "save the date" for the University of Washington School of Medicine's open house for the Child Track on January 10th. She said the formal invitations would go out by email next week, but wanted to get on people's schedules before they filled up.

I'm also at 2 interviews, with 8 rejections, and 15 left. Also hoping for an invite to the Cleveland VA open house (neuro track) - anyone hear from them yet?

The news just said they had shots fired on campus...

Just got a text update saying at least two, including a campus police officer, have died and the suspect is still at large on campus. It's terrible that this happens at *any* school but to have it happen again at Va. Tech is devastating. Thoughts and prayers go out to everyone who is affected and if you are anywhere near the area, stay safe!!!

Finally got my first interview offer at PSU!

Received a personalized email. Interview options are Wed Jan 4th through Tues Jan 10 at 9am, 11am, 1pm, and 3pm & last 2 hours.

People traveling get priority in scheduling, which I thought was very considerate.

Hey Ms Bella,

I applied there as well and would love my first invite too haha. I haven't heard. So am I understanding your post correctly that they are notifying the out of state interviewees first? I am closer so I am hoping that is why I haven't heard back 🙂

I heard some good news today, which is helping bring down my anxiety. Email interview invites from Virginia Tech CC, Illinois State CC, and University of Notre Dame CC.

Rejection from College of William and Mary CC, I say this one coming as I was not a strong fit for them.

So I'm now at 4 interviews 4 rejections and waiting on 12.

Rejection from University of Michigan Counseling Center...and haven't heard from PSU Counseling Center...this is gonna be a bad day...:scared:

Anyone else have any more info onYale? I have not heard of anyone getting rejections yet. Have more people received invites via phone today? Thanks

Just got personalized email invite from St. Louis Psychology Internship consortium!

CierraNevada and Ms Bella - Just checking, you two are talking about Penn State Univ, right? Or are you talking about UPenn? People get them confused sometimes....

That has happened to very well qualified candidates in our program as well. Worrisome. I just hate to be compared, even though I'm applying for different types of sites than others.

Does anyone have any experience with asking why their application was rejected? How they went about asking - calling, emailing training director? And if they received a response with specifics - type of experience, program type, number of intervention/assessment hours, etc.?

My DCT advised us to wait until at least February to ask these kinds of questions because programs are so busy with the application cycle. I know last year a few people in my program contacted sites and got pretty specific info.

Mass email rejection from UChicago (expected since invites were given out a while back). Interviewed there last year. That's never a good sign right? Of my top 3 sites from last year, this year I got rejected from #1 and #2 and re-invited for interview for #3. I do know that some places don't interview the same person twice as a rule but that's definitely not the case everywhere.

I'm sorry to hear this.

I'm curious though - I haven't heard from them, either way. What should one make of that? Confusion.

Has anyone heard from Pace U. or Mount Sinai Adolescent Health Center?

Thanks!

Hang in there! I am at 5 interviews, 15 rejections, and 20 left to hear.

Wow, that is a lot of sites! Is this your first time applying or have you done it before? Also, I'm just curious (and could do the math myself if I had to), how much did it cost to apply to 40 sites (not including the Match fee)? Good luck!

If everything is "complete" without error, then you should be relatively fine. Mine was only paid but not completed even though i designated everything correctly. I don't think it happens much. I remember reading on the listserve others who had sites contact them regarding missing info (i.e. supplementary material) even though they had designated it correctly too.

Thx for this information!

First, I have heard that Columbia University - New York Presbyterian Hospital conducts screening interviews before offering a formal interview. Does anyone know if this is the case? Has anyone been offered a formal interview after their initial interview?

Second, has anyone heard from Montefiore Medical Center or know someone that has been offered an interview?

Third, I have seen that some people have been offered interviews and received rejections from Long Island Jewish Medical Center, specifically for the child and neuropsychology tracks. However, I have not seen any information posted about the adult track. Has anyone heard any news about the LIJ adult track, either personally or from colleague?

Any and all information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I am also waiting for Montefiore Medical Center.

Had a first interview with Columbia (Which was terrible, so I am not hoping for another) and didn't here anything about the second round.

Also applied to LIJ adults and did not hear anything. Or form Pace U.

Still waiting on NUMC - though I doubt it, cause everyone I know who applied there heard already.

Also waiting on Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center, North Bronx, Woodhull, Manhattan Psychiatric...

Fun, fun, fun.

Generally, what type of site is this?
Sorry for the delay in responding. I'm at a hospital based consortium. I also had a friend match at a different hospital based consortium after a phone interview the year prior. So phone interviews aren't always the kiss of death... though I agree, it depends what the site "officially" says about them.

Yeah, it was kind of insane but I paced myself... it is my second time around so I wanted to increase my scope in more ways than one. I cannot remember the exact dollar amount, but it definitely started to hurt after the 20 site mark. I am shooting for 10 interviews total, so I am breaking even so far. Good luck to you, too!

Hey all-

Has anyone interviewed at Utah state hospital before? Any tips? It says that they will have you interpret a psychological report/test data, so I am looking for pointers.

Thanks!

Rejection from Connecticut Valley for me as well 🙁
So, it's 1 interview, 7 rejections, and waiting on 18.

University of Oklahoma (neuro)
St. Joseph's Hospital
Wisconsin Internship Consortium in Professional Psychology
Wichita Collaborative Psychology Internship Program (KUMC-Wichita)

Any one hear from these sites yet?

Thoughts are with the students (and the police officers) and families of those at Virginia Tech. 🙁

A colleague got an interview from FMC Lexington in Kentucky (email with three dates to pick from)

Mass interview invitation email to Butler University/Aspire Indiana Consortium. Thank God - needed a pick-me-up after a string of rejections/possible rejections today!

Personalized [Dear My Name] interview email from UPenn CC. Say they got 197 apps and are interviewing 40.

Damn! Do you know when? Mass email? I have 8 interviews and 1 rejection, so I can't complain, but that was my #1 site :/
