2012 APPIC Internship Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Has anyone heard from the following:

Cal State, Northridge CC
Metropolitan State College of Denver
Purdue University CC
University of Maine CC
Towson University CC
Univ of North Carolina-Chapel Hill CC
Ohio State University CC
Temple University CC
Clemson University CC
University of Washington CC (Seattle)
University of Connecticut

Have only heard from 4 sites...getting ancy to say the least!

You applied to all CC, which are notorious for notifying late in the game. And just so you know Purdue states on their Appic page (and in the past) do not notify till after the 15. The semesters are just wrapping up, so CC are just beginning to make their final decisions. Hang in there you'll hear from them one way or another.

In my program someone with 17 interviews didnt match and another person in that same cohort with only 1 interview matched. Like the lotto its a $1 and a dream or its 1 interview and a dream....

Deep...

Please stop with the worse case possible of how many interviews a person can get and not match talk...its not helping lol

Maybe not helping your state of mind but it definitely helps to vent, haha.

Yup, last year I got rejected from UMaine on either the 14th or the 15th, so pretty darn late. The college counseling centers must be taking their timing cues from the undergrad students. 😛

Thank you for the response!!!

thank you for the feedback!

Portland VAMC just sent out an invite for their open house on January 12. Addressed "Dear Portland VAMC Internship Applicant."

How was it terrible?

1. I live in NY, so perhaps that's why Columbia explicitly said to me that they have two rounds. I have no idea what they say to people who need to travel.

As for the horror of the actual interview - the questions were weird:

"Tell me an anecdote, a story, that shows who you are"
"What don't you like about our program"
"What was you worst clinical moment"

Stuff that really threw me off. I think I sounded insecure and nuts.

I'm sorry you had a negative experience 🙁 Those are definitely tricky questions!

A faculty member in my program shared some great advice that I think might be helpful to others who face similar types of questions on the interview trail --

When sites throw you "trick questions" that prompt you to focus on your weaknesses or say something negative about yourself or your training program or their internship site, don't take the bait! Turn the question around somehow and focus on "challenges that have been overcome", "growth opportunities", or somehow add a positive spin. In his experience (and from talking to internship selection committee members) sites ask "trick questions" because they are looking for reasons to take applicants off their list. It is sneaky and it sucks but, unfortunately, that seems to be the way things are.

I had a vision of having a support group where someone would stand up and say "My name is Joe and I was rejected from 4 sites today..." and we loudly respond in unison "THEIR LOSS!"...That would be cool.
count me in!

This is helpful thanks! I have been practicing a bit, trying to come up with an acceptable answer for "what 3 things do you not want us to know about you?" Do you deflect, do you disclose, do you admit to being completely neurotic about checking this site?

haha, I think I would have been a touch hysterical if posed those questions... Thanks for sharing.

Rejection from Northwestern CC by personalized email this afternoon.

Just got a mass e-mail from VA Puget Sound (Seattle VA) saying that my application is no longer under consideration. Darn. Ah well.

Wow, I need to seriously work on interview prep... if I were to get anything even remotely like at least that first question I would probably blank entirely, turn red, and start sputtering myself into a stupor. If you came up with anything you did much better than I would have, lol.

If you get a question that stumps you, it's totally okay to just say, "Hmm. Let me think about that for a moment." And just take a minute, clear your head, take a deep breath and then answer. It'll show them that you can handle difficult situations/things that catch you off guard in a therapy room. They'll remember that more than they will your actual answer.

Sorry you had such a bad experience with them. I know someone who interviewed there last year. She described it as confrontational, as well. Personally, I didn't apply there mainly because they require Rorschach experience, and I cannot afford obtain training in this method of assessment prior to internship. Here's to hoping that your next interviews are stellar experiences!

What on earth could you possibly say to the second one that wouldn't be negatively interpreted? Seriously..suggestions??

Can I just answer: "I don't plan to tell you three things that I don't want you to know about me. Or any things, for that matter."? or "Well, one of them is what I think of that question. Another is what I think of your humanity for asking it." 😛 lol

Me too! Congrats jimmyachance! 🙂

Congrats to you both! Just got a rejection from UPenn... somewhat unexpected, considering I was a practicum student there and in the past they would usually at least give courtesy interviews. Oh well... almost 200 apps is a crazy number... onward and upward!

Agreed! Sage advice.

Forgot to say that on a better note got an interview notification from VTech CC although I am a little freaked out by today's shooting...

Received rejection email today. 5 rejections 1 interview👎

It makes sense that the process of your answer will stand out more than the content. Great advice! I would simply suggest not taking too long answer. To reduce the stress on myself, I have decided that it is simply a matter of fit if they don't like my answer. For example, do you really want to be at a site that relies heavily on vexation or "tricks" to select applicants. I know that we all "just want to match," but it's worth thinking about.

Maybe something like "Hmm...that's a tough question. I know I would enjoy x offered by your program, and I am really excited to gain experience with y. The rotation in z is a great match for my interests bla bla bla. I'm finding it very difficult to answer this question, and I think it's because I was very careful to apply to sites, such as yours, that are a great fit for my training experiences and goals"

Basically they want YOU to tell THEM why you are NOT a good fit for the site. Don't do it, do the exact opposite 🙂

My weight, my e-mail password, and my ATM pin. 😉

Thanks! You're sweet to be so supportive.

And yeah, I came up with an answer, which is why I think I am not getting a second invite.
🙂

The rest of my response was very much like what you described. Redness galore.

🙂

I had other interviews that were much better... At least I felt better after. But now of course I am doubting myself and remembering stupid things that I said on those too.

This process is sure waking all my demons.
🙂

Anyone gotten interviews at Johns Hopkins CC? I saw some rejections previously, but didn't see anyone list an invite. For now I might cross them off my list - the ivys seem to be getting a HUGE number of apps this year, even more than in past years!

Fantastic. I guess I didn't think just to deflect the question 🙂

This afternoon I received a personalized email invitation to the VA Puget Sound Seattle open house. I was expecting a rejection from this site since invitations to the open house went out last week according to this forum. For people who are losing hope, please do not count a site out until you receive a rejection! Good luck everyone- 1 more week to go until Dec 15.

"Tell me an anecdote, a story, that shows who you are"

I was born and raised in west Philadelphia. One day, when I was out playing basketball in my particularly bad neighborhood, I got in a scuffle with two gentlemen. My mother became frightened on my behalf, and sent me to southern California to live with my aunt and uncle in Bel Air. I had the privilege of sitting in first class and they even served me orange juice in vesicle typically reserved for champagne. When the taxi picked me up from the airport, it seemed a little strange, and I remember a particularly bad smell. Nevertheless, by the time I arrived at my aunt and uncle's house, I knew I was home. I was sure that several seasons...ooops, I mean years...of hilarious hijinks would ensue.

LMAO! Lets all use anecdotes from such high quality 90's TV shows.

I must have missed the bickering...Good Luck!

This forum needs a "like" button like facebook has 👍 maybe that will work haha

How would you word an e-mail asking a TD to change a interview date that I confirmed? If I drive with friends I will only spend $75 vs $600 (solo pay for airfare, hotel, car rental)

It looks like rejections/interviews went out for at least 1 of the tracks at Franciscan . . . has anybody heard either way from other tracks?
Received an interview today around 3pm for the medical placement track
