Unexpected Fellowship opening (accepted applicant quit) for July 2012 in Hematopathology at Penn State Hershey Medical Center.

Call them for info, I'm just posting as a favor so don't PM me on this one.

Can believe there no obligatory Penn State jokes posted yet...

Does anyone know if there are any unfilled or unexpected openings for 2012 hematopathology fellowships?

Beth Israel Medical Center, NY has a 2012 opening. The candidate quit. You can contact [email protected].

It is a boring fellowship though. Not much to do and you will end up with boredom everyday. However, hours are probably one of the best (typically 10am-3pm with a 1hr lunch break) and they pay well, like 70k for pgy5. And you can get reimbursed for subway passes. If you are looking to kill a year with a sort of fellowship and enjoy the cultural diversity in NYC, it's not a bad choice. 🙂

LOL at it's a "boring fellowship." How does this program get accredited by ACGME then? Doesn't ACGME make sure the fellowship is adequate enough so that it is not boring? What do you mean by boring anyways? Like you don't do anything and sit around and surf Facebook all day. Having said that, I believe there are programs that don't train you well in certain aspects of pathology like CP. How programs get away with that, I dont know.

4 hours of work a day sounds great. I just hope these fellows can pass the heme boards and be competent enough to practice as a hematopathologist.

How do you just quit a fellowship? So the fellow is unemployed or transferred to another program?

Fellowships are definitely reviewed by the RRC to make sure they have adequate volume and diversity. There's a whole list of requirements for every type of program (pathology or other; posted at ACGME.org and actually can make interesting reading). However this can be gamed; the inspectors can only dig as deep as they can, and the trainees may or may not blow the whistle since they do not necessarily stand to profit if their program gets into trouble. This Beth Israel program may also more stimulating than it sounds, or something.

As far as how you could quit a fellowship--the person probably got a job offer. This scenario is actually one of the arguments for changing the calendar for pathology fellowship selection. You are going to have a lot of people having second thoughts or changes in life circumstances, in a world where you commit to your fellowship 18 months before starting it.

Great institution! Lots of smart people there, especially given the affiliation with the illustrious St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital! The person who is looking for a fellowship should jump at this chance. In fact, I'm going to forward this ad to everyone I know who is interested in hematopathology! I better get on this!
