2012 Nontrad Applicants' Progress Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
It is kind of driving me nuts that Wayne State has not sent out any secondaries yet. I started out the cycle without any real anxiety, but even accepting that I am likely re-applying next year isn't keeping me from re-checking my e-mail constantly.😳 Oh well. 😀

I'm applying EDP to LSU-Shreveport. My application was verified early July within hours of when they received my last transcript. My secondary is complete but am waiting on 7/16 MCAT results. I'm hoping that my previously MCAT, however abysmal, will make me complete for EDP and then they'll look at my new score when considering me for an interview. I guess I'm optimistic. I'm still waiting on my committee letter. I just sent an email reminding them that I'm applying EDP and the deadline is Aug 1.

This is my second year applying but never got the first communication from school until I got rejections letters back in April. I have high hopes for this year. I'm not getting any younger.

University of Chicago no-go 🙁

I'm waiting on verification and committee letter, glad to see you got one without the other. I was getting concerned that the committee letter may be necessary for verification, silly I know but starting to freak. I was told my letter would be up in a week over two weeks ago, don't want to be pesty but it's driving me bonkers not having everything complete. Good luck!

Pritzker had the honor of being the first rejection I received in my cycle. 😉 I did appreciate their timely response... the first one makes the subsequent ones easier to handle.

Good luck to all! Felt like I should drop by this thread and wish all my fellow non-trads the best!

As for me:
Mayo Rejection this week (no surprise, but loved the school)
Complete everywhere else except U of Colorado, UCSF (no secondary invite so far), and Oregon.... no secondary invite yet. See mdapps for the fun details!

Received my secondaries from Wayne State today. Need to send them in this coming week (they give 4 weeks to complete but I am on vacation the second week of August and want to send them before that) so I need to start thinking about how to answer the questions.

Still waiting on my college (they write a committee LOR for alumni 5 years out, win) to submit those.. but secondaries are mostly completed, but I won't get any official updates etc until the LOR arrives (~2 weeks).

Secondaries done at 7 schools. Application reciept notices from 4. Under review at 2. No information yet from 2, including my state school.

Secondaries materially done, just a couple marginal choice schools that I decided I didn't want to spend the money to complete the secondaries. Of course, as the month wears on, if I don't start receiving interview invitations, I might well reconsider that.

Just thought I would check in and post a few thoughts about the one non-trad specific interview question I've gotten. The interviewer asked me if I was "ready to deal with all these 20 year-olds?" I talked about how impressed I was with their drive, maturity and intelligence. I also mentioned that I was excited to work and study with young, energetic people who were excited to be there.

Other than that, all the questions I got were pretty standard.

Best of luck to all of you!

Attended my one and only interview yesterday (only applied to one school this year). Went well, vary laid back, and the interviewer told me the only weak area of my application was what I was already aware of, so if I don't get in this cycle, I have a great chance next year. Good luck all.

congrats! sending you good vibes 🙂

Secondaries all done. Got my new MCAT score a few days ago, 31 🙂

Applied ED at the Medical College of Georgia and got my acceptance email this afternoon! Emotions so beyond words.

Or "I can drink them all under the table, so I'm not too worried."

Just got back from an interview at UTMB Galveston. It went pretty well, I think, and my SO and I really enjoyed Galveston. The last time we were visited, Ike had not yet hit, we had zero of our three cats, and we were still engaged. The mini-vacation was very pleasant. 🙂

It still feels a little strange to be a med school applicant though. One year ago I was taking Gen Chem 2 and the MCAT was a very distant obstacle. I was volunteering at the hospital and saw a whole bunch of interviewees in suits walk by periodically... and now I'm one of those! :xf:

Hope the rest of you all are doing well.

Careful, I think your Wisconsin is showing.

Congrats on the first acceptance, stsa!

I agree with the others that it's pretty surreal actually being at this point. My one and only interview is in 5 1/2 days. Not that I'm counting or anything... :xf:

Hey,

I'm not sure if this is the correct place, but I was just feeling great and wanting a place to share with people who are going through the same thing. I'm, I guess, a baby non-trad (I'll be 25 soon; I've been out of school for a few years now.) I have a slightly below average GPA for allopathic schools with a pretty awful downward trend my last year and a half, and a decent but not amazing MCAT. I went into this process really worried after seeing all of the people with 3.9 GPAs and >33 MCAT scores. So far, I've received 2 interviews, one of which was from a school I thought would probably just throw my application away after seeing my scores in orgo!
I honestly feel that the reason I've at least had a little luck is due to the experiences I've gained post graduation. I know I wasn't ready for medical school directly out of college, but now I'm excited and eager to tackle this! Good luck to everyone applying this cycle; hopefully we'll be classmates soon! Yay!

Glad to hear life is treating you well, Bluepanda. 🙂

I was fortunate enough to receive several interviews in the last few weeks, and now I just realized how far behind I am in classes. 😱 I'm in Texas, so the absolute earliest I might get accepted anywhere is November 15. So let the two-month waiting game begin!

Gotta rep somehow. 🙂

Good luck! I'm sure you'll rock it. It's a totally relaxed thing.
Thanks. 🙂 It can't be any worse than the interview with Oshkosh. I had to take a timed mechanical aptitude test where they sent me out of the room, broke some part of this amazingly complex machine-in-a-box, brought me in, and timed how long it took to figure out what was broken. Compared to that, this should be a breeze. 😎 Although I do keep blanking when random people ask my why I want to be a doctor, which doesn't really bode well...

How're classes going? Is this still something you'd recommend?

Just flipping reject me already. Seriously.

My brilliant idea to burn the candle at both ends and overextend myself in order to get my mind off of applications is starting to take its toll.

So far, so good. Our first block is the start of our physicianship course, so it's not the firehose just yet. It's kind of nice that they ease us into school this way, and a lot of what the presentations/lectures have been about really speak to the reasons why I'm changing careers (patient interactions, soft skills, etc.). However, I feel like I don't know what they could possibly test us on. Anyway, we'll see how I feel once I'm in the thick of science courses--but for right now I would absolutely recommend ditching your paycheck for this. 😉

Scotch this weekend?

Thanks everyone! I'm excited and scared to start school again. I used to take notes on paper at MUSOD in 1998, now the kids bring lap tops to class! LOL

Dude, I met a kid in Chem discussion last week who had never used a chalk board.

I had my Medical College of Wisconsin interview (my one and only, EDP) on Friday with 4 other EDPers. Decision is Thursday with notification on Friday. I think it went alright, but they say you tend to overestimate youreslf in interviews. We'll see, I guess.

:luck: Hope you get that good news email!

It's great to see so much progress so early in the non-trad forums! I've been away for a month or so while I panicked over M1 biochem, and it seems like I've missed a lot.

Congrats to those with acceptances and interviews already! Good luck to everyone this cycle and I'm sure if you don't have any interviews yet they'll start rolling in soon enough! :luck:

Zero progress to report. Really really hoping for an interview.

Primary is complete on 9-16.

About 25% of my secondaries have come in. Submitted them within 24 hours of receiving them. Hopefully I hear about an interview in the coming weeks.

Waiting on the rest....

So, no email on Friday, which was immensely depressing.

However, there was a rather large envelope in the mailbox this afternoon - ACCEPTANCE!!!

I'll be starting MCW in August 2012, possibly on my 31st birthday. :soexcited:

What a way to start a new decade. 😀

I'm hoping I'll get to interview at MCW sometime this fall.

I'm totally taking credit for this. 😉 Congrats!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Am a PA for about 1yr. U know i have most of the prerequisites including calculus 1 and organic chem 1and both general bio 1 n 2.

BUT do i necessarily have to have the other classes like calculus 2 n 3, O-chem 2 and Biochem ( 4 Big classes in all )
How helpful are they towards studying for the MCAT.
Do you think they will still require me to get those classes first prior to applying.

Am between either spending 1yr or more taking those classes which I need A'S with my crazy job schedule
OR start right away studying for MCAT since PA program had some sciences also.

who would u recommend i talk to also for academic counseling do i need to go to medical school campuses .

thank u.
