2012 Nontraditional Personal Statement Readers

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Sure, I'll read, but I have no qualifications at all, which I think may be beneficial to some degree for those that want to be able to sound good and flow well for the layman.

I'd be happy to read personal statements as well. I'm an older nontrad, English major, Kaplan tutor, have successfully navigated the tempest that is med school application.

I'm happy to read personal statements... here's my personal statement about reading personal statements:

"I'm happy to offer advice on personal statements with an emphasis on one of two options: 1) You're changing from another professional career (PhD, DDS, PharmD) to MD/DO, or 2) You've already had help with your statement and you'd like fresh eyes. In addition to the general rules that someone else posted, I reserve the right to limit my feedback to whatever I can type out in 15 minutes, which I think is fair because I'm offering to be not the first or only person who helps you out.

My credentials: Father was a college English teacher, so I'm decent with grammar. I was a successful applicant to MD/DO schools after finishing a science PhD. One year as a university psychology instructor. Numerous peer-reviewed articles published and numerous grants and scholarships received based on written applications, so I think I'm fairly good at knowing what people want to hear."

Are any of the readers in this thread still available? Although I'm young, I guess being a mother and having graduated 2 years ago makes me non-traditional, so I would really like advice on my PS from other non-trads who could somehow relate and understand what I'm trying to convey. I'm not really interested in editing, but rather reading for content, so if anyone can help me out please let me know. I figured I would post this before randomly pm'ing anyone since this thread is kind of old. Thanks!

Sure thing. Just pm me here with it. 🙂

Bumping for those looking for PS readers.

All of a sudden, I have been getting a bunch of PMs from random people looking for help with PSes. Two things: one, I have already clearly stated that I would *not* be available to read PSes after April. Please respect that and do not send me PS reading requests, especially if I have no idea who you are. (Unless you post fairly regularly in this forum, odds are good that I don't know who you are.) It's July, and I'm an intern. Yes, I'm still busy!

Second, this whole thread here is full of people who are ready and willing to help. If you need someone to read your PS, you should feel free to take advantage of this resource, within the stipulations given by each volunteer.

Thanks for your understanding, and best of luck to all the applicants. 🙂

Act now by sending me a PS via PMs because I am in bed coughing my brains out and bored to tears. 🙁

I am happy to read some PS's. I don't have any qualifications per se, with the exception of a professional writing (television) background...

PM me. D712

Would anyone consider reading my personal statement? In the past many of you have offered to read Personal Statements. I am a non traditional student applying at the age of 35.

I thank you in advance and look forward to hearing from you.

I would like to update that I am no longer available to read PSes anymore. I just started school myself and am focusing on that. Good luck to everyone!

I've watched this thread for a while and was reluctant to jump in with an offer to help folks with their PS's because of a few concerns: 1) I'm not sure what SDN feels about members doing this sort of thing; and, 2) I don't have a lot of free time to serve as anyone's PS "advisor."

I guess now that SDN dosen't object to members offering some free advice on PS's. And I guess that I could try doing this a few times and then stop if it got undoable.

So I'll invite "non-traditional" applicants to contact me for advice on their PS's. I'll have to limit it to "non-Trads." I have some experience as a "non-Trad," since I majored in English Literature, and graduated from med school at 35 (I got graduate degrees in English and while I was working on my PhD I completed my pre-med science courses and got a BA in Biology). So, PM me and I'll see what we can do. 🙂

Sure, I'll read if anybody wants help. I don't have any professional qualifications either, but I've proofread a manuscript or two to help friends before, and I can certainly express whether I'd feel interested in getting to know more about you or not. How much more goes into reading these personal statements than that? I'm free 'til the 29th.

PM away!

Sorry, guys and gals, I can't be a reader any more. I am starting class on Monday and will be too focused on that. GL to everyone applying this year!

Since my school doesn't start for 2 more weeks, I can be a reader for anybody until August 27th or so. I've revised quite a bit of personal statements for other students *informally* and received great feedback for being thorough and critical in my changes.

I've posted this before, but if someone needs a set of eyes, I'm here. I've been a professional, albeit television, writer for 15 years. Have not been accepted to med school yet, but have helped countless friends and colleagues with this sort of thing before and have very happy "customers." 😀

I'm free for about 2 weeks.

PM me.

Just wanted to ditto what Doctor712 said. I've used his help to revise my PS and he's done an excellent job for me. I definitely recommend his help for anybody who needs that "set of eyes" right before sending off their personal statement.

PS finished, and app submitted! Just wanted to come back and give a special shout-out to doctor712, PTWOB02, QofQuimica, and n3xa. Thanks for all the positive feedback and suggestions! Everyone has been extremely helpful, and I'm thankful beyond words 😍 Good luck to all those applying this cycle!

May someone read my Personal Statement? I would like to submit my application in a few days.
