The Army specialty results were released today. The total # I am indicating may not include individuals who applied but were not included as alternates...I have no way of knowing that at this time.

2 yr AEGD
20 accepted (9 HPSP)
7 alternates (2 HPSP)

OMFS (normal number is 10 slots/yr - this means they had to fill a slot from the previous year of someone who declined)
11 accepted (7 HPSP)
5 alternates (1 HPSP)

Perio
4 accepted (1 HPSP)
4 alternates (1 HPSP)

Prosth
4 accepted (2 HPSP)

Endo
8 accepted (1 HPSP)
6 alternates (2 HPSP)

Pedo
2 accepted
6 alternates

Ortho
3 accepted (1 HPSP)
4 alternates

Dental informatics
1 accepted

Public Health
1 accepted
1 alternate

The list did not include 1 yr AEGD slots. I do not have that information, and do not know when/how it will be released.

Again this list may not be all inclusive, but is the best I can provide at this time. Please note 2 things:

1) Some specialties are not open to HPSP students or direct accessions to apply for. Each year the decision is made by the Corps Chief (Dental General) what specialties will be open. It can vary by year - most are usually open - pedo, ortho, and endo are the ones that are sometimes not open.

2) In many specialties HPSP students beat out dental officers. The board looks at the whole package. They try to take the best qualified applicant. Notice that 63% of the OMFS selected were out of school...this is the highest I've seen in 10 yrs.

I will not be releasing names. Please contact graduate dental education if you have other questions.

Thank you for posting - very helpful info. Quick questions (not sure if you can answer these and I apologize if so).

In regards to OMFS, After comparing these results to 2011 (3 alternates were selected), does that mean none of the alternates wanted the spot for last year (since 11 were accepted this yr). If so, if you are selected as an alternate is there a chance of actually getting a spot? or is it a polite way of saying you were not chosen for this year?

I know you said it multiple times but if you ever find out how many total applicants (not including those selected and alternates) that would be great info to share (if this is even possible) to gauge future application cycles. Comparing these numbers to last year almost makes it look all-inclusive but (as you mentioned) there's no way of knowing.

Thank you for your time.

Is it possible for a HPSP to apply to an AEGD-1 and a specialty program such as AEGD-2 at the same time? If you get into both programs do you have the option to decide which program you want to do? Do you get a say in location?

In your D4 yr, everyone has to apply for the AEGD-1. That s mandatory-if you dont, you are out of HPSP, and pay back money to the us gov. But it is not mandatory to take the spot, when you are given one (many dont). Other programs, such as os or aegd-2, it is optional to apply. You get to choose only one, though (i e if you choose os, you cannot apply aegd-2 that yr). If you get into both aegd-1 and a specialty of your choice (likely), you get to choose one (for me, i just got my letter for aegd-2, and i have early january to respond).

Locations differ by specialty-you can find them on MODS or somewhere on SDN. You rank the locations when you fill out the application (say hawaii 1, texas 2, so forth). Hope it helps!

Do you already know where you will be going for AEGD-2? Also, Is the start date for the AEGD-2 late like AEGD-1 for people who are going to BOLC after graduation? Do you incur additional service commitment for AEGD-2, whereas AEGD-1 is a neutral year?

I don't know yet. We ll find out in Feb or march. AEGD-2 report date is june, although the program starts in July. ADSO for AEGD-2 is 2yrs to be served concurrently with existing HPSP obligations, so if you start the residency right after d school, it is like neutral yrs. You can search the threads to find out more on this. Hope it helps!

So it's safe to say that those who are going to BOLC after graduation can only apply to AEGD-1s and not AEGD-2s or any other specialty programs during their senior year?

The 2 yr AEGD and all other specialties start on/around 1 July each year. That is why if you haven't completed OBLC prior to graduation, starting a specialty immediately after school is not an option.

The 1 yr AEGD has a 1 yr ADSO, but it is paid back concurrently with HPSP. The same thing happens with any other specialty - they are neutral years while in training, and have an ADSO paid back concurrently with your HPSP.

No - they can apply to everything. All individuals accepted for specialty training are being selected for a start date 18 months later. Thus those on active duty as well as HPSP and direct accessions will all start the following summer (not the immediate summer). HPSP students would have to decide whether they want to do the 1 yr AEGD or specialty training as ALTOSS mentioned since the 1 yr AEGD would overlap the start time of the specialty training the following year.

I don't know the answer to your question about OMFS. I have known many people to be pulled off of the alternate list for the 2 yr AEGD, so it is not just for looks 🙂

So, if you are accepted into a specialty training program during your senior year of dental school and wants to attend, then you should not do the AEGD-1. What will you be doing then during that 1st year of service and would it put you at any disadvantage?

If you get accepted for specialty training you have to choose to either do the 1 yr AEGD or the specialty training - you can't accept both the same year. You would work as a general dentist at the location that your specialty training will be held at until your program starts.

My husband is a D4, graduating this May. Does anyone know when the 1 yr AEGD selections will be released? Or if they already have been? Is it emailed or do they send a letter of acceptance? We just want to know a yes/no for sure so we're not constantly wondering about it. Thanks🙂

I received news of being an alternate choice for 1 year AEGD today via gmail. Do all 1 year AEGD spots get filled every year?

Many will decline their spots (including myself). A girl told me a few yrs ago a person from DENTAC called her personally to do it but she still declined.

What is considered in an application for AEGD-1? Is it competitive? Also, after you do an AEGD-1, when you can apply to and AEGD-2 or other specialty programs? Do you have to wait until your initial obligations are served? Thank you!

Typically all spots get filled prior to the summer, but some will decline their initial acceptance, so alternates will get the chance.

You may apply for any of the specialty programs next fall while you are in your first year of active duty. If selected you would move to the location that the program will be at and work for a year as a general dentist and begin the specialty program the following summer.

Do the 18 months spent at the base prior to the start of specialty training count towards your payback obligation?

Any updates from the alternate list (especially oral surgery)? Just thought I'd see if anyone on SDN had any info about whether or not any alternates were/will be picked up this year..

Thanks

My recruiter mentioned that there are good chances for qualified D4's to get accepted into specialities of their choice. I wonder if the Army sees students at an advantage for residencies for OMFS and if so why?

Given 2 equally qualified individuals with similar grades/scores - the advantage will likely go to the one who is already on active duty since they have additional items that can be evaluated (annual evaluations, LORs from dental officers, possibly a 12 month AEGD, etc...). That being said, D4s can and have competed successfully for more than 50% of the available openings for OMFS in past years. Each year how a D4 competes will be based upon what the overall applicant pool looks like.

I'm D3 and curious about AEGD process. I know that D3 will get email in summer regarding post grad program. Does AEGD selection process requires personal interview as well? Or just GPA/class rank, LOR, extra-curriculum? Just want to plan my externship at my school for next summer and fall.

Thank you in advance. 🙂

Only OMFS has an telephone interview. All others just require the standard packet (grades, scores, LOR, etc...)

I got few questions here:

1. How many army dentists/HPSP students applied in each program? I just wanted to get a
rough figure in number of applicants!

2. What does alternates refer to? Does it refer to applicants who chose to apply to other programs as well?

An alternate in this circumstance is the same as an alternate for dental school. Alternates are those who are not selected, but if an opening occurs they will be offerred the spot.

They are not people who were given a spot in a different specialty and then put on another specialty as an alternate. They may have applied for different specialties and not been given either one.

Thanks! Is there anyway in knowing how many applicants were there? 😕

As mentioned on the first thread of this post - unless you call graduate information that is not information that is released.

krmower do you have any info as to the GPA stats of 2-yr AEGD applicants/accepted? Or would this be something only available from graduate information?
