I thought the posts from the previous year or two was excellent for those going down the path of matching during those years. As a 2014'er, it was really educational to read some of those comments as I'm getting ready to apply this year. Hopefully, we can replicate some of that.

I'll post updates as edits throughout the process and hopefully others will contribute as well. At the end of the process, I'll write up the programs I applied to, my strategy, tips, and my stats so that hopefully the 2015'ers can benefit from what I learned.

Approximately 45 programs and 50 spots this year. It has been trending up since it's inception in 2007. I've edited my original post with the ACGME list of programs.

Yes, I received a very brief reply within an hour. Based on the style of the e-mail, I think it may actually be from Dr. Sumpio, rather than from an assistant, so I assume that replies are subject to the vagaries of his clinical schedule.

Just in case anyone had issues with this...USF is accepting 2 residents again this year. Our website was temporarily down, but is now back and functioning (though not recently updated). If anyone has questions I'm happy to discuss. (Current 0+5 resident)

Anyone know what happened to University of Washington program?

I also heard Alleghany has withdrawn from match as well
 
hi guys, im applying next year but thinking about electives. is there a forum somewhere here that talks about the diff programs, advice for aways, etc? are you applying solely 0+5 or is vascular and gen surgery still recommended?
 
Are there still 3+3 programs? I am a DO student interested and know that integrated vascular is a LONG SHOT (to say the least) for a DO. Thoughts? Feelings?

You will find a variety of opinions based on the topic depending on who you talk to. The majority of people believe that you should do 1-3 aways during the beginning part of your 4th year to obtain solid letters of recommendation and see how some of the "top tier" programs operate. I would agree with this for the most part. One of the most important parts of the application are the letters of recommendation; a strong letter from a well known vascular surgeon can go a long way. Remember that vascular is a small field and everyone knows each other.

However, if you have known for a long time that your are interested in vascular surgery and you have strong letters from your home institution surgeons who are fairly well known in the field. You can skip the away rotations and focus on what you find important during your 4th year. For example, I focused on medicine during my fourth year and did electives on nephrology, pulmonology, and cardiology in my final year of school. If you have a strong application, be aware that away rotations can hurt you if you dont walk in from day one and kick ass.

In terms of applying to one or the other, you just have to gauge your own competitiveness and make a plan. Half the group this year did only vascular, and the other half did a combined application. The paradigm is growing every single year, and I think students are getting more comfortable doing just one.

There are still 3+3 programs available across the country. I think there is a list on the SVS website under the education subsection, but I couldn't find it again when I looked. I only went on 13 vascular interviews, but I did not see a single DO on the trail (but did see 1-2 caribbean students for what it's worth).
 
How did everyone do on the match? Any input for a current MS3 on which programs to apply to for my sub-i rotations? Is anyone going to the Boston SVS meeting?
