2013-2014 APPIC (internship) interview thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm wondering what people's experiences are with being "waitlisted." I'm waitlisted with the Louisiana School Psychology Internship Consortium. Do these ever turn into actual interviews? Also, is it worth going to the interview? I assume I am probably at the bottom of the pile because I wasn't offered an interview up front, so it seems like a long shot. But maybe people do get accepted from the waitlist!

I got waitlisted last year and didn't hear from them again, but I have heard rumors of people occasionally being interviewed off the waitlist, or of sites saying you can rank them from the waitlist (implying they'll rank their waitlisted candidates).

Texas State University Counseling Center! Personalized email for an interview invite! Monday, December 16th, Friday, January 3rd and Monday, January 6th Phone interviews are Tuesday, December 17th, Thursday, January 9th and Friday, January 10th and typically last an hour and a half.

SO EXCITED!!!

I saw the Baylor/Texas Children's Hospital invite for the peds psych rotation, but has anyone heard from Baylor on the DePelchin Children's Center-Child/Family Psychology Track??

Thanks!

Interview question---is it necessary/advisable to bring copies of your CV to these interviews, or is it safe to assume they have? On a 'normal' interview I would totally do so, but wondering if that is the etiquette with this kind?

I did last year, based on recs from multiple sources. No one ever asked for one, but pretty much every applicant had them. I plan on doing it again this year -- I wouldn't want to give the impression of being unprepared.

I have been told to bring CVs since the faculty members interviewing you may not necessarily have been the ones who reviewed your application materials.

I agree. I think that's also what the APAGS internship workbook recommends

Interview extended by phone from Access Institute in San Francisco, rejection email from Marin HHS. Access interviews are happening right now, though mine isn't until the 17th of December. Haven't heard from any other places yet! Hang in there everyone.

Invite for SUNY Upstate Child & Adolescent Track, received just now, via "dear applicant" email. 🙂 Interview dates offered:

Wednesday 12/11
Thursday 12/12
Thursday 1/2
Wednesday 1/8
Thursday 1/9
Wednesday 1/15
Thursday 1/16
Wednesday 1/22
Thursday 1/23

Was concerned I wouldn't hear from them, as they had notified their adult track a week or so ago. Yay!

Oh -- I also received a phone call this morning from UBC/Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, Child Therapeutic Day School Track & Adolescent School Based Track. Only one date offered: 12/19. Eek, so soon!

I got a Brown invite this morning too! YAY!! Mass email, Child Track, and interview dates are January 3, 6, 8, 14, and 16.
Has anyone heard back from Brown to confirm the interview date? I've been holding my 3 preferred dates since yesterday morning, and I'm wondering if anyone has already heard back. Thanks!

I haven't heard back either. It's driving me nuts!! Hopefully we'll hear soon :-/

Thanks!
I applied to that track as well, and I haven't heard anything. I do know though that the Baylor's Psychiatry dept internship (where the DePelchin track is housed) is completely separate from the Baylor/TCH internship (this one is housed in the pediatrics dept at Baylor). So I don't think there would be any relationship between the interview/invite processes at these two internship sites.

At the beginning of each interview I would walk in and say something like, "Hi there, my name is XX XX [offer to shake hands] I'm from XX, its so nice to meet you." The interviewer says something generic and you respond accordingly and then hold out your CV and say, "Here is an updated copy of my CV. I wanted to make sure you had a copy before we get started"

You might even practice this so you figure out how to do it without it being awkward.

Between the period of time when I submitted my applications and the actual interviews some things on my CV had made forward progress (i.e., I think a manuscript had been accepted and I think I submitted another for publication) and I wanted to make sure I gently pointed this out. All but one of the interviewers at various sites responded with some degree of excitement and either reviewed my updated CV or simply asked what had changed. One person declined my offer and stated that she had already reviewed your CV earlier that day.

For those of you applying to academy sites or sites that really emphasize research, I would encourage you to think about how you can show forward movement on your CV. Can you push out another paper that is already close to being finished? Can you gently ask your mentor if the two of you can find a time to work on the manuscript that needs to be revised and resubmitted so that it is back under review, or possibly accepted, by the time you interview. You never know what could move you up a notch or two.

Finally received a rejection from UCSF yesterday (pretty sure I was wait-listed). C'est la vie - probably would not have gone to the interview even if offered at this point.

Seems like my sites are pretty on top of this...heard from 11 out of 16 thus far!

Do you mind sharing if you applied to the Topeka or Leavenworth track? And congrats!

Has anyone heard from the Palo Alto VA? They start interviewing in two weeks!!

Generic e-mail from Florida Dept. of Corrections saying they received application materials and will be reviewing in the next 2 weeks. They will notify before Dec. 14.

I'm getting antsy over here! So far I've heard from 3 of 17 sites (they've all been interviews, thank God!) but I just want to know what dates to block off and where to look for lodging and flights! Anyone else in this boat? I've applied to all forensic sites (mostly BOP and state hospitals).
