2013-2014 APPIC (internship) interview thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Mass email invitation from Tulane School of Medicine (Child Track - Infant Mental Health Concentration) today. Interview dates are January 3, 10, 17, 24, 31.

In other news, it looks like both Allegheny General Hospital and CHOP have sent out both invites and rejections, and I've still heard nothing from either place. Anyone else out there still waiting on those, too?
Also still waiting on Allegheny

So I came to a realization today. Depression and anxiety are the two most common presenting problems for psychologists. So obviously DCTs and TDs came up with this process so all future psychologists could have first-hand knowledge of these very common problems. It's all clear now!

I'm so confused. Is the thinking behind this that by thanking someone you are telling them you are not as interested in their site? Or maybe it's like interviewing for a job. I can't think of anytime when I've interviewed for a job and then sent the interviewer/company a thank you. I'm a fan of common courtesy so this perplexes me.
While an internship IS a job interview, the Match process is unique in that multiple interviews and hundreds of candidates are presenting simultaneously. I think training programs probably adopt a "lets all just say skip them" is a practical decision (and unrelated to the common courtesy of a thank you note in other situations for a gift or a single job interview.) Here are the practical reasons NOT to "accept" or at least to not expect them from a site's perspective: time spent opening/filing/distributing them at an already hectic time, fact that candidates send notes which risk violating Match policy and swearing everything but their unrequited love for a site and then demonstrably have not ranked them highly on Match day so this calls all subsequent years thank you note texts into question, costs and time associated with sending them are one more burden on students and/or favor those privileged with the resources and training to send them, they definitely can be perceived as an attempt to influence the outcome, and paper waste. I think they usually get opened and read, maybe filed with an application but often not now that these are electronic. I do not think the practice is "held against" anyone generally--but if a site specifically discourages them than it may be wise to demonstrate that you follow directions.

Rejection BRAINS consortium. Personalized email. Gosh this process is terrible...7 rejections, 0 interviews, waiting on 6. Let's pray the rest of the week offers a silver lining. Still smiling 🙂

Love your attitude! Sending positive vibes your way!

Ball State UCC invite via e-mail .
2 responses in day ....

I posted this before, but I guess the server ate it: Thank you all so much for your well wishes! I really, really appreciate it!

Not as much news as I expected to see today--I'm guessing people'll get a lot of news on Thursday, Friday, and Monday?

Still waiting on 5 sites, but I think I know the deal with 2 of them. Getting anxious about the other 3:
-Has anyone heard from MUSC or the Salem VA recently? I know they have done rolling invites, most recently around 12/3, but I'm wondering if they are still sending them out, or if I missed the boat
-Has anyone heard from the VA in Augusta, Maine (sometimes called TOGUS)? I know in the past their invites have gone out pretty late, but again, figured I would check with ya'll.

Good vibes to everyone!!! 😀

Interview at Crossroads @ Pennsylvania Counseling Services. Dates January 8, 21, 29, morning or early afternoon. Personalized.

Did more folks get that email from UC Davis UCC about budget cuts?

Yep, just got that. Interesting that they would offer an interview to someone and send out rejections, and then send out this email. Super confusing...

I thought they hadn't offered any interviews? It says again in the email that they will be letting us know on the 20th.. I think you might be thinking of the UC Davis CAARE center instead of the UCC?

Ah, you're totally right, my mistake. I apologize for the confusion. Did they send out UC Davis UCC rejections already?

Received an e-mail rejection from University of San Francisco CAPS at 8:53pm 🙁

I don't think so, it sounds like they'll let us know either way on the 20th. Guess they really want to test our anxiety level haha

I am ALSO confused about the UC Davis CAPS email from the TD. Does this mean we need to choose different emphasis if we chose the MIP? But my cover letter focused on why I would be great for that emphasis....

Oh no! So sorry!!!
it's ok I'm starting to become jaded after getting rejected by almost all my fave sites in one day. BOOOO this process does suck. One day we will all think of a way to make it better for students! Because I wouldn't subject anyone to this ever if I had the choice!

but anyways on a more positive note, thank you for your kind words! haha i need to get out of my negative lens and let it go.

It looks like you can email to clarify? I think it might help if you can clarify how you're still interested in doing multicultural work, but with a more clinical emphasis like the email says. It might also help to talk about another emphasis that you think you'd be interested in doing too. I talked about MIP in my cover letter too, but I also talked about another emphasis, so I guess that means I'm only being considered for the other emphasis now.

Yeah I have a similar issue with my cover letter there. I imagine they'll have to be more understanding of that in terms of assessing fit. I am happy though that I don't need to think about it at all until the 20th now, for sure.

Good luck Futureappypsy2!! For all you have done for us… best wishes seem so simple. Please know we are immensely grateful for your unselfish and unbelievable dedication and support as we go through all of this! Sending you the best that can be sent your way! Let us know and we will celebrate with you:clap:

I applied to TOGUS and I haven't heard anything either!

Yeah, I rechecked the training manual and couldn't find anything about the Undocumented Students area. Strange

From my understanding the school has a lot of undocumented students. Students that are not American citizen and does not have legal documents. I think this is my understanding and that emphasis might consist of working with those students and maybe some outreach/projects? Not sure...would be a great question for her.

Received this e-mail also... they are also ending the research project. As I understood it, the MIP will not be available to interns at all, not even the more clinical-focused, this upcoming year... it's not clear to me how they wish to handle those of us who applied for the MIP. I wish we would have known before November 1st.

Also, I do not believe UC Davis UCC has sent out any rejections or invitations at all.. I think everything has come from UC Davis CAARE.

Gotta love the 11pm rejections! Tulane school of medicine peds psych track via email unpersonalized.

Yep. Nothing from UC Davis UCC yet.

On another note, does anyone know anything about the status of things at the Illinois School Psych consortium?

Yes - this is a common phrase in California, and will be an important issue in any multiculturally-oriented internship. Generally means latino immigrants who do not have legal status. They can be deported if authorities find out. Many undocumented students have lived in the US for most of their lives, yet are shut out of many opportunities - they are not eligible for a lot of financial aid, employment, etc.
