2013-2014 Harvard Application Thread

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh II!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Congrats dude!!! I'm rooting for you. Totally living vicariously through you lol
I thought about sending an in the area email here when I got my interview to BU, but after searching around on here and getting advice from a few others, I decided not to. Harvard's general response to in the area emails seems to be something like "If you are invited to an interivew, we will do our best to accommodate you" -- and I didn't find anything in past forums where applicant's had any luck. Anyways, I decided to wait it out, and just yesterday I was offered an interview! They were accomodating and allowed me to schedule my interview for the same week I'll be in Boston for my BU interview. Hope it works out the same for you! 🙂
I emailed them about an "in the area" and got a similar response with near identical wording. Some schools are more flexible with that than others, but it's always worth the shot if your finances/time is limited. I certainly wish I had more of either 😛
Sooo Harvard Med sent me this letter today asking me to apply to their school I am a URM. Apparently they have access to my MCAT scores and told me I fell into their range of ppl who were accepted. Does anybody know anything about this letter?
If you have above a 28 or 29 MCAT or higher and are URM they will send you a paper letter or an email telling you to apply. Like many schools, this is to increase their pool of potential candidates and is not a direct reflection on whether you actually stand a chance.
I received that letter the other day as well and I had already applied 6 weeks ago so it shows how much attention they are actually paying to the people they send the letters.
Honestly the letter is a blanket letter to anyone who meets a certain threshold I guess on med mar.
I still added Harvard on my amcas though.
Quick question.... I'm already verified and I was wondering how long it takes them to send you the secondary. I'm gonna start working on it but I was curious about that.

See my post above...I responded to the first time you asked this.
Thanks for responding. Didn't mean to double post.

Woo! Congrats to everyone who's gotten IIs here so far 🙂.
For those of you who have interviewed, what's the day been like? Interviewing soon and would like to get a sense before I go.

Best. handle. ever. 👍👍👍👍👍
From my understanding, you just have to submit the AMCAS application by the deadline. It doesn't matter how long it takes to get verified. So I submitted my AMCAS application at the end of August and I'm still not verified yet. What if I don't get verified until after October 22nd. Does that mean I can't submit a secondary application?

Isn't that cruel?
LETTER FROM HARVARD MEDIC....oh they just want my money 🙄
Submitted the secondary today! (Completed the optional essay)
This is a reach for me but why not. Hoping for an interview.
Good luck everyone!

This may be a silly question, but people I work with who did grad school or post-docs here are questioning why I'm not applying (decided not to submit secondary). I just feel like, with a 36 and <3.3 GPA, it's pretty pointless (regardless of excellent extracurriculars and post-grad experiences). Can anyone weigh in on whether or not I am justified in thinking this?

Yeah <3.3 is almost definitely below pre-screen levels. 10th percentile is 3.71, so screening thresholds are probably way higher than 3.3

On the secondary, where it asks "Are your parents/guardians Harvard Medical School alumni or faculty members?" would it be prudent to mention that one of my grandparents graduated from HMS? Or should I just answer it as it relates only to my parents?
INVITED TO INTERVIEW AT HARVARD!!!! Can't believe it!!! Especially as a Canadian! Thank god they don't do rolling admission though cause I won't be back from Africa until early December. Just so excited!!
Congrats! I've interviewed here already as a Canadian and loved it. They have a few Canadian students who I had an opportunity to talk to. Enjoy your day!

Congratulations to you too! Great to hear you had a positive experience and had a chance to speak with other Canadians. How was the interview? Did you have a chance to sit in on any of the classes?

I have one also: an interview invite!!
I really want to be accepted into Harvard medical school!!

And an attending? Lol.
Hey guys,
I am finally getting time to work on the Harvard Secondary after Canadian apps are done.
I wanted to ask what the difference is between the HST and New Pathway tracks? I just want to apply to regular M.D. track but apart from that the application asks to choose between HST and New Pathway. Is one more difficult than the other or more competitive?
Any insight will be appreciated.
Thank you.

Nice! Fingers crossed here.Rejected by HST🙁((( But invite for NP.
Also, I wanted to ask those of you who have already graduated a question.
Did you guys simply list the activities you're involved in since graduation or did you describe them briefly as well?
I wrote my response in the form of a full coherent essay where I brought up my post-graduation activities and described them as I thought necessary. For example, shadowing only needed a couple sentences to list and describe what I got out of it while a publication got a paragraph about the experience.
