2013-2014 Harvard Application Thread

Now that we are a mere 2 weeks away from decisions, I'm wondering what an applicant's chances of ultimately being accepted would be if s/he were waitlisted. Anyone know how waitlisted applicants have fared in the past?

I'm curious as well. Although, I don't imagine the chances are very high. I'd be willing to bet Harvard has possibly the lowest waitlist movement of any school which really sucks. BUT, I DO know of a number of people who turned down Harvard for other top schools, so there is certainly a chance!
 
I've read on previous year's threads that your chances are actually decently good. However, due to this it seems that waitlist spots aren't given out to many people.
 
I was told by students at the interview that Harvard only waitlists a relatively small number of people, and those on it should definitely not lose hope.

I don't know for sure, but I believe this is correct.

Yes, but I don't have the data on how many - it's not something that has ever really come up. The only person I know of freely said so. When we get here, it's all exactly the same.
 
Harvard Medical School has scheduled Revisit 2014 to begin on Thursday April 10th, with formal activities running through late Friday evening, and student-led activities planned for Saturday, April 12th.

After admission decisions are sent out, in early March 2014, all admitted students will receive more information about Revisit! Good luck to everyone - I know the wait is killer! Keep your spirits up!

I've heard that Harvard and Johns Hopkins often have their revisit weekends on the same days. This post just proved that statement true (at least for this year). Why is that? I would think both schools realize that most students accepted to one school are probably also considering the other - the two are arguably the most elite medical institutions in the country. Why force applicants to make such a big decision prematurely?

Side note: I don't think anyone fortunate enough to have this problem would mind that one bit (I know I sure wouldn't) hahahah. Just a thought though.
 
Also, Stanford's revisit weekend is April 10-12 and UCSD April 11-12. And I think Duke's is April 10-13.
 
Are u kidding me? Hopkins, Harvard, Stanford, and Duke all have second looks at the same time. That's a huge dilemma. What are people going to do?
 
Granted in not in Harvard yet (duh) Fingers crossed and praying it happens. Regardless, I think ppl will have to make hard decisions.

It wasn't that hard. I scheduled revisits for the early acceptances. The late non-rolling schools know that many won't be able to attend their revisits.

Okay, so you're saying this is something that schools anticipate will happen and some will accommodate individual revisits? Thanks for your input.

I was in the same boat last year and chose to attend the HMS revisit. I don't know if schools are trying to compete with their peers, but I wouldn't put it past them! Traditionally, HMS has had a very high yield - close to 75%, meaning that about 75% of those offered admission choose to attend HMS in the end. This yield rate is on the higher end of the spectrum.

It is sometimes possible to "split" revisit weekends, but then you'd have to choose which one to attend first... This is especially difficult given that most revisit activities are front loaded. First world problems, probably need to use their superior analyticaly skills to solve the dilemma. Don't think the outcome of their education will suffer in the least at any of these fine institutions.
 
I talked to some other people I know that are in Hopkins and Stanford. We agreed to go to Harvard if we get in because we really didn't get a good feel for the school on the interview. Those that interviewed knows that it's a pretty hands off day. Ok, I'm not talking anymore about this until after April 3rd (knocks on wood).

Either you have a ton of extremely smart and wonderful friends or I smell a troll.

I met a lot of smart and wonderful people on the interview trail. I know three people that got into these schools outside myself. Two applied to both Stanford and Hopkins and got in and one only applied to Hopkins and got in. When you go on interviews at places like Brown, Sinai, Hopkins, UMich etc. you meet really smart people and the chances are some of them will get in to these schools.

I am assuming you interviewed at Harvard. Haven't you or some of your friends got into pretty competitive programs? Its funny that a person that probably has an amazing resume and application that interviewed at Harvard and got into amazing schools would call someone else with a similar background and record a troll.
 
I've interviewed at Harvard and it went extremely well, but I'm not holding my breathe. Have gotten waitlisted at vandy and Pitt, so this schools seems out of reach especially considering that my vandy and Pitt interviews also went very well. Still, weirder things have happened!

It's the casual way you say you know multiple people that got into both Hopkins AND Stanford that is trollish. Most students would kill for a chance at one of those schools and the way your talking about it comes across as "yeah me and everyone I know got in." I understand that's not your intent, just how I see it.
 
I only know three people out of the dozens of people that I have met at interviews at similar places. We're on the Harvard thread, what do you expect? Look at the medical students that post on here and give amazing constructive advice. They got into multiple schools and they know multiple people that got into these and other schools. Its not a bad thing to ask for help. Just because getting into these schools is difficult doesn't mean I should be embarrassed to ask questions on the Harvard thread on an anonymous forum.

I am sorry to offend you to such an extent. I think my response stems from the region I am from, as it is considered pretty taboo/rude to talk about acceptances and interviews at my school except with close friends and those not in the process. From this, you may understand why I didn't really inquire at interviews about where other people had been accepted as I personally think its inappropriate and can psych people out, and was skeptical of your post. I met a lot of incredible people at the schools I went to, but at somewhere like Harvard, its a crapshoot. So, good luck everybody! For my own sanity, I'm not going to look at this until this is all over 🙂

Land of casseroles?? I'm from the Midwest and that is definitely not how I'd describe the region! I guess it's an interesting take haha but I like to think there's more to us than that 🙂

I am also from the Midwest, but I think the "land of casseroles" is an excellent and appropriate description of the region... At least my sub-region of the Midwest.
 
Yeah, I agree about the attending Harvard second look if I got in sentiment. Its the only one of the schools I've been at where I didn't get a good feel for things.

Counting down the days till March 3rd. I hate that I really have no clue how this will go. I'll be praying for good news all this week though!

Also, do we know for a fact that decisions will be released on the 3rd?

I think it's based on past years, where it's always the first Monday of March. I may be wrong, though.
 
Will we be notified by email or phone call?
 
I saw a few questions about sending in updates...I just sent one in on the 20th. I got a prompt email back in which it was obvious that Joanne had read the letter and she mentioned she would update my file. It's not too late 🙂
