2013-2014 Panic Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I have the funds to reapply, but this will be my third time. Sighhh. I'm just tired. 🙁 This is going to be a third personal statement and I have to ask my professors for rec letters.. Again! Embarrassing. Smh. It's that mcat that's holding me back. I need to kick that mcat's butt next time.

I wish this was like college football, where you can eventually play against all these schools that didn't want you and show them what a mistake they made.

I guess I'll just have to be a really good doctor for reasons other than vengeance and spite :/

Thinking about going on a short backpacking trip to a foreign country in mid-March when all three of my post-interview decisions are going to be released. If I get anything, it will make it even sweeter. If not, at least I will still have something to focus my minds on instead. Not sure if this is a good idea though, suggestions anyone? (e.g. if they will call me instead of email...etc)

If you're worried about phone calls you could arrange to have calls forwarded to a family member/friend? Or get a temporary international data plan that will allow you to check your mail. But I wouldn't worry too much - even a lot of remote towns/villages still have internet cafes here and there that would allow you to check up on your status every few days if need be.

Just submitted my application to my alma mater's BME program; looks like it'll be the class of 2020 for me. How do they expect us to hold off on making any plans for the future when we may not even get any interviews?? It's a sadistic process.

2 rejections this morning; 4 in the last week.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!
I have a feeling more are coming, and this is making me very stressed/unproductive at work.

🙁

End of January, still no new IIs. Trying to stay positive, but ugh, so difficult to do.

I've been in a depressed funk all this month. Thinking of all the opportunities I gave up to be Pre-Med, what uncertainty lies ahead, and sad at the bigger salaries my friends are going to be making this year and beyond while I slave away to improving my applications if it comes down to that 🙁

Please God, I don't want to reapply...

Is there a thread of successful waitlist stories out there in SDN? I need.. hope... haha

Someone a little ways back in this thread said they were without an acceptance in May and it came down to them choosing between two schools that accepted them off the waitlists.

To those without IIs, one first year student at my last interview said he didn't get an II until APRIL. It was his only one, he was waitlisted, and in June, he was accepted!

There is hope! Stay positive, everyone!

After months of silence. I get an e-mail from Georgetown that they've reached a pre-interview decision on my app. I proceeded to try to log into their application portal, only to have forgotten my password since it's been 5 months since I submitted my application. After resetting my password to look at their decision, it's a nonchalant REJECTION. Hahaha can't believe the effort I had to go to read that status when it could have very easily been through email.

UCSF does a similar thing, delivering the rejection in a PDF file which you have to download from their web site.
At this point, I have figured out that any email mentioning a decision is a rejection.

At least they had a nice looking rejection letter... 😕

You can't even use chrome to open it either!

So I'm still sitting on 9 schools that haven't sent me a rejection or II yet. Why, AdCom, why...

This is the best advice! I know it's hard to not panic. When people told me that on last year's panic thread, I remember shoving it off and thinking how easy it is for them to tell others not to panic when they aren't worrying themselves. But, it'll work out one way or another. There is still time to receive interviews and get off waitlists. I didn't have an interview until the middle of January or an acceptance until the middle of May, but I got to choose my medical school. The best thing that I can recommend is to try to find something to focus on, but plan for the future. When I was accepted, I was about to register for an MCAT retake and I had my app all ready for next year. Oh and if you're on a waitlist, send update letters!

Wanted to throw a thank you out there to people for ranting/sharing in this thread. It's helpful. Attempts to talk about this process to non applicants is like discussing politics with goldfish.

All my friends said I was overreacting when I started freaking out that I had no IIs in December. None are pre-med.

5 interviews, 2 post-interview rejections, 1 waitlist today, and 1 deferral until March. It's been 6 months of holding my breath and my nerves are totally shot. I have NO IDEA what to do. My numbers and ECs were all solid and I didn't think for a second that I'd be sitting at the end of the season without any acceptances in hand. Do I hang on for the rest of the season? Prepare a second application? SMP? Change careers? I don't even know what I can do to improve my application, as my undergrad GPA and lack of published research were the only holes in my CV.

**** IT

Two more rejections today. Losing hope. I have one waitlist to pray for but even that's pretty dismal. Second time applying. I don't even know what to do anymore. 🙁

If you want to be a doctor, don't quit. Definitely hang on for the rest of the season; you never know if you'll get more interviews or acceptance off the waitlist. If you don't have anything come April or May, I'd prepare the re-app. Did you apply early enough? Broadly enough?

I haven't been on SDN for months so I would be sane. 1 acceptance to a DO school, 2 rejections from georgetown and GW. Still waiting on 8 MD schools. Updates letters sent in early Jan. Starting to become neurotic again.

I got two on Friday, too. Hang in there - for all you know, you're #1 on the wait list and will be accepted 4/1. If you read through the old threads, there was one year where that school actually called through the ENTIRE wait list and was about to accept people who they had already rejected! Tell me that isn't a story full of amazing hope. It helped me feel way better.

Thanks for the support! It really made my day. Definitely needed to hear something, anything, positive.

Lol who would want to go there

Still no interviews and no activity at 14 schools 🙁

I honestly don't know what I could have done to make my application any better 🙁 34 MCAT and 3.6 GPA and all the other EC's and yada yada yada...

Do you guys feel that this is the hardest cycle up to date, considering it's the highest number of total applicants? Also, do you think schools would interview more students given the increased number of applicants, or still the same given their limited number of seats?

I'm assuming the latter, but there's always wishful thinking! So many obstacles in this cycle, plus AMCAS verification was delayed.

I'm glad this thread exists to keep me sane. Kind of sane anyways haha

From what I've read, it doesn't look like many schools are increasing their number of acceptances (some said they will in 2018-19), so with more applicants competing for the same number of spots, I think it's definitely more difficult to be accepted.

I read somewhere (probably on here, so take this with a grain of salt) that only around 17k/year get in. With 50k+ applying this year, that's only a little more than a third.

I feel like I got lost in the shuffle...Submitted all secondaries by July, one interview in Sept and waitlist...absolutely nothing since. Stats are competitive for all my schools, most of which are IS.

Is this Pitt? And they went through an entire WL? 😵

aamc table 4 says 19.5k in 2012, so more like 20k this year and 47-48k apps

Not Pitt, and I'm not sure how accurate the info was. Thanks for clearing up that other information! 41.6% is better than 34% 😉

Complete in August Got 5 IIs but 2 post-interview rejections, 1 waitlist, still waiting to hear back from 2 others.. So depressed 🙁 Really have no clue about what I should do now. Can't figure out any backup plans.

Don't know what's wrong. Anyone with 3.9/36 without any acceptances so far?

I have 3.9/38 with no acceptances yet. It's still early.

3.9/36? wow... did you apply late or something? With those numbers, interview invites should be flowing your way

Really? I was under the impression that we were getting down to the wire here. Based on last year's threads, it looks like IIs may go out for another month or two, at best.

I have similar numbers and zero acceptances. Already gearing up to reapply.

Well the previous poster had 5 IIs and still hasn't heard from 2 of those schools. I don't know how many schools he/she hasn't heard from pre-interview, but I just got an II a week ago.

I'm not saying that either of us will definitely get in, but we are in a lot better of a position than many other applicants who got 0-2 IIs. 🙂

I agree that it is not early. Some schools are completely done with interviews, and others have just a few dates left. How many are still actively handing out "II"s in any appreciable numbers is unknown to me, but I doubt many schools are in that category.

I think in terms of IIs, it's almost over, but getting acceptances.. maybe not so much.

So far I applied to 19, and got 5 IIs, 1 Pre-interview hold, 7 pre-interview rejections, still waiting from 6 others.

I did not mean that it is early for IIs. The original poster already has 5 IIs. It is still early to give up on this cycle. 🙂
