2013-2014 Panic Thread

I am freaking out right now. I am still waiting on one letter writer. She said she would have it in in May. I emailed her in June and she said she would get it in. Then in July she said she would get it in on Monday...that was a month ago. Now for last 10 days I haven't been able to get a hold of her. BLAHHH. I have all these secondaries to submit but can't get reviewed until it is in!!

Now that I have vented I feel a little better.

Just got verified last week, and of course never got around to prewriting. So I'm writing secondaries. Churning them out like a mofo. They sound so sappy. Like, sweet jesus. So sappy. And they're all blurring together. Did I use "truly" or "hopefully" too many times in my essays for this school or not at all yet? Why on earth did I pick this school again--did they have the learning communities or was it the other school?
I've fallen in love with every school I've written about, like some sort of premed floozy.


I'm losing all respect I had for myself as a writer, as it all sounds the same. It's like the farting Twilight series, "I love Edward. I love Edward. Edward is so beautiful. I love Edward." But replace "Edward" with [medical school]. Times twenty.

God help us all.
 
I have fallen in love with all the schools I've applied to because they all teach medicine.

Not sure that's an acceptable response on a secondary.

I'm still prewriting but I feel like I'm falling in love with each school too. Sigh.

Did you know the twilight novels actually began as a hastily written secondary application? Later edited to add vampires and a slightly less sappy love triangle. Totally true, saw it on 4chan

You don't wanna know. I found out that two of my letters are unsigned and it's been eating at me for weeks. Why would you not sign a letter? :lame:

But yeah, I would rather opt for blissful ignorance. 🙂

edit: that feel when you see fb pictures of your old classmates attending their medical school orientations

This is why I made every effort to not discuss anything involving medical school with any of my peers this summer. It's just tough. Also, that feel when you're at another grueling day of your gap year job and you think, "this wasn't part of the plan..." 🙁

But we're all gonna make it, each and every one of us. Last year just wasn't our year.

THIS. At this point a school goes up a million points in my estimation when they have a question on their secondary which I've already answered for another school. "Great, you want to know how I'm diverse!!!"
 
I feel like giving gifts to all the schools whose secondaries have no essays (or at most, an additional info essay). I've only submitted 15 secondaries during week 1, and I have 20 more to do before hitting that 2-week deadline :scared:

I'm getting concerned about not having any interview invites. I was verified on 8/7, sent 11 secondaries on 8/8 and the remaining 12 on 8/13 with a few last week (Drexel and WF). At some schools they haven't marked my application complete (NYMC, Albany and UVM), but at others I've been complete for 2.5-3 weeks.

I guess what worries me is that some people on here have upwards of 5-6, even 7 II's already, and the only activity in my direction is a LOR request from Mayo and the receipt of two secondaries from schools that screen.

Anyone feeling the same way right now? Or is it a bit premature to be worrying at this point?

premature but totally understandable. I've learned that applying to med school is just about the worst thing you can do for your self esteem haha but you really haven't been complete very long, I wouldn't worry about it. They will come!
 
Worried about IIs, I finished roughly all of my applications around the middle-end of July and have 3.9 + 40 mcat, yet most of the schools I applied to have already started giving out interviews and many people complete after me are getting invites. If people after you are getting invites and its been about a month since you were complete, is it time to give up hope? Just feels like it is unlikely schools come back to people complete in July as the cycle progresses.

It is not time to give up hope until you get a straight up rejection! This is probably not how it goes at all but I tell the following to myself to make me feel better: at each school there are several app readers who are each given a stack of applications when they have read their last stack. Your adcom is probably just a little behind 😳

I like to imagine a frazzled gray-crazy-haired professor with coffee stains everywhere and an office full of scattered papers, trying to piece together paper application pages that flew apart based on their AMCAS numbers at the top :laugh:

Hey guys, think of it this way; by this time next year you won't even remember panicking about acceptances.

I can say this much: my gap year definitely has helped with coursework, even though I thought it was a waste of time until about a week ago.

It's OK. I just got rejected from a Princeton Review job to teach MCAT. The reason? I failed the qualifying exam (yea...out of all things). I took the MCAT less than 4 months ago and got a 13 on the section I applied to teach, but I've already forgotten A LOT 👎 Welp



What's also sad is my concept of money now. I always compare everything to the cost of secondaries. I bought a $100 concert ticket the other day and didn't even think twice about it. My thought process? "It's only the price of one secondary; I'm turning in $3,000 secondaries, so what harm is another $100 gonna do?"

I was rejected by McDonalds, Burger King, Wendy's, the Cheesecake Factory, Macy's, and JC Penney's. I didn't even think it was possible to be rejected by McDonald's. :laugh:

You'd be surprised, I was rejected at every fast food place I applied to as well back when I was graduating. I don't know why I put in my resume for those places, it was obvious that they realized I was overqualified (that's what I told myself too 😛 . Money is money though.

I am late. Horribly, horribly late. People are talking about attending interviews and I just barely submitted my application. I don't even have a good reason to be that tardy. Now all I can do is sit and nibble my nails, waiting to get verified. :scared::scared::scared:

I am with you milski. It's one of the worst places to be and there is not much you can do to make yourself feel better. Best thing to do in my opinion is to prewrite secondaries and avoid almost all SDN threads 😛

Why would you drop the ball so hard after spending so much time studying for the MCAT and presumably doing very well on it?

I have not posted a thing or even checked my private messages since AMCAS opened for submissions. 😳

Yes, I think I'll be ready with all the secondaries by the time I get verified. Polishing the PS turned out to take longer than I expected and finding silly typos and mistakes after a full week of re-reading and editing just sucked. Anyway, that's behind me, best of luck to all of us.
