2013-2014 Panic Thread

Complete at most schools in mid-July. Two IIs - one rejection and still waiting to hear back from the other. Not terribly optimistic about my outlook right now. Preparing to reapply, but the thought of rewriting a dozen secondary essays and my personal statement is just painful...

EXACT same spot... Complete July with two interviews, one rejection, and one unknown. Best of luck to you! I agree that reapplying does not sound appealing at the moment.

Where did you guys interview at, just out of curiosity?

Complete mid October at most schools due to having to retake the MCATs (still didn't crack 30 but I'll take my 28) and just dead silence. Its excruciatingly long process and I'm sure most schools haven't even looked at my applications yet due to the back up with AMCAS. Even with all this rationalizing I have done, I'm still going crazy.

I'm in the same boat you are in! hahahaha hang in there buddy.

John - thanks for the response. Good to hear that I'm not alone. Perhaps there's still hope for the both of us!

Wonton - I interviewed at U of NM (state school) and one of the mid-tier East Coast schools.

Hey Bill,

Sorry to hear about how your cycle is going right now. I hope there's a school out there that can appreciate how kind you are toward others, and can appreciate the rest of your application. I'll be rooting/hoping for you for the remainder of the cycle. Good luck!

The dead silence is a blessing in disguise. I have received 5 rejections since last Wednesday. Now I'm terrified of seeing anything from an .edu address in my inbox.🤔

Thanks very much for the kind words, Pyrrion. I think I really underestimated the amount of research and clinical experience that most med schools are looking for these days. Hopefully I still have a shot this cycle, but there is plenty of room for improvement if I do need to reapply.

Looks like you're going to have to make some tough choices in coming months! I can't imagine how you'll go about choosing which school to attend, but San Diego would love to have you!

Best,
Bill

I didn't think I would end up posting here, but sitting here having only had 1 interview, 4 rejections, and silence from the 12 other schools I applied to is looking pretty bad now.

I have seen quite a few posts on SDN saying that by this time most schools have given out almost all of their IIs, so it is looking like I will need to reapply, but barring getting into some major research I can't see how I can improve my application except maybe some more shadowing and volunteering.

35P, 3.54cGPA (3.99 for the past 4 years, it is just dragged down by 5 F's from 2004), 3.99BCPM, 150hrs volunteering, ~20 hours shadowing across a few specialties, TA for 2 classes, 2 semesters of research, multiple awards/honors, and an RA.

My one interview seemed to go very well, and it was at a school in a tie for my top choice, so that is good, but my whole future seems to ride on the outcome of one interview. Given how hard I worked for all those A's (no filler/fluff classes) and that MCAT score, it is very disheartening.

When were you complete? If it was Octoberish, your still fine. If you were complete early with only 1 ii then you might be introuble.

I think you still have time. Last year I was complete early october and only got 1/4 interview invites before the new year

Hopefully. At least I got that one interview at a school I really like and the interviewers were mostly very friendly (MMI style and most of them kept talking to me past the official time allowed).

Is it too late to apply to DO schools as well for this cycle? For them, my cGPA will be 3.99 and sGPA will also be 3.99, so I should be highly competitive there.

It is not too late. Generally the DO cycle lasts longer than the MD cycle. Just be sure to check the individual dates for each school before you waste $ applying. I think a lot of the deadlines for the primary are in January if I'm not mistaken.

Awesome.

As to the money, I am almost totally broke(my two jobs do not pay me in dollars) and too old for my mother's income to count(at least for financial aid purposes my EFC is $0), so I will probably be eligible for the fee waiver.

This is not true. I received half of my II's past this date. Have some schools given out more than half of their II's by now? Possibly. Have they given out almost all? Not likely, certainly not the majority of schools.

I thought it was easier to get an interview at state schools. Anyone else finding it harder to get an IN state interview over OOS interviews ?

For me, it was much easier getting in-state interviews. 6 of my 8 were in-state.

I'm from Florida which has many state schools and so far have been getting the cold shoulder from all my state schools, aside from 1 . I feel so bad for one of my other friends who only could afford to apply to state schools and had 31+ Mcat and 3.85+ GPA ( URM ) and good EC's and still only got called to interview at one school.

complete late july up til mid august, no II.
now i find myself grumbling at the people who are panicking about being complete in october

but i know its the same panic for everyone

I feel like I'm going to go insane waiting. This frantic checking of email must get under control.

OMG totally feel you... We need to hear back about II's! Come on Med Schools, show us panicking peeps some love! Apparently, complaining on this thread is supposed to bring good luck.

Not even kidding I got 2 calls from random states I applied to within 10 minutes of each other and they were both from telemarketers .... Of course in my head I thought they were II's and I jumped out of my seat both times lol. I'm thinking about putting my number on the do not call list.

I watch SDN to remind myself to be patient.

There are many many people in the same boat.

Haha. I had a telemarketer call from a "blocked" number today. I thought the same as you... then I realized that schools probably wouldn't block their phone number. 😕

Anyone else not looking forward to having to talk about med school applications with our families over the holidays?? 😛
Haha... for me, it's talking to my girlfriend's family that I'm not looking forward to! She went to Harvard, so they're going to want to know why I'm not accepted at HMS... They're rather demanding. They said "well, if you want to stay around Boston, why don't you just go to Harvard?"

... I didn't tell them that I never applied.

Hate when people ask me what I'm doing. Feel like I've explained it like 5385693465928753 times already. -_- When I know, the world will know because I'll be shouting it from the rooftops! But until then...lol.

Haha, too funny . You could have applied to Howard and just mumbled...

I am pretty much losing all hope right now. I have two rejections and just got put on hold at Drexel (aka rejected). I have interview at my state school but have not heard from any other schools. I have a 3.8/33 with pretty solid ECs considering I worked through out school to pay for tuition and living expenses. My biggest concern is that my IA is severely holding me back. If this is the case, there is nothing I can do to improve my app for next year. My IA is really stupid, I wasn't even the one that got in trouble.

I do not know what to do.

What I hate even more than questions is the assumption that 'you will get in somewhere fantastic.' Clearly they have not met all you other brilliant people who are applying for medical school and are not familiar with the terrible odds.

I find this kind of support drives me actually nuts.

Yup. When I told my parents about my rejections from mannnnnnnnnnny places they just told me I was "too good for them". I wanted to tell them, "The joke's on you... because I might not even get in anywhere!" 🤣

Has anyone gotten an II after 5 ET? It's been a love-hate relationship with Outlook these past few months and we might be due for a temporary break.. At least till the next day.

Both of mine were relatively early morning (one Monday, one Thursday). I've seen some people get them on weekends or in the middle of the night (somehow?), buttttttt ... I would say to take a break. :zombie:

Every interview invite that I have received came before noon. However, some schools are renowned for releasing decisions at strange hours. Case Western Reserve University displays status changes the night before an email is sent at 3 AM; Vanderbilt University has a tab that turns green if you've made it to the next stage of processing; Mayo Medical School sends out interview invites and rejections on the weekends at around 1:30 AM; Jefferson Medical College (can) display status changes later at night; and Virginia Tech Carilion sometimes sends interview invites at the end of the day. I'm certain there are others, but these are the schools with which I have personal experience.

I think some schools use systems that send out decisions at specified hours, whereas others simply "click enter" manually.

I wish schools just all sent out email acceptances and rejections and waitlists, etc.

Has anybody ever worked with a doctor that has made you rethink being a doctor? Not enough to change, but to at least reconsider it?

No. However, I have worked with doctors that should be ashamed of the way the act, and make me embarrassed for the profession. It's just not becoming to act like you're always right. Speaking from my own experiences working in the Emergency Department, I don't care if you're an M.D., Ph.D. from HMS... the ED could, and does, run just fine without you. Acting like you know everything just makes people angry and wastes time and money. Don't order tests that aren't necessary. Talk to nurses, talk to radiology, ... don't assume you know more than everyone else, because many of the hardworking staff you're alienating have worked for decades and have a lot more knowledge in their area of expertise than you ever will.

So, I've worked with dip****s, but nobody who's actually changed my mind about wanting to be a doctor. 😉
