2013-2014 Panic Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Oh dang - I did that. Definitely wasn't trying to complain. I'm happy that I got my one interview.....just full of panic due to the wait. I will send lots of prayers and good vibes your way!
haha no worries! we can all worry together 🙂 I hope you will(or did) rock your interview and that an acceptance has your name on it!!!

Checked my Penn status page just now and found this message:

"The Committee on Admissions reviewed your application but has not invited you for an interview at this time. Additional reviews will occur and any change in your status will be communicated to you."

The only thing worse than hope is not having a PS4.

I got put on hold at Penn too -_-
Stings!
Rkearl27 knows that people have been getting pre-interview holds for the past few weeks but still frantically logs onto penn's secondary portal because her status might have changed in the last five hours since she checked it.....
Isn't this just so much fun??

have had 4 II. Went to 3, two are non-rolling (i.e.- the long wait until next spring), 1 that I was really psyched on put on the wait list (which for OOS student supposedly doesn't have any movement- ie- drawn out rejection). Next interview up is for another non-rolling school, which means I will still not get to know if/where I got into until early to late spring.

i suppose its all relative though. to those who have had even less luck so far this cycle hopefully you'll get a early christmas present or two and some new years luck.

Probably more silence for me =P although I do have an interview to attend this upcoming weekend! Hope I do well and get accepted lol

Good luck! I do too so I should really stop fretting and focus. But it's so hard. I feel for the people who have been complete since June. I can't imagine 6 months of this torture.

Best of luck this week/month everyone! To those without ii, I hope there are some thrown your way.

To me, I hope I hear back from few places I sent LOI's to and interviewed at.

To give some hope, we are only half way into this monstrosity (considering application season from Sep - Mar)!:shrug::bang::help::smack::poke:

Hope or further agony? 😏

I can tell from my status bar whether or not I received a new email but I keep entering my Gmail app and refreshing anyway. 🙁 How are you guys holding up?

I'm actually considering retaking the MCAT.

I've been considering it too! I want to retake my 31, but I don't want to take it without proper time to study for it 🙁 and confident I can score 34+.

Unfortunately, I work 60 hours a week sooooo studying is a problem until I figure out what I'm doing next year (med school or post bacc)...

Sigh. Too much time on my hands to fret.

And not well. I go 3 hours without checking my email and then remember and then excitedly check and then see nothing and then despair.

Or I see updates from the NYT or Washington Post and want to kill everyone haha. Day one million and one...

I got mail from a school! It's from Boston, but unfortunately it's a rejection 🙁

Dear God. Now I'm hoping my email doesn't make a peep. *E-condolences*

But schools aren't done yet. So keep the faith.

You don't think that the top 10 percent of applicants get 90 percent of the interview spots do you?
Of course they don't. If that was true and 40% of the applicants are accepted, that would mean that 30% of them get 10% of the interview spots. Assuming that all of these get only one II, you have the top 10% getting 27 interview spots each, which is, mildly put, bogus. 😛

Wow, that's a really specific thought. I was thinking that Boston gets 12,000+ applications and I highly doubt I'll be one of the lucky few. But thanks for believing in me. 🙂 (I'm unequivocally one of the 90%)

You know I have not really thought about that but that is a good point. People who apply to a ton of schools AND are really competitive really eat up a lot of interview spots at schools they will never attend. I guess it has to be that way though, just like schools want to interview us, applicants want to check out schools. Still, it might make everyone's life easier if AMCAS limited the number of schools someone could apply to down to 15 or 20.

I see this as a never ending cycle. You HAVE to apply to 15+ schools because everyone does. Which means schools are seeing a ton more applicants than those that share interest. Which means you can't just apply to the school you're interested in because they are getting so many more applicants, which means you need to apply to more schools, making it worse. But it is definitely a buyers market for AMCAS, and if people are willing to pay to apply to 20 schools that's a lot more money for them.

This is so true. So USNWR says that students on average apply to 14.3 medical schools and AMCAS is reporting about 45,000 applications per year these days. By my count that means AMCAS is making $ 26,505,000 off of applications. I wonder how much of this is profit?

Considering the only real costly part for them is approving the primary (which they do only once) and collecting the recommendations to send out to school (which is really easy considering that everything is electronic), they have to profiting so much from people applying to so many schools. I was extremely fortunate to get the Fee Waiver, but I know of plenty of people who paid out of pocket for all of their schools they applied, and those surcharges certainly rack up fast. But, I may be grumpy at them knowing that they charge an arm and leg for applications and for the MCATs and yet it took them 8 weeks to approve my application, and it still takes them 35 days to release your MCAT score.

Hey guys, I have been lurking in this thread for quite awhile, and I thought I would share something that might give some people a little hope. ECU posted today that they have only given out 42 of the 120-135 offers they usually make. Since we are only halfway through interview season (and if we assume most schools have given out a similar proportion of their total offers), that means that there are still plenty of offers to be made. Hang in there, everyone!

Texas applicant here.

Did TMDSAS, SUPER EARY submission (5/9), secondaries all done by mid-June. So far only one interview (TCOM), zero rejections.

The suspense is killing me!

I think this varies wildly by school, with some almost full (e.g., Michigan), and some like ECU still with plenty of spots! It's nice to hear some concrete examples of schools that aren't nearly done.

Even though I didn't apply there, it is reassuring as someone with 0 interviews that some schools are not dwindling to the end of their invites

Kinda preparing for the worst at this point. I applied to 13 schools, and have been complete at all of them since mid October. Since then, I have received 3 II's, 2 of which resulted in my being placed on the waitlist after what I thought were good interviews. I still have one more interview next week at the school of my dreams, and am really hoping I have better luck this time around. They do say the third time's the charm! haha. Anyway, rejected from 1 school, and placed on hold at another, and have heard nothing from the other 8 I applied to. To be completely honest, my application was not that strong and I really regret the way I went about this process. Praying for a female interviewer at my next interview! They are usually more responsive to me than dudes lol. :/

Just feeling really insecure about my interview skills. I thought they were pretty good, especially since I'm an excellent communicator, but I don't know. All I know is this process really f**king sucks.

I was complete mid-October also and in the past 4 days, received two invites for January. That means February and March are still available. It is not over yet.

Practice interviewing in front of a mirror - pull questions from SDN's Interview Feedback and practice answering them to yourself. It would be better to practice with a friend/co-worker/supervisor, but depending on your circumstances mirror-selfies might be the best. I'm rooting for you!

Eizeral,
You should really keep a positive attitude during your next interview! If you did get an interview, especially at your dream school, then your application is strong, now you just need to charm your interviewer (whether it be a man or a woman). Just try to view it as an adventure and have fun. Have you done any mock interviews?

At this point I am just very thankful for the opportunity and plan on giving it my all. And no, unfortunately I never got the chance to have a mock interview, however; I plan on having friends and coworkers help me with that.

Thanks guys, I appreciate your support and feedback. I'll do my best to come back with good news next Wednesday 🙂

That's a good idea! But make sure that friends/co-workers are critical enough to give you honest feedback (both about some weaknesses that they've noticed, and some strengths). The mirror practicing (as uncomfortable as it may be) could also be very helpful 🙂. Best of luck, tell us how it goes! 🙂

The best advice I ever got for interviews was to act like I already had the position. Not in a "I'm such hot poop" way, but more like "This is just a formality, and I'm stupid stoked about the future." Hopefully that helps a little too.

another pre interview hold today (loyola)
still no II
life sucks

Complete since late august/early September, rejected from 4, no words from the rest of 9. Trying to remember to be patient...

To combat my obsession with my Gmail account, I started forwarding my email to one co-worker friend and handing my phone to a second co-worker friend.

The lengths one takes to stay sane.

I would love to get an interview invite any time now. That would be so so so splendid.

To those of you with upcoming interviews, try recording audio of yourself (either in front of the mirror or while talking to someone). Then you can listen to it later and self-evaluate.

I hate the sound of my own voice though :/

Currently riding 4 waitlists, with one rejection, and two decisions (rejections) still pending. Clearly, I am the world's most average applicant, soon to be lost to my own mediocrity.

No interviews scheduled. Should be hearing back from one of my three (very thankful) in exactly a week. Hoping for more love though cuz I'm not very hopeful.
