2013 - 2014 Psychology PhD/PsyD Interview Invite thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just got an email from Case Western that my application is now "complete." Since everything was received there near the end of November, I'd say there's a bit of a back log and interview invites are a ways out. Just an FYI.

Someone posted on gradcafe that they got interviews for SUNY-binghampton and U of Alabama-Tuscaloosa, any chance you could message me more information about how the invites came and who their POIs are?

University of Nebraska-Lincoln sent an e-mail saying that my status went to "Reviewed" and is awaiting final evaluation from the Graduate Chair.

University of Iowa, Counseling Psychology
Interview Date: 2/7/14
Notified: 1/8
Notified by POI

School Name: University of Memphis
Date Interview Invite Received: 1/8/14
Degree: PhD
Type: Clinical
Track: Psychotherapy Research
Notified via: Email
From: POI
Interview Date: Phone Interview 1/10/14
Additional Info: Phone interview with POI to narrow down pool of applicants, but still very excited since this is high up on my list.

I emailed the admissions coordinator at Nebraska-Lincoln. She stated that all interviews have been extended and she plans to inform all applicants of their admission statuses by the start of next week. I think that if you haven't received an invite that the likelihood looks like you won't... 🙁

On "thegradcafe.com" it states that somebody received a pre-interview phone call, which does not guarantee an in-person interview, from the University of Miami. My question is if schools that do those pre-interview phone calls, call every applicant they are considering to interview in person? Or are some applicants directly invited to the interview without being called and having to do a pre-screening interview (this question is purely regarding schools that do those pre-screening interviews)?

Thank you!

"All applicants invited for an interview will be notified on January 17, 2014. Some faculty may contact applicants informally before this date to ask questions regarding the application. Being contacted, or not contacted by a faculty member for such an informal discussion does not signal who will be invited for a formal interview."

I was excited about this one but found out my POI is not taking a student after all : (

Yes. It has recently been changed. At application time the POI was taking I student and I verified that. I called in the hope that it was a mistake. Wasn't. The website listing is now current according to department.

This happened to me two times last year! But in those instances at least the POI had the courtesy to email me.

I feel like they should refund when this decision was made after application deadline : (

I've already got a scheduling conflict on January 31. Nebraska contacted me a few weeks ago and I accepted their interview offer. They offered a skype interview on the 27th, but I am afraid that I lose any chance at Nebraska if I cancel the campus visit. Similarly, I don't see Oregon being the type of place that will admit someone who doesn't show up to the interview.

It is SO frustrating when they don't post whether or not they are accepting a student!
I emailed most of my POI's when I was applying but sometimes they don't get back to you and that does stink🙁 I am sorry🙁

University of Miami
Received email from POI for preliminary Skype interview, said actual interviews are in February

Who is your POI? If you don't mind me asking.

Which program was this for? I see a bunch of people received information that all interviews were extended via email. However today I received the alert that my app had been reviewed and is awaiting the graduate coordinator's decision (I stated this above). Seems like mixed signals.

That happened to me a few years back. Don't get your hopes up, the sorry you have great qualifications but we got a lot of applicants email is on it's way. Took them a week to send it to me last time

Schools know there will be conflicts. As stressful as this is for us as applicants, it is a regular occurrence in this process. Contact one (or both) schools to see if you can schedule an alternative date for an in person interview. Several people on the board have done this in the past and some schools will set up a day for an individual 'interview day'. I know I have also seen people mention that they have attended the interview for the school they preferred or the school they RSVPd to first.

Good luck and I hope you are able to get it all worked out!

Why not asking them directly if they are going to take a new student for a given academic year. Even the way they respond to this question and possibly some followup correspondence gives further information if it is a really right program for us.

I spoke to every POI I applied to to make sure they were taking students and discuss fit for lab. Unfortunately, sometimes their status changes after you have applied.

Does anyone know whether all of the Temple University Clinical Psychology PhD invites are out at this point? And good luck everyone, what a painful process this is!

Ah I see. As in the final decision will come soon... as in no interview. Tricky and cruel, UNL.

Just a guess - but I really don't think so (or maybe I am just very optimistic!). It seems like Temple is doing invites based on POI (based on PMs that I have had with everyone who got an interview - ei, the people who got an interview the same day had the same POI!). In the past, Temple interviews were spread out over a few weeks, so I think there is still hope!

I's is SO frustrating when things like this happen :boom:. Since I also wanted to apply to Penn State but when contacted three of my POIs, two of them told they didn't have a plan to take a new student and one of them who I am really appreciative told me that I am not a good fit for the lab, if you don't mind PM the name of your POI.

Has anyone heard yet from Northern Illinois clinical psychology Ph.D. program? I saw on grad cafe that someone had.

I received an interview invite without pre-screening, from a school that somebody posted on gradcafe they had a pre-screening interview with. The interview invite came a few weeks after I saw it posted. So it does happen, apparently. I think some programs do pre-screening interviews for all candidates and some are POI (or applicant) specific. No idea what U Miami does specifically. Good luck.

It was for the clinical psychology Ph.D. When the admission coordinator said "All invitations have been extended" AND "All applicants will be notified of their statuses within the next week" it felt like mixed signals to me as well so I responded and said, "So if I have not received an invitation at this time I will not be receiving one, correct?" to which she responded "most likely not."

While not totally Clinical PhD. Has anyone heard from CUNY Health Psychology and Clinical Science Ph.D? I believe interviews went out around this time last year.

Not sure if this will be helpful but I just wanted to let those who are interviewing at Texas A&M for clinical know that 20 people were invited for 5-6 spots, good luck to those of you interviewing next week!

Thanks.

I've received the same email, today.

A final decision has been made and forwarded to Graduate Studies. You should receive a follow-up message from the department or Graduate Studies soon.

It is SO frustrating when they don't post whether or not they are accepting a student!

There's WAY more to taking a student than just deciding to take one. Many of these factors are not knowable at the application deadline. No faculty want to string along students, but it's impossible to say for sure whether we're taking someone (or several people) or not.

I'm the one who posted before! I just answered my own question. In case anyone else applied here:

School Name: CUNY
Date Interview Invite Received: 1/9/14

No travel expenses covered but committee will work to schedule a phone/Skype/Facetime interview if you can't make it

Got the following response from UNT Counseling Psychology (I contacted them about the interview date as I am buying a ticket for another interview in Texas and wanted to save $$)

"The Counseling Psychology Department has set aside February 7, 2014 for their interview date. Final selections have not been made yet but if you are chosen candidate then you should be contacted in the next 3 weeks or so."
Ok so we will hear within the next few weeks then? Thanks!

I wasn't referring to Penn State but rather POI at UNC no longer accepting a student. Sorry.

I received an unofficial invitation from UT-Knoxville's school psychology program today (via phone call from program director), so I expect the official invitations will be coming soon.

I just had a Skype interview for there, and my POI said he was skyping people he was interested in, and would extend an actual interview to 3 of those and accept 2.
