2013 - 2014 Psychology PhD/PsyD Interview Invite thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I applied to Vanderbilt and haven't heard anything. Judging by hummingbird12's experience, I have a feeling I'll ultimately receive a rejection.

Anyone else going through the stages of grief? My internal dialogue is going something like this: "No way they sent out all of the invites, I bet my POI hasn't yet... Maybe my email account sorted it as spam? I should check with the department... Ok, I didn't get in, but WHATEVER who wants to live there, anyway?!... *crying* Why didn't they like me?..."
Definite grieving going on. Geez, if i don't get in anywhere this year, I'm not sure I could go through this whole process again. It's insane. And it also makes me want to read the personal statements of those who are getting so many interviews. I can't imagine where else my application is lacking? Other than I didn't go to a big name university or work with a big name PI so far...

Don't give up hope yet. But I was where you were last year. Many many people don't get in the first try. You have to persevere. I have to believe institutions do respect that.

Aww, thanks Phd hopeful! Yes, I'm sure I'll end up applying again. I don't think I've ever wanted anything so badly in my whole life. Good luck to you : )

Was that the PsyD program? And if so, would you mind telling me if you emailed them to ask and then got the rejection, or did they send you the rejection unsolicited? Sorry for being crazy, it's just my top choice, and I haven't heard from them…

And my condolences to you, of course!
No problem! I applied to the child/ad psyD program. I haven't emailed them- they contact me out of he blue. And thank you, but I'm not sad. I'm almost positive i'll be hearing good news from Antioch, and I thought they were a better fit for me. Good luck! Crossing my fingers for you!

That a girl! And it's not over yet! So many schools still haven't finished. Hope one of yours is in the category. It only takes one!

I feel so similarly! Hopefully this doesn't sound arrogant, but I really did/do think I have a strong application--I've been reading this forum for about 5 years (early college days), and I thought I crossed all my t's and dotted all the i's. Welp, I suppose the results speak for themselves. Like you said, how are we supposed to know what went wrong? I think I might consider consulting the various programs that reject me, I know people have done that in the past and gotten useful feedback from POIs.

To everyone that's going through several rejections, I know exactly what it feels like. Most people I talk to don't get in on their first try. I didn't. And now I've gotten two interviews so far and I still need to receive official word from 9 schools. Don't give up. The year off of school to build your cv helps a lot. It's also so much better to apply when you're not in school anymore. It's way less stressful. Don't give up hope! I used to think taking a year off was awful, but it turned out to be a blessing in disguise 🙂

I went through this process 2 years ago and now I'm applying again as a much stronger applicant. Having experienced quite a bit of rejection during round 1 - I understand the frustration.

However, I chose to look at it differently: not that I was lacking, but that other applicants were obviously stronger. Having a big name university or PI is not always the answer.

Sometimes it's not just the personal statement, but how you approached research, what you can add to the team, or where your strengths are ...etc. - sometimes it's little things that can only be deciphered by those making the decisions (e.g., my UG was not in psychology and they thought it would be a detriment for me in a psych-based PhD program because I did not elaborate on how my UG major would be a benefit to me in my personal statement...even after 2 years of post-bach work and research in psychology that included publishing in a peer-reviewed journal!).

I did get great feedback after my first attempt - and it helped me to know where to put my energy these past few years.

Best wishes to you during this wild ride,
AB

I will continue the support! DO NOT GIVE UP! This is an incredibly hard and anxiety provoking process that doesn't always work out the first time. If it doesn't work out this year use the rejection to fuel your desire to get in next year! Last year I did not apply to enough programs and pigeon holed myself a bit by being too specific about my research interests. Despite being a strong applicant, I got no interviews (one wait list for an interview) because of this and because of just how competitive these programs are. I used the rejection to really think about the type of mentor I want to work with and used the extra year to publish publish publish. Last year no interviews, this year 8 so far.... So keep trying and if this year doesn't work out there is always next year!

Wow! Congratulations!!! You are a great example for those struggling this year. I too didn't get any interviews last year much to my surprise and great disappointment but this year I got published and it seems to have made the difference. Thanks for sharing and good luck.

I feel the same! This is the first year that I am applying for PhD and for an international student, it's really overwhelming. I've received one rejection, was put on a wait list, but haven't got any interviews and since interviews have already gone out from some schools I've applied to, I'm expecting more rejections. I've been reading the replies to definitely try again, but what to do to improve? I have a two-year volunteer experience and a couple of publications and one presentation, my GPA sucks though. I also work full-time, and taking the risk and quitting my job is not what I would like to do. 🙁

I went through the process twice myself; it can be tough, but I definitely felt more confident and at-ease the second time around, so it's not all bad (after the initial disappointment, which surprisingly didn't last very long).

That being said, the personal statement can have a LOT of swing at some programs, and it's an area that I feel some folks (not necessarily anyone here, mind you) overlook and/or just "mail it in" on when preparing their applications. It's entirely anecdotal, but my advisor explicitly told me a few years after I'd started grad school that my personal statement was essentially the entire reason he'd opted to interview me.

Someone posted on Grad Cafe that they were notified of interview on January 2nd for PsyD but that is the only one.

I'm seeing a couple posts for Duke's program on Grad Cafe. Is anyone willing to claim those? Thank you!
If no one answers just remember a lot of people go on Grad Cafe and not here (and the other way around).

I applied to SUNY Stony Brook (Clinical PhD)-- I had a phone interview in late Dec. and received an invitation (by email) to the campus interview last week. POI's are extending invites individually so it may be possible for you to still receive an invitation! Feel free to PM me for POI information

I see, thanks for replying. When did you submit your application. I submitted towards the end...

I'm trying not to freak out too much! This wait is torture!!! Please let me know if you know anything and I'll do the same!

I emailed hartford. they are finishing up their reviews but haven't sent all invitations yet.

I just e-mailed them too. Hopefully I will get invited..fingers crossed. I did my MA there and I really liked it 🙂

watch a TV series, bake, go for a run...sigh I need to finish a paper but I am clearly procrastinating and freaking out.

I have a question about invitations to interview. If a school invites you for an in-person interview, do they usually accept you afterward, assuming you don't do anything terrible during your visit? Or do schools still reject a lot of the applicants after in-person interviews?

Ditto. Received phone in late December and invite by email last week. I submitted in late November. I think it's by POI rather than application receipt date.

A lot of POI's use phone interviews to weed out people as they can only invite so many to the interview. I can't say its 50/50 or anything like that. I had phone interviews last year and didn't get invited for interview and this year I have. For in-person, they invite more than they accept. Top schools invite less because they assume a larger percentage will accept. Smaller schools tend to invite more. So NO, not everyone is accepted after in-person.

It's still entirely possible. In-person interviews are also about personality fit within the lab/department. Someone doesn't need to make a huge social blunder to not get accepted. I interviewed at one University where I was one of 36 candidates vying for 6 or 7 spots.

Typically, you should definitely not assume you are already good to go because you received an in-person interview. But, as with everything else, it's going to be specific to the program. The easiest was to tell is by looking at two factors: how many applicants they invited to interview, and if they utilize a waiting list. Most PIs are only trying to take on 1 or 2 students a year (I'm talking about clinical PhD programs here). If a PI invites 5 people to interview, she/he is not likely to extend offers to all 5 (you can also ask how many students they plan on accepting...). Let's say the PI really only wants to have one new graduate student this year- here's where the waiting list becomes a factor. If the program has a waiting list, the PI will probably only make 1 offer, and let 2 of the other 4 know they are on the waiting list. Then if offer one is rejected, they can move on to the next. However, if the program doesn't have a waiting list, then the PI may make 2 or even 3 offers, and just live with it if both/all end up accepting.

Best.

Thank you for the input Lisa and Phdhopeful. So it sounds like the battle is not over until you get an offer. Such a strenuous process!
