2013 - 2014 Psychology PhD/PsyD Interview Invite thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hi everyone, I hate to vent or rant, but this is my first time applying to clinical psych programs, and I'm a bit anxious about results. I applied to 11 different schools, got an interview for one, and rejected from three already. The rest of the schools, I haven't received anything from them, but according to this thread, interviews for a majority of my schools have already been sent out. I know I should be grateful for my one interview, but it kind of sucks to think that I have no backup or that the other apps were for nil. I'm just wondering if interviews may still go out, or are they mostly done.
I got rejected (still stings a bit) from: UCSD/SDSU, Washington U in St. Louis, and Northwestern U (Feinberg)
I haven't heard back from: Drexel, UT Austin, UT Houston, UCinccinnati, Penn State University (University Park), Boston University, University of Georgia.

Does anyone have any info on these schools? Most of them, it seems that ppl have already heard back from super early, but are there chances that there may be a "second" round or still potential candidates?
Sorry to rant, good luck everyone!

And I guess here is my one school that I got an interview for. Don't get me wrong, I'm thrilled and excited and grateful!

I am sorry to hear this but do dwell on the gratitude! Many people did not get a single one. Chances of a "second" round at these schools is not likely I am sorry to say. Are you checking Grad Cafe? You can usually get a very good idea from there. I believe most of the schools you have listed are done with clinical psych. Not sure about Cincinnati though or Texas. If the interviews are right around the corner, that gives an indication as well.

Got an Adelphi interview today so it seems like at least the first mass email that went out yesterday wasnt the only one.

Penn State's interview is this weekend, so unfortunately that is probably out, UT Austin is also coming up quickly. Those are some very, very competitive programs on your list, due to location or reputation or both; that may have presented a challenge. But UConn is a great program with an excellent reputation (imho) so if you're only going to get one, that is a nice one to get; knock it out of the park.

It sounds like Drexel got a TON of applications this year. I got an email from my POI that while I had a strong application, they needed to see more authorship on publications and presentations.
So don't be too discouraged - it's just REALLY, out-of-the-water competitive this year. IMHO.
+pity+

Got an Adelphi interview today! Yay!
Does anyone know why they have two rounds of extending invitations? Does that mean something?
Also, why did some people receive the option of the 2 different days? My interview is for 2/12. Is there a difference between first and second-day interviews?

I am with you on this one as well. I have one interview. I'm starting to believe that maybe it's best if I do this all again next year. It's definitely not ideal, but unless everything about the program is something you love, you shouldn't rush into it. People in programs or with more experience applying may have more educated responses, as you can't bank with 100% certainty on getting more interview invites next year, and you certainly shouldn't throw away an interview/invite without good reason, but I really am starting to see this app season as a testing ground for myself as an applicant. I spoke to a POI and am waiting for a response about what I was missing in my apps, but while an interview is great and something to be proud of, I don't think you should take an offer simply because it's all you got (not implying that you are). Obviously this process is part luck/skill and seems to be at times, a total crapshoot, but if you got an interview, you're doing SOMETHING right. If you really put in the time, do some insight, and speak to the POI's that rejected you, you may understand better why you were invited to your one school and not the others. If you develop these missing gaps that may have led to rejections and emphasize the strengths that may have gotten you an invite to the school, you may have a lot better app season next year. This isn't to discredit the sting, because personally I feel disrespected after all the money, time, and anxiety spent applying, my schools didn't even have the decency to let me know my status via e-mail or their sites. However, we *future* psychologists need to reappraise the situation. We want this bad, and we will get it. It just might take some time. I really wish you the best of luck and want you to know that you are not alone in feeling this way.

I'm pretty sure U Cincinnati has NOT sent out any interviews yet--I know that their program sends them a little later than most. Be proud of your interview, and best of luck on hearing from the rest!

I did see one Cincinnati post in TGC Results Search that came by phone (and had zero other information). Fingers crossed that it was just one overenthusiastic POI and that the rest of our invitations are coming soon! 🙄

First off, congrats on receiving an interview! That's one more than many people have. Unfortunately University of Georgia's sole interview day was last Friday. Just remember that it is still early in the process!

Smart if you're worried about settling for an inferior program with a bad fit - but didn't you already weed those out before you applied? I'm wondering why you (or anyone) might have applied to a program you didn't really want to attend.

Unfortunately, the department has stated to many on Grad Cafe that all invites have been extended. Sorry.

Ditto! UCONN is a great program. Give it all you've got! But most importantly, BE YOURSELF! Don't give "pat" answers. Talk about your research passions!

My lab mate applied to University of Minnesota. Had what he thinks was a great phone interview. He's freaking because he is seeing rejections on Grad Cafe but his app status is "still under consideration". Anyone have any intel? He's not on the forum. Help me help him LOLOLOL They clearly let people know through their application website so he's logging in every 5 minutes. There was an acceptance via phone reported on Grad Cafe yesterday but no other info.

I am in the same boat. I had a really good phone interview with the poi who emailed about the interview to someone else and have not received a rejection or interview on the website (also checking every 5 minutes), so maybe they just didnt get around to all the interviews today, or rejections(hopefully the first).

I work at the University of Minnesota under a faculty member in the Clinical Science department. I can tell you that everything they do is very much on the POI's schedule and very sporadic. They're not organized and don't follow a certain formula like other programs and they don't go through a single admissions director. I would take it as a good sign that your friend wasn't rejected straight up. I wouldn't be surprised if they dragged out interview invites over a few days. Hope this helps.

Sorry I meant orientation invites

Smart if you're worried about settling for an inferior program with a bad fit - but didn't you already weed those out before you applied? I'm wondering why you (or anyone) might have applied to a program you didn't really want to attend.

I don't fully understand this myself, but a lot of people seem to apply to programs they don't want to go to. Sort of curious what the thinking is on this.

I'll admit I applied to 2 programs out of 13 where I probably wouldn't be happy, but for interpersonal reasons it kind of made sense, I did it because of pre-existing relationships (but I kind of wish I had the wasted time/money back now). One of them lost a transcript and I didn't bother to fix it, and the other one conducted a phone interview with me and I think came to the conclusion that it was not a good fit.

In the time after I finished my applications, I discovered some things about one of my programs that make it a poor fit for me. So even though I tried to meticulously research the programs I applied to, I did still end up with one program that I would be unlikely to attend. It happens.

Yeah, this was also the case for one of the two I mentioned; I had a chance to visit the area and see the school, and, well... I am sure some people are very happy there but it's not for me. I also had one that I withdrew from applying to at the last moment because I suddenly realized I had missed an important detail about their training that was listed on their website somewhere that made it a poor match for me. But some people seem to apply to 50% schools that they want to attend, and 50% schools they don't want to attend; that is a thing I don't totally understand.

To respond to your and HappyPhDHopeful's post - I never said I applied to a program I didn't want to attend. My point was when you only hear back from one school, it might be easy to feel trapped and feel like it's your only option and better than waiting for next year.

I am sorry, I did not mean this about you personally, although I did read a little bit of that into your post, I guess I was wrong. I know other people who have applied to schools they knew they did not want to attend, gone on those interviews, and passed down all opportunities to apply another year. In the end it seems to work out for most of them, they eventually wound up in a good environment, but it's a little confusing to me why they bothered applying in the first place (and spent the money on the visit and so on....). But this is a difficult process for everybody and I shouldn't judge.

I have an interview that's conflicting with the interview day on the 10th! I'm glad I'm not the only that's going to ask for the second day! I guess I'll see you there 🙂

Does anyone know if all invites of UMass Boston have been send out?

Does anyone want to claim the U Albany clinical invite posts on TGC?

Did anyone else receive a rejection notice in their application for UNC-Chapel Hill? Or rather, not receive one or an interview invite either? I saw some people posted rejections via website on TGC but when I checked the website there was no decision notification. Maybe they mean the notice on the UNC website that states all applicants have already been invited?

That is how some schools notify. They just post on their website and this lets you know you were not selected. Sorry!

With all these rejections swirling around, what's the protocol for contacting schools about improving an application for next year? Is it bad form to email them and ask what can be worked on to be more competitive next year?

ps = feel free to bump this to an appropriate thread if this is not the right spot

From everything I've read and been told, yes, it is bad form.

There's something else I want to add about this (not to the poster specifically, but this thread in general). This is the first time you are going through this process. It will NOT be the last for people who are admitted. You will have to apply for practica. You will have to apply for internship (which in my own experience is 1000x more emotionally devastating and anxiety-provoking than grad apps were). You will have to apply for post-docs. You will have to apply for jobs. You will get rejected a lot throughout the course of your career.

What I'm saying is, if you find this absolutely unbearable, you will either need to get used to it or maybe consider a different career path. And I'm not saying this to imply that this process doesn't suck or that none of you are tough enough for this field. I'm saying this because it is something I wish I had known back when I applied to clinical psych programs.

Has anyone heard from:
Teacher's College Counseling
George Washington Clinical PsyD
HGSE Masters program
Boston University Counseling Masters

Thank you!

No - I have not heard from TC counseling either. Hang in there!

I'm saying this because it is something I wish I had known back when I applied to clinical psych programs.[/quote]
Do you mean if you had known all these drawbacks, you would have chosen another field?

I don't think I would have chosen another field*, but I wish I'd known because it would have prepared me more emotionally. Also, I am happy with the program I ended up at, but I do think that our fervent desire to get admitted sometimes makes us overlook things about programs that might be problematic in the long term (APA match rates, lack of good practica sites, lack of funding, research fit and productivity, etc). Remember, it may feel entirely one-sided, but you are evaluating programs just as much as they are evaluating you.

*I may feel differently about my choice to enter this field after Feb 21 😉
