2013-2014 Wayne State University Application Thread

Question to any current medical students/fellow applicants:

For question #2, I have a good response for Prompt A. (Why WSUSOM). It says that non-residents must answer this prompt but MI residents may answer any of the three. This may sound foolish but, to me, this implies that as a resident I should do Prompts B or C (I don't even know how to explain my my logic for why this is 😳 ). Both B and C are nice prompts but I feel I have written great responses to them in my personal statement and most meaningful experiences section. I know it's "allowed" for me to answer prompt A as a MI resident, but would this be a good idea given my situation? What does Team SDN think?

I definitely didn't it read it as us Michigan residents being limited to questions 2 and 3. I'm leaning toward three because it wouldn't require writing a new essay (recycling, ftw) but I also feel like it might be halfhearted to NOT boast a bit about their school... Like I should write on "Why WSU?"

Keep in mind, the ethical question was asked to find out about you. Sure, there are right and wrong answers but, in my opinion, it's best to put your best foot forward and say what you believe based on your experiences-But what if I violate a rule? The rule is a technicality that may or may not be place when you begin practicing. Context has been limited purposefully. Use that to your advantage. This isn't the place to regurgitate concepts from medical ethics/bioethics unless you fundamentally believe they tie into a sincere answer.

Answer the one you want to. When they explicitly state you can answer any of the three, they won't "mark you down" for choosing a particular one of them.

Called adcom today and she said OOS should receive secondaries sometime this week. 🙂

Sent my secondary and photo through via email yesterday. Has anyone else submitted? Do they give any sort of indication that they've received it?

anybody else still waiting on this secondary that isnt OOS?

I received a confirmation receipt , shortly after submitting.

I agree, MI residents get a choice of 3, but nothing restricts you from writing on "why Wayne?" I would choose question 1 if you have some really good reasons and Wayne is one of your top choices. If you dont have anything good to say, pick question 2 or 3.

Yep, I'm IS and still haven't received this secondary. They're probably just processing the secondary invitations slower than expected. I'm sure we'll get one soon.

I submitted the secondary 8/4 and have not received a confirmation.

Just to add to this (I'm a 4th year), especially for those who are out of state, the Detroit Bankruptcy is definitely NOT something that should have an impact on whether or not you come to Wayne. Major city services are not affected and Wayne is chartered under the state constitution so it isn't at all a part of this whole thing. While there has been some declining state support and main campus raised tuition by 9.7%, tuition at the med school did NOT increase. The shortfall was made up by money from the school of medicine physician group and other places. The only real impact of the declining funding we've seen is that they fired two of the -ahem- less effective members of the administration.

I have lived in both the suburbs and Midtown (where I am now) and can say that living down here is great compared to the suburbs. Especially around Midtown occupancy is very high, tons of new restaurants/shops are opening, there are several new housing developments either under construction or in the works that will be around when you guys start, etc. If anything, bankruptcy is paving the way for more development as people like Dan Gilbert et. al. can buy whatever the hell they want at absurdly low prices. Midtown is also patrolled by a separate WSU police force that has I think a 90 second response time so it is completely different than the 45 minute public service nightmares around the less central areas (ie not Midtown, Downtown, or Corktown) of the city.

Of course, there are plenty of reasons for and against Wayne as a med school (feel free to PM me for more) but bankruptcy and the location really aren't big issues. I'm not a complete starry-eyed evangelist but the WSU/downtown/corktown areas have changed significantly even since I started 3 years ago and I'm sure that trajectory will continue when you guys make it down here.

Thanks for your detailed reply, themockjock. This is good information.

Anyone else still waiting for a confirmation email after submitting (emailing) the secondary? Submitted 7/28 and still no response

Yes, submitted 8/4 and no confirmation as of yet. They're probably taking a long time because it needs to be done manually.

IS here, still waiting for a secondary. Verified 7/29. Did those who got the secondary get an email beforehand saying that they were being reviewed? Just wondering if I should send an email to make sure they have my application.

I'm IS too. I got an email from Wayne State on 7/17 thanking me for my AMCAS app and explaining they screen for secondaries. That was the day after my AMCAS was verified, I think. Then I received the secondary two weeks later, on 8/1.

Wait, sorry, my AMCAS was verified 6/17 and I got the initial email from Wayne on 7/17, so it actually took a whole month til I heard anything. Then I got the secondary two weeks later.

Hey all,

I interviewed and was ultimately accepted here last year. For any who are interested, I wrote about the experience here. Good luck!

Hey everyone, finally got confirmation for submission of my secondary application and am now complete. I submitted my secondary 8/4.

Congrats. What time did you submit on 8/4? I submitted around 9 PM and still have not received a confirmation email.

has anyone OOS received a secondary? I haven't gotten one yet. does this mean I was rejected?

I submitted on 8/4 as well, but have not received confirmation yet. Think it's a good idea to email or call the admissions office to see if something went wrong with my submission?

Congrats? Haha! I want an interview at this point, haha. In seriousness, I think you shod wait until Wednesday and then call to confirm. It seems all over the place. Some people were confined shortly after submission and others took longer like me.

I am OOS and also have not received a secondary. I am pretty sure that my stats are sufficient assuming that the secondary screen is purely based on numbers.

I don't think so; I'm oos too and haven't received it.

Edit: scratch that. Just received : )

Still no secondary...

Any idea when Wayne is going to start sending out interview invites this year?

Same here...except I'm IS..

Have you gotten the confirmation that they are looking over your application to decide whether they want to send you a secondary?

my primary app was complete and verified on July 26th and Wayne emailed me saying they have everything and will decide whether I should get a secondary on July 31st. I'm IS and my numbers should not have me screened out. I'm not too worried, just surprised it's taking so long.

Got my secondary today. Maybe they're reading this thread...

Anyone have any stats on # of applicants, # of secondaries sent, # of interview invites, # accepted and waitlisted (preferably divided by IS and OOS)?

Thanks!

Interview info is in the MSAR.

As for secondaries sent, i'd suspect that 95%+ of apps get one because Wayne screens for apps below 3.0/24.

This has number of offers and stuff:

Thanks for the link. However, your take on the secondaries is not correct. Wayne State may auto screen at 3.0/24 but they conduct a holistic evaluation of applicants before seconding secondaries (and I was told by an admissions counselor that only about 1200 secondaries total are sent). Hence, I was trying to gather some data to figure out the ratios of ii/secondary invites and acceptances/II for OOS applicants specifically.

Don't mean to sound rude, just wanted to clarify. 🙂

That makes sense. That's pretty impressive then - if there's only 1200 secondaries sent then you have nearly a 2/3 chance of getting an interview.

You're note rude, 3rdLevel was just speculating.

I think you are correct about the pre-secondary review not just being 3.0/24. According to last year's threads, several were rejected pre-secondary around the time IIs started (August 22nd with just one person reporting something on the 19th.) With that being said, we've seen how variable things are from one year to the next so we will just have to see what happens 🙂

Straight from Wayne's website:

First Level Review
All applicants are reviewed to determine whether they meet the minimum Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) score of 24 total and overall GPA of 3.00. Applicants not satisfying these minimum requirements are not eligible for admission and will be sent a notice of rejection.

Second Level Review
All applicants meeting the minimum MCAT and GPA requirements are reviewed by the Selection Subcommittee of the Admissions Committee to determine which applicants will be asked to submit secondary application materials. Based on this review, applicants are either rejected or requested to submit secondary materials. At this point letters are sent to each applicant informing them of the decision relative to their application. An email is sent to applicants asked to submit a secondary which includes the secondary application as an attachment.

So you're right, it sounds like the stat screen is very preliminary.

Not entirely the adcom also mentioned the number of OOS interviewed is significantly lower than the number of IS, hence why wayne is not considered one of the more OOS friendly schools and so selective on sending ii's and secondaries to OOS applicants.

Still would be nice to get some numbers though.

Well yeah it's a public school there's heavy in-state bias.

Since i'm in-state, I have no problem with that whatsoever. :meanie:

----

Regarding numbers, it seems you can get a decent picture:

4655 applicants (1481 IS, 3174 OOS)
~1200 secondaries (would be fair to assume about a 2:1 IS bias or so - that leads to 800:400 IS/OOS)
~800 total interviews (about 75% of those are IS)
365 offers made IS
164 offers made OOS

The earliest interview invite that was posted on last year's thread was on 8/22, so fingers crossed for tomorrow? 🙂

Nice, btw where did you get this info? I am assuming USNews membership subscription? I ask b/c if this information is true, it appears you have greater than 2/3 chance of interview after receiving a secondary?

And yea, judging by yours and backtobasic's awesome stats and state residence I bet you guys are going to be all good for Wayne State. Us OOS folk are going to have a different story though haha. At least if these above mentioned #'s are true, I should be honored that I even got a secondary with my OOS status haha!

We should probably add a week since AMCAS was open later this year...?

The interview stats are rough numbers from the MSAR but everything else is from that link that I posted above.
