2013 APPIC Internship Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
15 applications turned in; I'm happy. Next up: what's the consensus: do I deactive my facebook profile until interviews are over, or is that a tad extreme? Also one site instructs you to set up an visit after turning in the application. Seems a tad gung-ho to do that today. Do I wait until at least after the application deadline to do that? I know there are no definite answers- just looking for advice.

Most clinical psych folks I know (including myself) keep their Facebook privacy settings fairly high anyway. If you're taking reasonable precautions to keep clients from finding/seeing your Facebook profile, I wouldn't see a reason to go beyond that for training directors. If you use the "view as" setting on your profile, you can see how much of your Facebook profile is visible to the public. Make sure to check your profile and cover photos, as those are public by default.

Agreed. I know at least one site I applied to said explicitly in their applicant selection information that they do a social media search of the applicants, and I'm sure more do it even if it's not listed in their brochure.

Wow, that's pretty intense. Though, like others have said, my privacy settings are set pretty high and I don't really have anything on there that I wouldn't want people to see.

I wouldn't apply to such a place. What nonsense. To me this screams, "we want to get up all up in your business and see if we can find anything remotely controversial about you"...because, you know, as a psychologist, you cant do or say anything remotely off the cuff for fear of offending a group of half Caucasian, half Spanish rodeo clowns or something." Seriously, who had time for this?!

I could certainly understand how it'd be aversive (to me) if a site were spending inordinate amounts of time running social media background checks on applicants. But with the information being out there currently, I could see a site justifying at least glancing at a potential intern's facebook page just to make sure their cover photo isn't of them urinating on a police car while chugging a bottle of vodka and flipping off the camera or something. That's just my opinion, though.

What is it is just one of the above?

Honestly, most sites complain about not having enough time to even review the materials. This seems excessive. That said - it is safe to assume everyone does a public search on you when you apply for a job. The fact that these people mention it in the announcement does just make them seem like tools. But if I were back applying for internship, it wouldn't have stopped me. Privacy settings, folks...

BTW, my privacy settings were already set to the highest they can be by facebook... but I have a pretty unique name and a google of my name turns up a lot of results.. most of them psych related (or computer related since I'm a nerd) but still.. Just curious if disabling the fb was the standarard and I didnt know or if that was an overreaction. I'm actually glad it's not par the course.

Probably depends on which one of the three it was...🙂

It's not necessarily what I'd personally do, but at this point it's pretty commonplace in the job market as a whole, so I wouldn't fault someone for it if they did. I think it's just something that, like you said, should essentially be assumed/expected to occur.

I have a unique name as well and have been concerned about google searches as well. The only other social media site I use is Pinterest. Although my privacy settings on Pinterest are supposed to prevent pulling me up in searches I am able to find some of my pins that others have repinned. Now I'm thinking about deactivating that. Is this an issue for anyone else?

Ok - does anyone have any idea when we will start hearing? I was hoping someone had already gone through last years' forum to see when we will start hearing. I have a site with an 11/21 deadline and one with a 12/1 deadline (yep) and I am hoping that I could slide them in If I lose out on some interviewers. I am thinking I might could do that with the 12/1 date. (That is if I decide to worry about limiting my number of applications).

Sadly, I've already looked through. Based on last year, applicants starting getting interview offers near the end of November. I am thinking that if sites pushed back their due dates, that might push back notifications too (but I hope not).

Current intern - good luck everyone! This is doable!
I know my site started inviting, but it is one of the very very early birds.
Last year I kept getting interviews until the sites deadlines...

Are you saying that your site had a deadline that was this week (I presume, the earliest deadline I saw was the 29th) and has already starting inviting people?

Seriously?? Most sites extended deadlines, so they haven't even gotten all of their applications yet! I need a break between submissions and obsessively checking my email... I wasn't expecting to hear anything until at least the end of the month. 🙂

I see no reason why you would need to deactivate pinterest unless you are pinning porn or a collection or artistic drug paraphernalia. As long as your stuff is set to as private as you can get it, I really wouldn't waste any worry time on that. Save your worries for interview callbacks.

I'm submitting my applications by Monday. I'm definitely wanting a break until I start constantly checking my e-mail... I can't believe that the early sites are already sending out invitations!

I applied last year, and I didn't hear from anyone until Thanksgiving break.

I meant the deadline for interview invitation!!
My site's deadline for application is mid November, I believe. But they already started inviting to interviews.

Doesn't that sort of defeat the purpose of a deadline?

Eh, not necessarily. They won't accept new applications past the deadline, it doesn't mean they won't look at applications until after it.

I don't want to hear back yet though... give me at least a two week break!

I share your sentiments about Wayne State!

The posted the announcement on one of the recent Match News e-mails, but I don't think it is on any of the websites yet unfortunately

Are you thinking about Henry Ford's posting in one of the Match News emails? I went back through them all and didn't see a peep about Wayne, and, Jason Williams didn't know anything about it either. Bummer. I'm also from Detroit and was really interested in their integrated track.

Eh, I don't think so. Some sites specifically said they reviewed apps on a rolling basis and would extend interviews in a similar fashion. Makes sense to me, it's got to be hard sitting down with a pile of 100+ applications and having a week or so to decide who you're interviewing while doing all the other stuff they do in a regular week.

I would email Dr. Jason Williams and ask him if, in the meantime, you can send unofficial transcripts to these sites and state that one, or however many, have asked for that.

Ugh, that's horrible. I'd probably do what LMK said anyway... send all of the sites a copy of your unofficial transcript via email, and include a note saying something like... "Hello, after I submitted my application to you for an internship position, another site had told me that there was no copy of my official transcript attached to my application. The APPIC site shows that they have received my transcript, and I am actively working with them to try to solve the problem. Just in case you did not receive the transcript, I am attaching an unofficial copy until you can receive the official one directly from APPIC. Please let me know if you have any questions and I'm sorry for the inconvenience." Of course, since you've already emailed them a few times, this might not be the best way to go. 🙁. I'm sorry this happened. Hopefully you're emailing with department secretaries and support staff, and the actual Directors of Training won't even know this happened.

Thanks, LMK. Although my DCT never responded on what to do on this Friday and I was waiting on him to lead that to be polite, I emailed Dr. Williams late on Friday doing just that. 👍

Alas, no most of these emails were the DCTs. In the end, I think it was 3 total emails to the sites. I didn't have contact information for secretaries except for 3 sites. However, the good news is that most of the sites have been REALLY nice about this. They actually seem more frustated with my DCT, which shows me that there is hope for the world. His chicken little email to my sites was annoying, but Friday, three sites responded telling him to calm down. I am hoping that I will get a sympathy vote. One site mentions this happens every year to at least 1 or 2 applicants.

The silver lining is that the DCT for one of my top sites found the issue and left a voicemail saying that "my application was very strong and they wanted to consider it." :xf: That was after he kind of accused of me of not ordering it, on time but oh well. He found out the issue and was very understanding and apologized. 🙂

ALSO, AGAIN IF ANYONE IS OUT THERE WHO HAD TO DO THIS - PLEASE LET ME KNOW, and I will order these suckers right now.

Update - APPI director said no sending transcripts directly to sites... at least at this point.

Same thing happened with my supplementals! Everything appeared uploaded successfully on my APPIC portal but two sites called and said they could not view anything and I had to frantically email them and beg them to accept my supplementals.

I don't think you are technically allowed to send anything to a site outside of APPIC but this is their fault so they should wave normal standards. I hope that the APPIC people will also send something on your behalf if any sites need some sort of verification.

Really sorry this is happening. It's so great that someone found the issue and alerted you.

Yeah, it makes sense if a site explicitly says that they extend invites on a rolling basis. If not, extending actual invites before the deadline seems sketchy to me. I see no issue with them reviewing materials before the deadline, but sending invites (which are limited in number) before the deadline seems unfair, unless you've said upfront that you will be doing so.

Maybe it's a site that sends out a ton of invites? I've seen some sites that interview 1/3 of their applicants. Maybe they are really only screening out the definite NOs

I regret to inform you with great sadness that our internship program has come to an end due to a loss of funding. *We*therefore cannot accept any applications for the general (#136711) or the integrative care track (#136712) for the 2013-2014 training year.

Well, shoot. Here's the funny part. That Match News, and one other, were both in my spam filter for my school's email! ALL of the other ones got through just fine, but THAT one was in my spam! Too bad, I was really, really interested in that site.

Well, I officially submitted my applications. Eeek. Now the waiting begins....

Congrats on submitting.
We're now both in the same boat.
I wish everyone good luck, safety, good interviews, and 11 interviews each (since that'd mean 99% matching!).

11 interviews! I'm not sure I'd want that many! I'd be thrilled to get more than the average 6, but given the schedule, I think I wouldn't do as well if I had 11! That's a lot of traveling!

I wish everyone well in matching for internship this year!! :luck: :xf:

Hi Everyone:

Congrats to those who have submitted. I was in away in another country stuck for a few days because JFK airport in NY was closed. I just returned and missed a few deadlines which SUCKS. Do any of you know if the following are still accepting applications:

Montefiore- NY
Bellevue-NY
North Bronx-NY

Thank you

So sorry to hear about your travel difficulties! On the APPIC website, there are details regarding all of the sites that have extended their deadlines. You can find it here: http://www.appic.org/Match/News-Archives. Also, there are updates about deadline extensions sent out almost daily via the MATCH-NEWS listserv. You should definitely subscribe if you have not already. Best wishes!

Weill Cornell's application deadline in NY has NOT been extended

Re: If sites are still accepting applications... I'd just go to the "Internship program designations" page on the AAPI itself and see if they're still listed. Though I'd do it soon; most of the sites that did extend their deadlines did so until today, and some said by the end of the business day. Good luck!

sorry... can't figure out how to delete a post.

I got an email request for an interview at Community Healthlink. They must be offering them on a rolling basis since their deadline isn't until later.

Good luck all!

Congrats!
Every time I get an email, I get nervous. Hoping to hear something one way or another soon.

Eeks! That time already?! 😱 :scared:

Good luck, everyone! May the invites start rolling in for one & all. :luck:

Ha, I hope not! I'm not ready!

I talked to my friend who applied to similar sites last year and she said she got her first response on thanksgiving day.

I just got an email with the subject line, "Site Name predoctoral internship" and got all excited but it was just a generic "we received your completed application" email. 🙂
