2013 APPIC Internship Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Matched at my #1, this is my second year, so the news is so welcomed! Just heard that my program had 100% match rate this year (only APA-accredited sites allowed)

I matched at my top site!! APA accredited and only 3 hours from home so I can come home on weekends. I assume that we will be getting phone calls this morning from the clinical training directors at the various sites to confirm thing?? Does anyone know what the next step is??.

Congratulations to everyone who matched! I'm really bummed that others didn't, though. The imbalance situation is just horrible.

Did anyone else match to the VA in Columbia MO or the Missouri Health Sciences Consortium? So excited to be going there later this year and excited to meet my internship cohort.

I am so happy that I finally opened that email!!! lol!!!

I'm matched in my home city, and finally get to reunite with my family!!! My husband is BEYOND ecstatic!

So glad all of this is over...And very happy that my school matched 100%, including both clinical and counseling students! 😀

Congrats to everyone with positive news this morning! I feel incredibly lucky that I matched to my first choice today, too. 🙂

For those who didn't match - it's so tough. A year ago, I was in your shoes, and just felt like utter crud. It's hard. You will get there, and it's utter poppycock when it's a two year process. Personally, I took some time to just sit with it, and then gradually got up and dusted myself off. I focused on three areas to make myself more competitive for the 2013 application process.

1. More individual therapy hours, in a new training setting.

2. Further along on the dissertation. (Last year I'd just proposed, and this year, I'm drafting my discussion and will be defended by August.)

3. A few more poster presentations at a national meeting.

I think those three areas were quite helpful to focus on, and really made all of the difference in terms of getting interviews. I went from 2 interviews in 2012 to 8 in 2013, and am now happily matched.

All the best - this forum has been incredibly helpful, and I've appreciated all the advice and info from these posts.

Yes, for those that didn't match, I was in your shoes last year, and I felt wretched. I cried throughout the day, and my husband took the day off to commensurate. I tried my hand at Phase II, but knew I would be okay to wait another year, and I am glad I did.

This year, I too matched at my #1. What really helped me this year was that I focused on improving my interviewing skills, and worked harder to make a case for my training goals and how it fit with the program. I am so thrilled even though I will be about 3 hours drive away from the hubby, the site I am matched at was a much better fit for me than the local site. Suffice it to say I would have been happy just to match, but to get my #1 vindicates that I am a quality applicant and just had bad luck last year.

So, again, to those of you that didn't match, my heart goes out to you. Do what you can to cope these next fews days, and keep your head high. To get this far in our schooling means that you do have the capacity to become a psychologist, the odds just happened to be stacked against you this year.

Congrats! I know two people from my cohort have matched for sure. Waiting for the email from our DCT about everyone else.

I matched to my top site!! Wooohooo!!

Crap, now I really have to get to work on my dissertation.
So funny, this was my reaction too 🙂 First, Oh holy hell I got my #1!!!! Then, Oh, now I have to get my dissertation done. Ugh.

Congrats to all that matched! This about sums it up: http://youtu.be/MBsHhnR6elE

For those that didn't, know that it's because of an incredibly imbalanced and broken system -- don't take it personally, and don't lose hope.

+1

Congratulations to all who matched, and to those who're now gearing up for phase II, I wish you the very best. The entire match process can be brutal, and one from which many of us "on the other side" are not far removed. Given the number of new sites/spots this year, I wouldn't at all be surprised to see an even greater number of excellent phase II options this year than last.

Edit: And just noticed that the APPIC stats show there are currently 282 spots still open, of which 84 are APA- or CPA-accredited.

There are some amazing sites participating in Phase II! Lots of unfilled prime spots to get picked up!

is the list out already, I thought it wasn't till 11am?

I am happy to say I matched.

Yeah, my program doesn't allow non-accredited ones. The faculty are like bouncing off of the walls right now 🙂

Matched at my top choice! Everyone in my cohort matched in their top two!!

Wow a VA in California got unfilled! I wonder if that has ever happened before? Someone needs to jump on that, although they have to be strong in Neuro. Seems like more neuro sites got unfilled from these good internships.

Exited to say that I matched to my 2nd choice! Wishing all those going through phase too the best during this difficult process, but there are many great sites in phase two! Fingers crossed for each and every one of you!!! If there is anything I can do to help please let me know! I would be happy to look over cover letter or anything anyone needs!!

Congrats to those who matched. To those who didn't...hang in there. I was there not too many years ago. Give Phase II a shot if you can. Even if that doesn't work either, your career is not over, it just hit a snag.

Best of luck to everyone.

Yeah, hang in there if you didn't match and go get those reputable phase II spots!

Once the initial shock is over, I would also encourage people to spend some time increasing awareness about the internship crisis and joining advocacy groups like APAGS. I would love to see more media attention garnered towards this problem. If people are willing to share their stories in the form of a video/op-ed piece this can really help increase funding for our cause and be a powerful motivator for the APA to act more aggressively.

Last year the APA approved a $3 million internship stimulus package. APAGS helped mobilize this effort.

For those applying to Phase II- I'm curious how many sites people are applying to. I'm struck by how many great, APA-accredited options are on the list of available positions... so I'm finding I currently have a rather large list.

Ugh I'd so much rather be partying right now.

Thanks to everyone in this thread for providing distraction, comic relief and support. This process really has been far too consuming and stressful.

ResearchGirlie, I've been thinking of you all morning because you hadn't posted (I hope that doesn't sound creepy)! Hope you're doing okay.

Haha! That's nice; not creepy! I matched to my first choice so I'm doing well. I somewhat regret my rankings but I'm thrilled to be done with match and to be going to a solid site.

I noticed a couple sites that I applied to (and did not receive an interview) ended up with unmatched positions. They were both pretty great sites which makes me wonder if they simply didn't rank everyone or if it was just that everyone they ranked preferred other placements. I was honestly surprised to see them on there with openings...

What are people's thoughts about applying to places in phase II when you were not offered an interview in phase I?

I'd love to hear other people's thoughts. Perhaps there's a good reason not to re-apply. That said, if I were in your shoes I'd totally reapply. What's the harm? At this point, a small application fee (if at all in phase II) and revising a cover letter?

Like bmed, I don't know what the right decision is but I'd reapply as well. Good luck!!

I will be re-applying to 2 sites like that. I figure, there's no harm in it -- I already have good cover letters for them that won't need a huge amount of modification, and I've done the research so I'm pretty sure they're good fits (even though they clearly didn't think so the first time around!). I read that sites usually don't mind if you do that, and it may even be easier for them because they might remember you and have relaxed some of their requirements. The cons in the situation are few (lost time, but I don't think I'll spend that much on time on those sites), so I'm gonna go for it.

I went through and narrowed it down to 18, with 12 being ones that seem to be a really good fit and 6 "if I have time and energy" options. I have no idea what the right answer is, though. 🙂 And yes, I would very much rather be partying!

I actually matched in phase I (thank god) but was looking on the list for my friend who unfortunately wasn't so lucky. I had the same thought as most of you- no harm in reapplying -esp bc you have no idea how close you were to making the first round of cuts. She is unsure bc she feels like " those sites clearly don't like me, why waste my time on them again?" I don't know- I'm trying to stay optimistic for her bc she really liked those sites and felt like they were good fits - it feels like a 2nd chance to me!

Huge congrats to everyone who matched! And good luck in phase II to those who are going through that. I've heard from two of the three programs where I have connections--one had 100% match rate (school psych) and one had 10/12 (counseling psych).

I agree with what others have said--if I were in that position, I'd be fine with reapplying to sites during Phase II to which I'd previously applied in Phase I.

From what I remember, that piece of advice seems to be consistent with what's been said in prior years as well.

What are people's thoughts about applying to places in phase II when you were not offered an interview in phase I?

I'm thrilled to say I matched to my top choice but I wanted to respond to your post to let you know that this is my second year applying and the site I matched to was also my top choice last year (and clearly didn't work out). I honestly think that I needed that year to take a breather from school and to figure out exactly what I was looking for in an internship and where I want to go with my career. Last year I was more focused on just matching for the sake of matching because the thought of not matching seemed like the end of the world (it isn't!).

Additionally, I looked through the sites still available and saw 3 sites I had ranked are still looking for interns in Phase 2. All three sites would have been great training opportunities and I know I would have been happy to be placed there so I'm thinking that most of the students they ranked simply matched to sites higher on their rank list. I had no qualms last year with re-applying to sites I didn't match to or applying to sites that had not offered me an interview during Phase 1 because this is such an arbitrary and confusing process that is more of a reflection of a stupid computer algorithm rather than your skills or experience as a clinician. When I interviewed at the site I matched to this year for the second time, the training director was completely surprised I had not matched last year... I'm just glad I took my adviser's advice to apply there again this year despite not matching last year because I was originally not going to reapply (assuming that, if I did not match with them last year, they must not have ranked me very favorably).

Try to stay positive and keep your chin up!

I'm glad to say that I matched - exciting, overwhelming, gotta get my dissertation done! Sadly my great friend and co-conspirator in all this did not match and she is so amazing it really illustrates the huge problems with this system. I am sending good vibes to everyone who didn't match - you worked hard and you deserve a match and this sucks! Hopefully you can snag one of the great Phase II sites.

Wow a VA in California got unfilled! I wonder if that has ever happened before? Someone needs to jump on that, although they have to be strong in Neuro. Seems like more neuro sites got unfilled from these good internships.

This surprises me. Dr. Cole does some stellar work out there. Neuro people, go get this spot!

Didn't match. Second time applying. Devastating.

I'm sorry to hear that... This entire process sucks. We had one student in our program who didn't match this year, and she also is a second time applicant. I hope that your program is being supportive at this time. Good luck if you decide to pursue Phase II or with wherever your path might take you. :luck:
