2013 APPIC Internship Application Thread

Personalized email invite to Pine Rest 11/28 (generic email with personalized attachment). Thought it was a rejection based on the generic message...but a happy surprise. I submitted on 11/14.

Never mind... Just got my rejection from Central Arkansas... Oh goodie haha

For those of you who received a phone invite to Charles George VAMC in GA, have you received an email yet regarding the interview (e.g. travel arrangements, details of interview schedule)? They said they would email everyone but I haven't received anything yet and just wanted to see if anyone else was in the same boat!

I haven't received any information from them yet. I am going in January though....As an aside, I am realizing that the planning and rigidity of these interview schedules makes this entire process absolutely insane.

Most definitely! I was foolish to think that I was actually going to "enjoy" the few weeks of not having to write any more cover letters.. Instead I'm stressing about if and when I'll hear from sites! Coordinating interview times is a mess too.. especially when you're trying to make plans on making it from one side of the United States to the next. broke much? 🙂

Any idea which track(s) have been notified today for UIC?

Charles George is Asheville....Right??

Generic interview invite for CAMH (Toronto, ON) Adult Track! 😀

Personalized email invitation at University of Minnesota Medical School on 11/28. Interview dates are 1/4 or 1/11.
Congrats on the interview! Was the invite for a specific track(s) or just a general invite to interview? I didn't hear from UMN med school so I'm trying to decide if I should hold out hope.

I also haven't heard from them... but their brochure makes it sound like it would be a general invite, not track-specific.

It also says that they'll notify people on Monday, December 3rd... so I'm not worrying too much until then. 🙂. Keep up hope!

Question for those who got an invite from Boston....

Did you guys receive interviews with both the rotations you specified in your cover letter? Since each major rotation has its own match number this means we can rank both right? So its almost like having two interviews instead of one? Or am I misunderstanding...

Thanks! Congrats to everyone who heard good news today and best of luck to everyone tomorrow 🙂

It seemed like a general invite, since their website said you did not have to choose tracks until after you interview. I had listed in my cover letter that I was interested in the 2 tracks that have neuropsych rotations. But the email invitation did not say anything specific about tracks. I thought it was strange that I received an email today since I saw on their site that it said they would notify us on 12/3.

Thanks SUSHILOVER and LETSGONYR!

I remembered specifying the tracks I'm interested in when I wrote the cover letter, but I forgot the part about how the tracks aren't ranked until after the interview. Too many apps in too short a time... I'll keep my fingers crossed until 12/3. Good luck everyone!

Yeah... I'm trying to stay positive since that site looks like a really good match for me on paper. But we'll see what happens. Congrats on the interview, Sushi. 🙂.

Just received the following:

Interview at northeast Florida state hospital, personalized email, dates are 1/7 and 1/14

Open house invitation for western state hospital, 1/14. They don't offer on-site interview, and open house is not mandatory.

Good question! I received interviews with both the Dual Diagnosis: Post Traumatic Stress Disorder / Substance Use Disorder and Inpatient Psychology and Therapeutic Recovery Program at Brockton rotations.

Here's what it says on their website:

"Interns will train in two rotations: a Match (8-month) rotation, as well as a second (4-month)
rotation, which is selected to assure a sufficient breadth of experience for our interns. Because
each rotation has a distinct APPIC match (program) number, the results of the Match assure interns
their assignment to a specific 8-month rotation. Assignments to the four-month rotation, selection
of research mentors, and the opportunities for adjunctive training experiences and supervisors
are guided by intern's other interests and training needs, which are discussed in detail after the Match
results (and 8-month rotation) are known."

So, I'm guessing you're right--you rank both sites in the match, and hopefully you're assigned to your preferred 8-month rotation (assuming you rank that rotation higher) rather than being assigned to an 8-month rotation that you ranked lower out of the two. Seems like it could get complicated though! I think they also try to provide more information about this in the invite letter.

word of warning--one of my invites from today showed up in my junk mail!!! be sure to check that daily!!

Personalized (very kind) rejection in my spam folder. I didn't see it for a few hours. To everyone who applied there, I might check your spam just in case! Good luck!

Correction, western state hospital open house is on 1/7. Generic email. Sorry!

Hmm... nope, nothing in my spam folder. Still holding out hope!

Any idea which track(s) have been notified today for UIC?

I got an email in regards to my application to the Child Track at UIC today. It looked to be a group email for those invited to interview (I was BCC'd) and Interview Dates: Friday, Jan 18; Friday, Jan 25. I applied on 10/30.

My email specified my track (Child), but I also applied to the Behavioral Science Division of the NCPTSD, so I am guessing that my application was only selected for one track.

Hi Lago, I was invited for just one of the rotations that I specified (but I think it was pretty clear from my materials that I was a strong match for one specific rotation).

Email rejection to Boston Consortium

***Interview Notifications have started, see below: :luck:
As was previously done - I can keep a running list of sites that have sent out notification of invitation for interviews if everyone sends me the messages and I can continually update here on the first post, so no one has to search through the list... Please include site, track if applicable, email/call, personal/generic, and interview dates if known.

Oh, just saw that the Anka interviews here are in January. Mine is Dec. 7, for whatever it's worth.

Hey all,

Has anyone signed up for that program with Spirit, where you have access to extra-discounted fares? there is a $60/year membership fee, i'm wondering if it's worth it...

First rejection today from Pine Rest. Sent personalized email withpersonalized attachment. I have not heard from Cherokee but I see they sent out invitestoday, I suppose I can scratch that one off my list too.

Isn't Spirit the airline that charges for carry-ons? I'd check stuff like that first... with baggage AND carry-on fees, a cheap fare becomes a pretty expensive one fairly quickly.

I've never heard of a membership with them -- do you have any information about it? I'm interested to read more about whether it might be worthwhile (especially with a lot of shorter-notice flights we'll need to purchase). Thanks.

**update: okay, scratch that, I found the information. Here it is in case others are interested.

Also, it seems that as of October, Spirit charges $30 each way per carry-on bag paid in advance and $100 each way (yes, $100) per carry-on paid at the gate. Just a heads up to anyone purchasing their tickets.

I noticed that Mailman is on the list of invites. Anyone know which track that is for? Thanks! and congrats to those with interviews!!

It seems like a lot of us are wondering the same thing. Hopefully this means that more news is going out soon.

OMG Spirit is SO horrible and unreliable! I can't believe they're even still around!

I second this! Spirit is terrible. Being charged for a freaking carry-on bag is ridiculous. They also charge to print out your boarding pass. I remember also being bombarded with their credit card promotion several times throughout the flight when I last made the mistake of flying their airline. Overall I find them to be very obnoxious. Fly Southwest instead!

I last flew them in 2007. They canceled my connecting flight in FLL (from Aguadia) , wouldn't allow me to board in PR and offered no lodging, reimbursement for the car I had to rent to drive to San Juan to make a flight the following day, and offered no compensation for the inconvenience which cost me a day of work. Will never fly with them again.

ANY other norcal invites except Anka and UCSF? Anything?

It is pretty quiet in norcal so far. So far I just have an invite for Anka, nothing else except some acknowledgement of application emails.

For those of you interested in VAs:

"WILLIAM S. MIDDLETON MEM VET HOS" in Madison, WI is looking for applicants and still accepting applications. They are not yet APPIC or APA, however, completing an internship at a VA will allow you to apply for positions within the VA.

They are not APA, but I applied there using the APPIC system, same as with my APA/APPIC accredited programs--doesn't that mean they are APPIC?

No - there are some sites that use APPIC's application portal and participate in the Match while not yet being APPIC members...

They aren't APPIC, they (along with the other new VA programs) cannot submit their self-study to APA until their first full class of interns is done. They grant an exception/waiver if you continue within the VA system. But it's important to know that licensing is far more difficult in many states, and other federal/state agencies do not offer that waiver so if you apply there be pretty sure you either a) won't need APA for whatever job/post-doc you want (so you'd be removing these type of sites since they require APA: military, state prisons, federal prisons) or B) you stay in the VA system. I am currently doing my practicum in the BOP and the Chief of Psychology said he personally won't hire non-accredited VA interns because they can't promote up within the federal system.

thanks! they aren't my 1st choice, but my program requires we choose 1 non-apa, so if figured if i have to, a non-apa va still keeps some careers open that i am interested in...

I've flown Spirit a few times because of their cheep fares and random weekend adventure plans and overall they have been pretty unreliable. I knew this when booking the flights, but I was not very concerned with arrival/departure times for these flights. They are not an airline I would consider using for important travels as they often cancel their flights or are delayed.

Does anyone know how quickly VAs typically receive APA accreditation after the first class goes through? This VA is applying this summer. Just curious.

It depends on when they submit their self-study. The earliest they can submit it is after their first internship class is done and moved on (because they have to provide outcome data). Once they submit the study, there is likely revisions and then after the revisions are completed a site-visit is scheduled. One VA told me to expect about 1-2 years after their self-study is submitted before they become accredited. I would NOT count accreditation for any non-accredited site during your internship year because they do not control when their site visit is scheduled or how many revisions their self-study will need to go through.

It seems like a lot of us are wondering the same thing. Hopefully this means that more news is going out soon.

To relay a message from someone who wishes to remain anonymous... "the APPIC listing made it look like you were supposed to specify tracks but you actually weren't (this is per Mailman's training dir). You just rank the tracks after you visit and learn about them - so I think this means that they didn't pay attention to which tracks you mentioned in your letter."

I looked at the notifications from last year. It looks like people received invites on two different dates (11/23 and 12/05). So I'm not giving up hope yet! 🙂. Here's to hoping we hear soon :luck:
