2013 APPIC Internship Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
To relay a message from someone who wishes to remain anonymous... "the APPIC listing made it look like you were supposed to specify tracks but you actually weren't (this is per Mailman's training dir). You just rank the tracks after you visit and learn about them - so I think this means that they didn't pay attention to which tracks you mentioned in your letter."

I looked at the notifications from last year. It looks like people received invites on two different dates (11/23 and 12/05). So I'm not giving up hope yet! 🙂. Here's to hoping we hear soon :luck:

I haven't been able to find the list in the thread from last year. How did you find it among all the posts?

For those of you asking about Mailman... I recieved an interview there yesterday (Nov 28th) around 8 something in the morning. It is for the child track.

It depends on when they submit their self-study. The earliest they can submit it is after their first internship class is done and moved on (because they have to provide outcome data). Once they submit the study, there is likely revisions and then after the revisions are completed a site-visit is scheduled. One VA told me to expect about 1-2 years after their self-study is submitted before they become accredited. I would NOT count accreditation for any non-accredited site during your internship year because they do not control when their site visit is scheduled or how many revisions their self-study will need to go through.

This. It can be dangerous to count on accreditation being granted before it actually occurs, especially when you're only there for a year. However, I think it's also important to mention that with VAs specifically, there's an exception to their APA-accredited internship requirement that applies only to VA internship sites. Thus, even if the site isn't accredited at the time the individual completes training, that person is still eligible for VA employment assuming the VA internship site is in line to be (and eventually becomes) accredited in the future.

Also, APA mentioned something about attempting to streamline the internship accreditation process. Not sure when that's going into effect, though.

In regards to which track the Mailman interviews are for, although you had to list your tracks of interest in the AAPI, the Interview Invitation (AKA "Open house" for Mailman) specifically states that it is a general interview and you will be introduced to all of the tracks while at the Open House and only after that will you rank after you decide what track/(s) you think that you are a best fit for. So, basically, if you get invited to an interview, it is for any and all tracks to which you applied.

Best of luck to everyone and I hope that helped!

For those of you lurking but who have already matched in previous years, I have a question.
Let's say I match at Site #15 (worst case scenario- the dreaded backup) and I dont get to do what I want to do on internship. Will I be able to break into one of my desired areas (sleep med or family medicine) for a fellowship, or will I more or less be "locked out" career wise at that point?

My PhD Program is in the process of going through APA accreditation right now, and (at least this is true for doctoral programs, so I'm guessing it's also true for internships) when sites do get accredited, the accreditation is retroactive to the date of the site visit. So if you were (in my case) enrolled in a doctoral program - or - (I'm assuming) an intern at the time of the visit, when that program or site eventually gets accredited, you are able to say that you graduated from an accredited program, or attended an accredited internship. Even if you have already finished up your training by the time the accreditation officially goes through.

Hope that helps!
Here's hoping for a day full of good news for us all 🙂

I've flown Spirit a few times because of their cheep fares and random weekend adventure plans and overall they have been pretty unreliable. I knew this when booking the flights, but I was not very concerned with arrival/departure times for these flights. They are not an airline I would consider using for important travels as they often cancel their flights or are delayed.

Okay, thanks. I've never flown with spirit so these warnings are helpful. Obviously cheap flights aren't a bargain if they don't get you where you need to be in time (and it sounds like they sometimes make up for the discount in fees, anyway).

With all the notifications coming out this week, it really surprises me that some sites are waiting until Dec 10th - 15th to offer interviews. What if all the Fridays are gone by then? It also surprises me that there are sites offering one -- literally ONE -- interview date. (Or two interview dates, one of which fills up within minutes -- it comes to the same in the end.) My calendar is getting booked up fast, and I hate the idea of having to choose between two sites that I'm really interested in before I even have the chance to see the programs.

I am also concerned about being able to schedule interviews with all of the sites that offer me an interview. I am interested in what others are planning on doing if (1) Interview dates conflict and you have to make a choice to go to one site or another and (2) if you have interviews dates that are scheduled back to back (e.g., Wed and Thurs) at two different sites that are far away from each other. How do you make an intelligent decision when you haven't seen sites in person?

I agree. I also didn't realize how much extra time cross country flights will take. For example, if I interview in California and have to fly back east there are practically no flights leaving after an all day (later than 5pm) that will allow you to make an interview the next day. So in effect a flight on the other coast takes three days.

Hey all,

Has anyone signed up for that program with Spirit, where you have access to extra-discounted fares? there is a $60/year membership fee, i'm wondering if it's worth it...

Oh god don't do Spirit!!! I've never felt more unsafe flying on a plane in my life. I flew there from FLL to Vegas and it was the worst experience of my life... not to mention they charge for carry on's now. I fly a lot, and I'd definitely recommend Jet Blue if possible, they usually have low fares, free checked bag, and TVs on every plane. Southwest is also good i've heard.

It's going to depend on a variety of variables, including: 1) the individual fellowship sites and their preferences, 2) the specialty area(s), and 3) how much pre-internship experience you have.

Fellowship sites, in general, understand how hectic the whole internship process is, and I'd imagine most of them would understand if an individual were unable to get as much experience as they'd desired in a particular area due to matching to a somewhat less-than-ideal site fit-wise.

It could be a bit of an uphill battle to remain competitive for top fellowship sites if you get absolutely no experiences in those areas on internship. HOWEVER, if you have a good bit of behavioral medicine experience from grad school, it would be a much easier sell. And it'd still certainly be worth applying regardless.

Anyone heading to the Central Arkansas VA for an interview next friday (12/7)? Would be nice to have someone to hang with while I'm there!

I second this! Spirit is terrible. Being charged for a freaking carry-on bag is ridiculous. They also charge to print out your boarding pass. I remember also being bombarded with their credit card promotion several times throughout the flight when I last made the mistake of flying their airline. Overall I find them to be very obnoxious. Fly Southwest instead!

thank you all as well--this is super helpful. sometimes there is a bargain you can't afford!

Is there anyone else still waiting to hear back from Central Arkansas VA? It seems that folks have been notified either way. I'm starting to wonder if I should email them...

I fly a lot, so here are some tips I've learned along the way:

- Do yourself a favor and never fly Spirit. Just say no, no matter how tempting the offer.
- Avoid checking a bag at all costs. Just carry on. When your flight is delayed due to weather and you land at 1am for an 8am interview the next morning, you will be so glad you do not have to wait another hour to get your checked luggage. This is imperative if you have a layover/changing planes, since the airlines are more likely to lose your luggage on an indirect flight.
- This brings me to my next point. Try to book direct flights as much as possible. You do not want to deal with missing your connecting flight. If you miss a connecting flight due to weather, the airlines do not have to pay to put you on a new flight, depending on their policy. You may end up paying an arm and a leg (like over a grand) to get on a new flight.
- Check your flight status before going to the airport. To make this easier, sign up for flight notifications so they email/text you status updates. If you see the flight is delayed, call the airline immediately. For most airlines, you can request to be put on another flight at no extra charge.
- If you think time will be an issue making a flight and you are flying during "rush hour," some airlines will let you pay a bit extra to go through the priority security lines, which can potentially save you lots of time.
- If something goes wrong with your flight, do not expect airline employees to treat you like a human being. Customer service is a thing of the past. If an airline employee is pleasant and helpful, take a moment to be grateful. If not, utilize your most effective relaxation exercises 🙂

I also have a lot of experience flying different airlines, so let me know if you have specific questions about them. I know everyone here loves Jet Blue, but I have to give a word of caution about them. They usually don't have that many flights per day, and most flights they do have are indirect. So if a flight is delayed/cancelled, you have a very hard time rebooking on a later flight, and often have to wait until the next day if your flight was scheduled for the evening. I usually avoid them for this reason.

Edit: I forgot one of my most important tips: DO NOT book airfare through sites like Orbitz, Travelocity, etc. Book through the airlines only. If something goes wrong (delay/cancellation etc), the airlines will not help you if you book through these 3rd party sites. You would have to call Orbitz, which takes forever, while everyone else is able to speak to the airline reps directly at the airport. You will get screwed over.

I am starting to wonder that about NE Florida State Hospital. Rejection letters went out before Thanksgiving, but now invites have gone out too. Is anyone else still waiting to hear from them?

It is an uncomfortable position to be in (because this process isn't - ha!). I certainly don't want to pester anyone but at the same time I would like to know that the site is not expecting me to contact them or that an email did not go through. Any thoughts on the best way to handle this?

It is difficult to manage one's own anxiety during this process. Sites do have until Dec. 15th, however, to contact you, unless they otherwise indicate in their materials that they will contact you by a specific day. I would wait until after the 15th to contact the site.

Personalized e-mail interview invite to the Iowa City VA today (11/29). There are no specific tracks. Interview/open house dates: Dec. 14th, Dec. 18th, Jan. 9th, and Jan. 17th, from 9am – 2:30pm. Also offering phone interviews for Dec. 19th from 1-4:30pm and Jan. 10th from 8am-noon. I applied on November 5.

Thanks AA. Makes me feel much, much better. I have experience in grad school in both of those areas, but obviously not all the experience I want.

I would imagine you should be in the clear, then. I can only speak to my own experiences in neuropsych, but the general expectation is this--the internship year, first and foremost, is considered a time to "shore up" any weaknesses you might have. If you come in with a significant amount of neuropsych experience, then neuropsych isn't one of your weaknesses, and you can afford to justifiably spend much more time in other areas (e.g., therapy). Conversely, if you have little to no neuro experience, then you'd be best served by spending at least half your time in neuro-related rotations.

It's assumed that you'll get at least some neuro experience on internship, but I wouldn't be surprised if people have matched while getting little to none, assuming they had a lot coming in. Also, if you make it known to your internship site that you really, really want a particular experience, more often than not they seem to be able to find a way to get it to you somehow, even if it's done informally and tacked on to another rotation.

My sentiments exactly! For those sites offering ONE interview date (actual interviews...not open house visits), they are making an already difficult process even more unnecessarily difficult! While this may help them gauge our dedication to their program, it certainly left a negative impression with me. Right now I have six interview offers, and I am EXTREMELY honored to receive every single invite that I am extended. I just wish these programs would be more flexible and timely (in notifying us of the interview AND returning our scheduling emails). I have to make some serious decisions in the next few days b/c I don't have funding to go traveling across the nation in an inefficient manner. Those who are being more flexible with me may end up being the sites where I interview; which is a horrible way to pick because we may have to choose before even seeing the programs. I really do like to get a "feel" for people...and I know my "favorites" will likely change once I visit places. Yes, truth be told, I just want a freaking internship! But, wouldn't it be awesome to visit all the sites we get interviews with, and truly make a decision based on "fit"?! This may end up being less about "fit" and more about "finances and scheduling" for me! Oh well. Best of luck to everyone waiting to hear today!

Here's the advice I have gotten - get a calender and pencil in all the dates listed in APPIC (some sites do list dates), try to schedule as many interviews in December as possible and then leave Mondays and Fridays open. for me, that has been really tough though. Most of my sites didn't list dates. Also, I have gotten some invites while in session or in a meeting or class, and an hour later and I email or call and all the good dates/times are gone. I have been able to schedule two in December and one on a Wednesday/Thursday. The other 2 are on Fridays or Mondays. 🙁 One made you call (but could not email) to schedule - so annoying. You just had to leave voicemails for the secretary and pray she'd get back to you.

I was also told not to try and reschedule interview dates, so maybe you try dickering with the sites that are late to the game, but if it's a top site then you will have to make a choice. This is just a crazy business. Some sites are so reasonable about this and don't require interviews or will offer a Skype interview - I only saw 2 like that though. The expense and stress involved...how the sites react and treat you about this will tell you alot about them. Unfortunately, this is definitely a sellers market, so what we think probably doesn't matter all that much.

Sometimes you have to do a little extra searching to find the interview dates. For example, I found some interview dates listed on the APPIC directory, some on the actual program brochure, and then some on the actual website to the program. Don't make it clear cut, do they?

Another idea, which may not hold water, is going to the thread for the 2012 APPIC and seeing what interview dates they offered last year. Might give you at least SOME frame of reference?! Could also be risky so I wouldn't recommend basing a major decision off of this.

hear hear! i am trying to do december dates, but at the ame time i am applying across the country (but often in similar regions) so i've already struggled with taking an early date to keep jan more open vs being able to fly in, say jan the 9th, interview the 10th and then interview the 11th and fly out, which saves a lot of money and time.

i already have a site i can't interview at because 1 of their 2 dates overlap with the interview date of another top site with similar training in the area, that sent out invites 2 weeks ago, so of course all of us with similar career golas already snatched up that date. argh!

Yes. Loma Linda School of Medicine. Generic email rejection yesterday. I have heard that people have gotten rejections for a couple weeks already though, so likely rolling. Good luck.

Nyprincess-

First, a massive thank you for managing the invite list. It's exactly the kind of task I would wish on my worst enemy. You're the best.

Second, a request. Would you be willing to post a quick reply to the main thread when you update the list, so we can compulsively refresh one page instead of two? If that's too much of a hassle, feel free to disregard the suggestion. Another option might be to let us know when you usually update the main page (once a day at night, a few times throughout the day, etc.) so we can reserve checking it until then. Thanks again! 👍

Personalized invite! Still waiting to hear from nearly every other VA in the country though...I just hope that doesn't mean they are all waiting for Dec 15th to send out thier rejections.

Missed phone call followed by email for an interview for the Adult SMI track! Interview on 12/14.
