2013 APPIC Internship Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I have a question... Has anyone attached 4 letters of reference with their application so as to best cover various areas of professional development? For e.g., one ref could speak to my research but not so much my clinical work, one could speak about assessment but not intervention, etc. so all 4 might be necessary? Is this generally frowned upon by DCTs from your knowledge given that only 3 letters are required? I did that with one site and I wonder if they could put my application in the 'no' pile just for that?
If anyone has any experience around this or has been advised on this, I'd love your feedback!
Thanks!! 🙂

I had a very similar issue and was advised against including more than the required 3 letters, the logic being that it may be perceived as an "inability to follow simple instructions" or as trying to "one up" the other candidates. I did include 4 letters for two places but I made that clear in my cover letter and provided a rationale. I was rejected from one and am still waiting on the other.Of course you can never tell that this was the reason they didn't select you. The best test is if one of those places actually invites you, then you know it doesn't necessarily hurt. You should be ok since you only submitted 4 to one site, let us know if you get invited there!

I almost exclusively included four letters of reference in my applications. I changed the order of attachment depending on the site, but for all the places I applied to, I wanted to include recs that spoke to training diversity (e.g., I sent recs from research supervisor, academic advisor/clinical supervisor, clinical supervisor at a site similar to ones I've applied to for internship, and neuropsych assessment supervisor).

I've gotten rejections and interviews so far. I don't think the fourth hurt my chances but impossible to know.

My take on this is that in general, there are few situations in which it will help you--the site will either simply drop the 4th letter so as to be fair to other applicants, or (as mentioned) might actually look at it in terms of an inability to follow instructions and/or to gain an advantage over other applicants (that's just conjecture; I've never actually heard anyone openly say it). My best guess is that the former (i.e., sites simply don't review the 4th letter) is what occurs most often.

I can understand the desire to want to include more, but in the end, it has to end somewhere; otherwise, these applications packets could easily end up twice as long as they already are. I would say that with me personally, it might not sit well with me if >3 were included when only 3 were requested, but I don't know that it would actually influence my overall opinion about the applicant.

3 Rejections and 1 invitation to interview (Guidestone). Hurray! Good luck everyone.

BTW: I read in a reply a few pages back about the Sullivan Center for Children dropping out of the match? I don't remember reading this in any of the Match News e-mails and I'm pretty sure I've read them pretty thoroughly. When I looked on the APPIC directory, it was still there. Can anyone clarify? TY.

Thanks for your input, Murielle and rbak and AcronymAllergy 🙂 Yes, I have certainly considered some of those options but never thought of it as trying to gain an advantage over other applicants... I can see how some people might take issue with that. But I'm glad others have submitted 4 and gotten interviews!
Thanks again!

If they ask for 3, send 3 and no more. If they don't specify how many letters, then it's fair game to send four.

Can someone speak to the nature of responses from JHU. It seems folks have received rejections here, but how were they delivered? Has anyone been offered an interview?

Also, has anyone heard from Lehigh University?😱

Lehigh University applications are due today so it's unlikely that anyone has heard unless they are doing rolling admissions.

Hi All,

I am sadly unable to make it to the January 11th Cornell interview date (but all of the January 10th dates had already filled up by the time I could respond).

Would anyone who is scheduled for a January 10th interview at Cornell be willing to switch with me (and interview on Friday, January 11th instead)?

I am really hoping I don't have to forfeit my interview.

Please let me know!

Thanks so much!!

Mass email from BSU informing us of the delay in the review process and we will hear back from them by December 15th. This is a change from their posted date which was December 5th.

So, out of curiosity, is anyone else still waiting to hear from Geisinger? I know they sent out invites a week or so apart, just wondered if anyone else still has an open app out there.

Yep, still waiting. :xf:

I just received a personalized emailed invitation to interview Appalachian Regional Healthcare in Hazard Ky. This is my first interview notification. What a relief to finally get one. 3 rejections and a whole lot of silence with regard to my other applications. But ARH is one interview I was really wanting to get.

Mass email invitation to VA Puget Sound, American Lake division. Open house is on Jan 7th, 1-5:30, and is optional. I don't remember if there were tracks at this site, but if there were, I applied to the general one.

Just got an generic email from Miami VA for an interview. It just said Dear Applicant. They pretty much said pick dates from 1/7-2/1. 👍

I did prac here last year and I love it there so I'm hoping it works out!

ARH is neat, had a cohortmate that matched there 2 years ago.
I'm curious what your group therapy hours are, as that appears to be a sticking point for them, best as I can tell.
He said he loved his internship there, but.. they put a lot of pressure on people to get a provisional KY license.. and dismissed a person from internship for not doing it fast enough.

Interview invitation to Saint Elizabeths Hospital in DC. Dates are 1/4, 1/11, 1/18, and 1/25. Generic email.

So I applied to some VA's that were not APA accredited as long shot types of places. They state that you will still be able to apply for jobs/fellowships within the VA, so that makes me wonder- what other differences are there then between those sites and APA accredited sites. I'm not sure if I want to work in a VA, but I dont want to not have that option moving forward.

Non-personalized rejection email. Forensic track. 12/5 9:00am

You will still be able to be employed by the VA and get a post-doc if you attend a VA internship that has yet to be accredited; however, it will preclude you from working at DOCs, some Federal prisons, and any other agency that requires an APA approved internship. Additionally, if the VA has its APA site visit before or during your internship and they do, in fact, become APA approved then you will then have come from an APA accredited internship even if you have already completed your rotation.

Would anyone interviewing at Fort Worth ISD on 1/23 be willing to switch interview dates to 1/11? My interview is scheduled at 8:15 am on 1/11, and I would like to switch, if possible. Thanks!

Thanks. For those of you who are out of school, licensed, and working- if I want to work in a medical setting- VA or not- will going to one of these sites always kill me/ put me a step below others, or is it only difficult for some jobs. For example, I will never work for BOP or (primarily) as a university faculty. Just not interested in those jobs. What kinds of problems would I face immediately after internship, and then for the remainder of my career?

Really just depends on the site and the individuals looking for the applications. I exclusively sent 4 letters of references to all my sites but explained the reasoning in my cover letter. I wanted to touch on both my long-term and short-term experiences at a specific type of setting. From what I am told from a DCT, it does not really hurt, but they cannot guarantee the 4th letter will be read.

Hey, Runnerdoctor.
That someone was me.
I really wanted to apply for the Sullivan Center for Children in Fresno, CA.
In fact, I had my app all ready to submit but then couldn't find them on the site designation.

Here is the info I read on the Match News page:

APPIC Member #: 1122
Site Name: The Sullivan Center for Children
Location: Fresno, California
Training Director: Mark Barnes, Ph.D. - [email protected]

With the changing healthcare climate and third party reimbursement becoming less diverse limiting training opportunities for our interns it is with great sadness that The Sullivan Center must withdraw from participation in internship process this year. We regret the trouble and extra cost this may cause applicants.

🙁
I was really hopeful about this site, too.

Can I ask what date you requested for interview? I haven't heard from them either way and am curious if they are inviting by date.

Interview invite (personalized email) from University of Kansas Medical Center - interview dates 1/11 & 1/18

Thank You. After I posted I went to the APPIC website and looked this up. I really liked this site a lot, this is dissappointing. This is actually the second site that has dropped out that I applied too. 🙁 Oh well, I guess it just wasn't meant to be!
