2013 APPIC Internship Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm starting to keep a bullet point list of things that I'll professionally re-word and send to Greg Kellin once this process is over. I reserve the right to rephrase it depending on where I match. Everything from sites not adhering to the Dec 15 guideline causing total strain on my family (for planning trips to interview, etc) to sites after the deadline saying "oh sorry you applied, we decided to not have this track" to various other things. More than the match statistics this year, I'd be very interested in seeing the complaints list. Seems like there's some pretty agregious things happening across the board.

Not exactly professional conduct from the places where we're getting our capstone year of formal training.

Hi

Has anyone heard from Citrus Health Network (Miami Florida): I still havent heard anything yet from them and application notification deadline was December 15. I am wondering if I should go ahead and email them regarding my application status.

Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center (Bronx, NY): I know they have a application notification deadline January 15, but was wondering if anyone has heard from them yet. I actually applied to this program last year was invited to an interview but didnt match. I applied to them again because I really liked the program and it was align with my training goals. I did not want to use the same cover letter that I used last year for this program and I also redid all my essays and updated CV (as I recently defended my dissertation). I am hoping though that they invite me again for an interview.

thanks

As our focus shifts from notifications to the interview itself, I'm wondering how much time people plan to spend preparing for each interview. I know that last year, I did not spend enough time getting to know the sites and formulating good questions for them. This is something I plan to remedy this year.

Me too! But perhaps another thread should be started for that. I don't know. It may be a bit stinging for those who did not get an interview. Or maybe wait a few days? What do you all think?😕

I started an interviewing specific thread! Go post there! 👍

Has anybody heard from St.Louis Internship Consortium?

Did you e-mail and ask for an interview? I have not heard back.. it's very confusing since the site is different.

I think you are supposed to contact the training director and faculty of your choice to engage them. I think they will rank applicants based on what you sent them and your communication with them.

I am also waiting on Citrus. A classmate of mine got the interview on Friday. Interestingly they sent me a question regarding my AAPIC match number last week, but I have not heard from them since. I was hoping that meant they were ready to invite me, but now I'm waiting on the rejection, since its after the deadline and invites have already gone out.

Also got a nice rejection from U Texas HSC on a Sunday afternoon. They reminded me that I do not have to interview to rank them, which is the only site that brought it up. I guess sites don't want to go to Phase II anymore than we do.

Waiting om Citrus as well. And like you, at this point expecting a rejection.
I only got 2 interviews (8 rejections, 2 nothing yet), how about you?

Here's to e-mailing sites that did not let us know by Dec 15th! :nono:

Best of luck as we *hopefully* wrap this process up!

5 interviews, 11 rejections, 4 waiting on replies! :luck:

I have two interviews, 7 rejections and that site in WV that does not do interviews.

I have 2 interviews, 11 rejections, waiting on 4 sites still. What a disheartening process.

Has anyone received a rejection for Didi Hirsch? I know that they sent out invites late last week, but have yet to hear from them either way. I believe that their notification deadline was Dec. 15th.

Is anyone else still waiting to hear either way from them? I know they were doing notifications via e-mail and I don't have anything. My last name has a tricky spelling and I'm beginning to worry that I somehow didn't get a message. If others are not still waiting to hear from them, I will follow up with them.

I would suggest following up with sites either way. I got a confirmed rejection when I sent one site an e-mail earlier. Also, I knew someone last year who followed up and was suppose to get an interview. I think it is worth it! At this point we have put both time and money into this process, so I know I want a definite either way!

Still waiting on Lyons (new jersey) VA and RAMS.... their notification dates are today so I am hoping to hear.

ViolinPsyd, did you hear anything from RAMS yet? I am waiting on them too and trying to decide when I am going to break down and contact them...
I spoke too soon, just got a rejection.

Phone invite to Trenton Psychiatric Hospital. Unsure of dates; still playing phone tag!

I see above that someone got a phone invite to Trenton, but has anyone heard from Ancora yet? Thanks!

Just got an e-mail from Louis Stokes Cleveland VA regarding the Neuro Track. It reads, in part:

We want to inform you that you remain under active consideration for a 2013-2014 position with us in the Track to which you applied. However, we are not inviting you for an onsite interview at this time.

I guess this means that I am on a waiting list for an interview and/or they will rank me. I will follow up with the TD to ask for clarification.

I also applied to Ancora and have heard nothing. I think they pushed their application due date back - at least I don't remember it being due on 11/26?? - so it's possible they changed their notification date without letting us know.

Ok, thanks! And congrats on Trenton! Still waiting on them...

would you mind sharing what you hear? thanks!

I am still waiting on four sites....has anyone heard from Assessment and Treatment Alternatives, DC Superior Court, Rapp. Community Services Board, or Haymount Institute (I know this site sent out invites, but any rejections)?

Thanks everyone

Hi all! Has anyone gotten a rejection from Albany Consortium? I know they sent out invites last week but I haven't heard anything from them and I have their notification date as Dec. 15.

Also, I received the e-mail stating that UCLA CAPS will notify individuals today regarding their interview status but haven't heard anything as of yet. I realize it is still early there (10:15am) but was curious as to whether anyone had heard anything.

Thanks!

Yep, me too, just got a rejection. Good luck to you!

I also have had no news from Rapp. Community Service Board so you are not alone in the waiting! Hopefully today?!

Me three! It is truly a bummer because I loved their program.

Some of these rejections I don't really understand- and some of the very few interviews that I have received equally perplex me.
I feel as if the sites where I felt that I would be BEST matched and actively pursued training opportunities to be a good match for have outright rejected me, while others who I feel that I could be a decent match for have extended interviews.

I guess that what makes me scratch my head is that, over the years, I have gone out of my way to meet with the current interns at my dream sites at conferences, community events, etc.
(Stalking might be a strong term, but I definitely went out of my way to know when they were presenting, to attend, introduce myself and ask a few questions...which was hopefully not creepy at all).
When I talked to the current interns, I was surprised at how many had little to no experience or advanced training with the population that the site specializes in.
For instance, they had little experience working with kids, no experience in the kind of therapy the program specialized with, their dissertation wasn't child focused, they had few advanced training experiences or classes with their population, etc.
Nonetheless, we are told in school to *Specialize* but not *pigeon-hole* ourselves to be good matches for the programs that we hope to intern in.

I find it odd that two of my three interviews are with agencies where I have an interest in working with their populations, but very little experience.
I am wondering, for Round II, if I should continue to apply for the places where I have experience that makes me "a good fit" for their program, or apply to more of these odd-ball sites where I have an interest but little experience.

What do you think?

(Also, I am trying to follow up to schedule my interview with AACI... has anyone else confirmed their interview there?)

Still waiting to hear from 6 sites... eek.

Has anyone heard (rejections or invites) back from any of theses sites??

- Albany Psychology Internship Consortium
- Friends Hospital
- Franciscan Hospital for Children

Just curious. Thanks for keeping us all updated!! 🙂

Haven't heard anything in a while...

I received a rejection from Franciscan Hospital last Monday.

I think what is considered a "fit" tends to be idiosyncratic to each site. For example, some research heavy sites who are invested in training hardcore academics, seem to value research publications over clinical experiences. From seeing other students' track records, you can be perfect in terms of having a good clinical foundation for their training but few publications and get cut, or not have relevant experience but lots of publications and get invited to an interview. Some sites want you to have lots of related experiences so that you can hit the ground running, while others explicitly say they prefer to train you in areas where you don't have much experience (or don't say that but secretly want it). In addition, although you might seem like a great fit in every way minus one little detail that would seem minor to an outside observer (e.g. you have never administered a particular assessment), that little detail might be huge to one site and irrelevant to another. It is frustrating because trying to sell them on your fit is really difficult, since what they see as a good fit is so subjective.😕

Ok, so Battle Creek VA opened a new track that they announced in the match news on 12/10, and Central Western Mass VA also opened a new track announced in today's match news.

Do you guys think that some people might not apply to these sites, who might have if they were open earlier, because they have their fill of interviews?

Second: Those of you still waiting on Geisinger - anyone contacting them today?

I'm still waiting on a few sites, decided to wait until tomorrow to contact for what I expect to be rejections 🙁

Interested in your thoughts.

For those who are applying to Lincoln Medical and Mental Health (Bronx, NY)

Has anyone received any word good or bad?

I was interviewed by them last year, I wasnt matched. But I remembered I didnt have to wait till January to get a response.

Has anyone heard from the St. Jude track at UT health science center? I know that the general program contacted applicants but wasn't sure about St. Jude. Thanks in advance!

From what I've seen on here, Lincoln Medical started calling for invites in late November. They seem to be doing rolling invites because multiple people have been invited on various days since the first invite.

I haven't received a rejection or an invite from Lincoln yet. No one has posted on here that they've received one either :\

I have received a few similar ones and my understanding is that you can still rank them, but I'd put them lower on the list (unless it's a top site for you).

Haven't heard anything in a while...

I got a rejection from Friends Hospital on 12/14/12

My DCT told me to wait a week to contact sites that offered me interviews on Friday but promised to contact me this week....a week?! I'm going to have to move in with my DCT to be able to afford to go to all my interviews if I wait until 3 days before Christmas to book a these flights!!

Grrrrrrrrr-----> that was my wallet sounding off!

Just got a generic interview invite for UCLA CAPS! Dates are January 2, 3, and 4, and interviews are scheduled online. There are in-person and videoconferencing options, though they state they prefer in-person.

So excited! I had mostly given up hope with this one, as I haven't gotten invites at any other UCC. Now I'm at 5 interviews, 18 rejections, and 1 more to hear from (UC Davis CAPS). Feeling a ton better today -- funny how just one more invite makes such a mental difference!

I am a current CAU student and decided to apply to the clinic located at my graduate program called Goodman Psychological Service Center. Goodman Center is only looking for students who attended CAU. They started their interview process fairly early. November 26 to November 30th. I was interviewed on November 30.

I really do not know how many people applied there and was invited for an interview. I know they are looking for 5 students.

Anyone from CAU applied there and was invited for an interview? What did you think about the interview? or do you know of anyone who applied there last year and was matched on Phase 1.

Curious about my chances of being matched there as I am really familiar with the structure of the clinic and also I have a good connection with some of the faculty at CAU. Also the fact that they did the interview so early makes me somewhat nervous because by now they probably already know who they are selecting.

I'm sorry to say, but I know that Lincoln will be sending out only rejections from this point on. You should be hearing today or tomorrow from what I've been told. I just see everyone asking about this site and even though i don't like to be the bringer of bad news I do have this information and thought it may possibly help someone with travel plans in some way :-(
