2014-15 cycle rant thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
It really is a great situation. I'm a reapplicant from last year so I know what it's like to get serial rejected from schools. I didn't give up hope until may last cycle, and it was a big let down. But now I can just sit back and relax for the remainder of the cycle.

If you don't get in this year, sometimes being the first applicantion across the AdCom desk can make a big difference. I got rejected by RVU right away last year, but was accepted right away this year. Timing can make a big difference.
Same here. I applied last cycle, but only to in-state MD schools. Much of my application was not in until very late in the cycle, and my GPA without grade replacement was really sub par. I've still applied to those schools just because of the economics, but I have really focused my energies on the AACOMAS schools and cycle. It has paid off for me so far, and I feel really good about my chances for admission this cycle. I've gotten 2 interviews so far (both in October), and still have 8 complete applications out there. I've not doubt that many of these will be rejections, but maybe I'll get one or two more bites. All we need is one. Glad you got yours.

Good luck nontrad. With two early IIs I suspect you won't have a problem this cycle. Best of luck to you.

I think we'll be ok. The rest of my list may be a bit top heavy, but the closer that the interviews get, the more relaxed I become.

What's up with silent rejections? I've been complete at some schools since June/early July and haven't heard a word. So annoying

At least your not alone in the "Alternate List Club" at MUCOM....

I'm beginning to feel really hopeless... still waiting for at least one ii and, even worse, still waiting for my DO letter. 🙁

What're your stats like? PM if you'd like.

Personally, I've been complete since early August and haven't heard a peep from a small handful of schools (Nova, AZCOM, CCOM) since.

The admission offices of both ccom and azcom have assured me they don't do silent rejections. Many have gotten hold emails/letters, and the fact I didn't get one is just odd. So either I'm on hold and they didn't tell me, or somehow they just haven't gotten to my application yet...

Ive been compete at
Ccom since June and haven't heard anything lol. I would honestly just prefer the rejection about now

A lot of my silence is from having a planned MCAT date i'm sure. I'm retaking on 11/7.

II from VCOM-Auburn and my state MD school (UNMC) so far.

Yeah that makes sense. I called CMU a couple of weeks ago and they told me I was basically on hold and they'll look at my app , but they never sent me an update. This is more what I mean; am I silently rejected or on hold neglected?

I think why schools are waiting so long to give you a rejection or an invite is because of your low mcat score. With the rest of your application being well rounded, they might wait to see other applicants who are submitting there apps now and giving invites with those with high GPA/MCAT. Just my opinion not sure how true it is.

Also I just submitted all my secondaries today (money issue), am I completely screwed because I am so late.

Stats 3.7, 3.7, 28

Oh yeah of course, but normally they send out a hold email in that situation. Silence for almost 5 months is really discouraging

I dont think there is a rhyme or reason. I've been waiting since early August and I've got an MCAT above the school average, gpa's at average.

whats the deal with a $1000+ seat deposit...? say goodbye to my savings account

Agreed haham especially because I have had two interviews but the majority of schools are waiting to extend II (or not I suppose) until my Nov 7 MCAT scores come out. So if I get offered a seat at one of them specifically before the other, I will have to place the deposit and then wait.

Also bummed I had to take the Nov 7 MCAT, waiting for those scores is the biggest hindrance in my cycle right now I think

I think you are right about the interviews. They wait a little bit to see if there are a lot of stellar applicants, then they start giving interviews to the ones barely competitive.

Also I don't think you are very late. I would consider sending in a secondary at the end of december late.

BOBBBBBAA!

Yeah it's not for everyone that's for sure! haha.

Only asking cuz am currently at boba place studying. Good wifi.
Boba is awesome. We used to have a pretty good place downtown but it wasn't very popular and has since closed.

Yeah I've seen a few places close down. Luckily there's a great one near my old community college that is actually decent!

They served tiramisu though and it was terrrrible.

There's a coffee place that makes the best tiramisu alcoholic beverage here (not the cake.) It is heavenly.

I feel this thread has strayed from ranting to random.

Not to ruin the party, but a German report showed that tapioca contains cancer-causing chemicals. You can look up more research on it if you want.

P.S. you don't have to believe that crap and still enjoy the drink, like me 🙄

Ugh I know 🙁 it's too good! There's addictive chemicals in boba!

Doesn't EVERYTHING cause cancer?

I'm convinced just living causes cancer. Unavoidable if you live enough years.

Extremely true. I took a cancer biology class a year ago. Even the oxygen we breathe (you know the stuff that keeps you alive) can become free radicals which promote cancer.

ranting that schools won't wait until your pending MCAT scores come in to decide on your application.

also that some schools won't tell you if they are waiting for your pending scores before reviewing your app or not.

Is this a retake? You had other interviews, and I don't know if they grant interviews w out it! but if you got two before the retake, I think you're sure to get more once your scores come in

yeah it's a retake.

Anyone else becoming discouraged to start school this fall? I've been reading a lot about how crappy our health care system is and all the stuff that goes on, it really gives me cold feet.

even if I end up making 50k a year or whatever, I still want to do medicine (at least at this point). I'm sure there are going to be tons of insurance, reimbursement, paperwork, etc hoops to jump through that will be incredibly annoying... but it's just in me. I feel like it's the only thing that I want to do. (there are a few alternatives that are completely non-related that I wouldn't mind doing if it came down to that extreme of a plan B)

No doubt, I agree. However besides he subject matter which I find endlessly interesting, I want to see my patients get better and prosper. How can we do this if it costs $50 for ONE albuterol inhaler? I was just reading about a guy who saw 3 different doctors, had 3 x-ray's, a CT and 2 MRI's done just for some shoulder pain, eventually to be told there is no structural evidence of injury, go see a physical therapist. Shouldn't that have been the first thing done? Or even referred to an OMM doc? If you find other evidence of it not healing, then you get a scan? Defensive medicine just seems like such a whirlwind of stupidity.

medicine is quite complex, indeed. all you can really try to do is be the type of physician you think is best.

I work in an Emergency room.. don't get me started on unnecessary testing. Not to get political, but folks always talk about people 'getting between you and your dr.' The problem is the system is set up so everyone has their hand in the pot, and something to gain.

Again I'm all for necessary diagnostic testing, but out system is set up for quantity of procedures and things we can do for you. Whether the pt is actually helped is another story.

DO 2019 woohoo!

unnecessary testing is a very real thing... even in my job as an allergy technician (administering tests and shots) I myself have probably done tests on patients that maybe didn't need it simply because I have a quota... you just feel like you're wasting their time but the doctor wanted it done.....
