2014-2015 APPIC (internship) interview thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Has anyone heard from the San Francisco VA this week? I know they sent mass rejections as well as phone call invites last week, but I have not heard a peep.
I actually logged in because I was wondering the same thing. I have not heard either way, and I wondered if I should check that they have/reviewed my application. I feared it had fallen through the cracks.

- Ann & Robert Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago

-Rejection (no tracks)
-Mass email from administrator with attachment of a personalized letter on letterhead word doc from the DCT

here's a question. has anyone received an invitation AFTER you saw the first round of invites go out on this thread and having not gotten one? in other words, did you get an invitation much later than the first round? just curious. i know some folks say until you hear, you don't know… but i'm curious about what those stats are.

I got an invite to the Salem VA (personal phone call) about a week after the first notification was listed on here. It's my sense (and I have absolutely no proof of this and am as in the dark as everyone else about this process), that the personal phone calls tend to go on for longer and you shouldn't give up hope. However, when the mass invites go out, and you're not on that list, you can essentially expect that the best you'll get is wait list status. I have no clue about the personal emails, though.

Hope this helps and good luck with the remainder of this process!

For any program specifically? I did for one program so far -- first round went out 11/20, then I got an invite second round 12/3. If you check out the first page of last year's thread you can probably get a better sense how often this happens (you'll see some programs had multiple notification dates, some pretty spread apart).

Did anyone else get the horrible string of 5 email rejections from UCSF-SFGH CAS.....accompanied by an email from an admin worker saying "My sincerest apologies. We erroneously programmed an email to you." :wtf:This seems to be a day for program f-ups. The worst part is I worked in that same program three years ago....and the TD wrote me one of my grad school LORs. *facepalm* This process makes no sense!!! /endrant
Because one rejection isn't painful enough...I mean, really, keep on rubbing salt in the wound.

I really don't either! My mentor suggested to rank it anyway, since we have the option and to increase the probability of matching. That is assuming I would be okay with ending up on an internship at a place I did not visit.
Yeah, that's what I was planning on doing too.

I get that sites interview a bunch of people and it takes a while to organize everything...but seriously...waiting for confirmation of interview days is a humongous pain in my patootti, especially when multiple invitations come in a day. I'm banking on getting my first choices...if I don't I'm going to have a huge issue.

While I can understand your frustration, please remember that while your situation is stressful, it is still a better situation than to be in by some. I imagine that there are individuals out there who may only have a few interviews.

Henry Ford Health Sciences interview date switch, please!

I am hoping that someone who received an interview at Henry Ford Health Sciences may be willing to switch interview dates with me. My interview is scheduled for January 9th and unfortunately I can no longer attend that date. There are no remaining openings at HFHS; however, I have spoken with Dr. Mateo and she noted that it is perfectly acceptable to trade dates with another applicant. I would happily handle all of the arrangements through Dr. Mateo.

In addition, I have a lovely hotel room with transportation to the site reserved, which I would be happy to transfer to you as well. I am also open to assisting with any financial problems related to rescheduling flights.

Please help if you are able! Thank you very much.

Yep, I got one under these circumstances. The site sent out mass invites, but I got a personalized one a few days later. Miracles do happen!

Yup. Salem VA and McLean. Both were weeks after I saw them on SDN.

Hi everyone! I am wondering if many other people have heard back from Boston Children's Hospital. I am considering sending a follow-up email tomorrow but would hold off if many other people are still waiting to hear after they emailed/called.

I'm sorry. I didn't mean to come off as insensitive. I didn't match last year, so I completely understand the frustration. It's just a totally different type of stress than I was anticipating and since most of my classmates matched last year I don't have much of an outlet for grumbles.

I agree. I have friends with no interviews and friends with many interviews--everyone is anxious! This process is naturally stressful because so much of it is out of our control. Hopefully we can all be mindful of that as we express it =)

6 days to go, good luck everyone!

I got a phone call from University of Wisconsin-Madison 5 or 6 days after the first person posted an invite on here. I waited a similar amount of time hoping to hear from Hines VA (they sent personalized emails) and they sent me a rejection letter today. So I think it's a crapshoot. But you really aren't out of the running until they say so, in my book.

Sorry, that's the same day I'm scheduled for. Good luck, hope someone can switch with you!

I got an invite to a site a week after the first round went out. It seemed like they were trying to fill up spots that were leftover after the first round went out. But hey, foot is in the door!

Of the two sites that ended up on the SDN list before I heard from them, both ended up being rejections.

I think this is another one of those things where there's so many examples on both sides of the equation that there really is not adequate assurance. Basically anything that can begin as, "I know someone who matched with [this bizarro and minimally likely scenario]...."

I too hope that you will find a solution. Your scheduling dilemma shows how broken all this is and how desperate we become. I wonder about phone interview or Skype? Good luck!

Hopefully this is good news for all of us... Cookies have been dropped momentarily.

I got an invitation on 12/4 after someone posted they received an invite on 11/21! I had written off the site.

Me too. I've moved on to pie...

Hi,

I was wondering how people have handled Open House invitations scheduling conflicts when the sites are only offering one day? I have 3 invitations for the same day, and a fourth invitation at a site that geographically I would not be able to get to in time the next day! One is an interview at a very competitive site - and the others are Open Houses at very good sites. Has anyone had luck in the past with visiting at other times (and if so would you mind sharing/private messaging me the program?). Being that these conflicts are almost half of my invites, I am hoping I can find a way to make it happen... Thanks for your help!

I went through about half a bag of Popcorn Indiana's Chocolate/Peanut Butter drizzle-kettle corn (seriously delicious)...at this point in the process I may be needing to up my game and go for cheesecake.

Best of luck with cookie coping and positive internship news!!

I agree --- there is always the exception. I received an invite to one of my sites a week after initial invites were sent out, so I am one of them. However, on average, Id say that most sites don't seem to be doing the rolling invite thing. So while we may not be completely out of the running after not getting an invite in the initial round, the odds are against us for that site. I've got 2 more that I am REALLY hoping I'll be that exception. Not holding my breath though.

Rejection from Towson University counseling center on 12/10 via mass email
Same. This is by far the nicest one I've received. So understanding and empathic...makes me regret that I did not get an interview.
