2014-2015 APPIC (internship) interview thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Well, I've heard that internships in CA are more competitive because folks want to live here or at least experience it for one year. I'm in CA and only got a few internship interviews from sites here.

Not sure if true, but I'd imagine internships in popular cities/states get more applicants than less popular cities/states.

That is very true. I am originally from NYC and wanted to stay with my fiancé, but received very few interviews in the area. Looks like I will have another year of long distance. Most NYC sites seem to take students who go to school there which is a bit disheartening since it is supposed to be a national matching process.

Anyone else had this experience? I live in the east coast, and am originally from California. I'm trying to get back to Cali, so I primarily applied over there. I got invited to all of my East Coast internship sites, minus one. I only got one invite to Cali. Anyone have a similar experience regarding rejection from locations far far away?

Did anyone get a confirmation date from Orlando VA? I have to try to reschedule another interview in order to attend, but I am hoping for confirmation first before I email the other TD to reschedule.

Not yet!

FINALLY heard from the TD via email this afternoon. I'm hoping you heard good news as well. Best wishes for the holidays!
Yes! Interview as well. 🙂. Eager to find out what dates they offer us. Seems like it's a set number of days around Jan 14-16...?

I know someone who matched at their 10th (and last) ranked site. Though I'm not sure if Twas actually her 10th site (if other sites had multiple tracks/positions she ranked prior).

Just to expand on this...last year, myself and those in my cohort matched all over the place. We go into this process expecting to match to our top three sites, or we fear that we won't match at all, based on the statistics. The statistics from last year indicate that there is an 81% chance of matching to our top three sites, and then there is about a 20% chance that we won't match at all. I know people who matched anywhere from their top choice, to their #4 choice, to their #7 choice, to their bottom choice (#12). Obviously, the number of interviews you have and how many sites you rank plays a huge part in this. Bottom line, if you have a site on your list that you just don't feel you would be happy at for a year, don't rank it. Because you could match to that site, even if it's #12 on your list. If there are some sites on the bottom of your list that could create a problem for you if you did match to them (e.g., not APA accredited and this is important to you), you'll need to really weigh the pros and cons of leaving it on or off your list. I wouldn't say it's common to match to one of your bottom sites, but it is definitely not uncommon.

Anyone have their date confirmed from Edith Nourse Rogers Memorial VAMC? Anyone?

I have four interviews in Boston...I mean...I'm sitting pretty and am very thankful...I just wanted to make my way back to Cali. Although with global warming...fate just might be doing me a favor keeping me in Boston.
GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!!!

-Site name: Children's Institute, Inc.
-Date notified: 12/22/14
-Invite or rejection: Invite
-Track (please specify even for general tracks): I applied to the general track
-How notified (mass email, personal email, phone): Mass email
-Interview dates offered: January 21, 2015
-Type and number of cookies eaten today: No cookies, but I had some Godiva chocolate!

same here! I asked if they had another interview date because that is literally be right between an interview in Cleveland and one in Boston, but I haven't heard back yet! Guess it's a general "take it or leave it" interview

Thank you. I still haven't heard back.
I received an mail from Kaiser Walnut Creek TD on Dec 15 and it looked like a mass email stating that she would follow up with a phone call to schedule an interview time. I did speak with her by telephone a few days later and scheduled an interview for late Jan. It seemed as if she was scheduling interviews as they fit into her work schedule, so necessarily only interviewing on specific days or times.

Has anyone received any e-mail confirmation or information from Tennessee Health Sciences Center? I received the one phone call invitation for an interview, but I haven't received any contact since then. Thanks!

Has anyone replied to a rejection email?
I replied to two because they were sites that were high on my list and I was hoping for feedback with an eye towards future involvement with the site (postdoc, etc.) Both training directors responded, one with immediate feedback via email, another offering to speak in January. I'm glad that I did, as one site (my initial top choice) explained they were no longer offering the secondary rotation that I was interested in, which helped me recognize it wasn't such a good fit after all.
I haven't been responding to generic form email rejections just as a formality or anything, doesn't seem necessary if I'm likely not going to have any future contact with the site anyway.

Has anyone replied to a rejection email?

Yes. In fact, I've responded to all of my rejection letters. I received an enormous amount of rejections and was really depressed/curious about what went wrong. In addition, I know that I may have to go through Round 2. I emailed all of the training directors asking them for individual feedback and so far many of them have gotten back to me with feedback. From my experience, a lot of the training directors understand how much hard work and money we put into this process and are happy to help with feedback. I feel better knowing how I can improve my application should i have to go through Round 2. *Crossing my fingers I won't have to!!!*

I did to a couple of sites that were high on my list. I had heard a couple stories about replying to rejection emails and thanking them for their consideration in a nice way that have led to a reversal of the decision and an interview invite. (This clearly did not happen to me.) Also, I've heard it's a good thing to do in case that site is in Phase II, though I would doubt they'd remember you had responded to the rejection. Mostly no one responded back to me, but one was very nice so I at least appreciated that. I did not ask for feedback, though.

Did you get any good feedback that would be helpful to share?

Did you get any good feedback that would be helpful to share?

Sure. The feedback wasn't very helpful but I have many more TDs to hear back from. Three got back to me telling me that they would be happy to share feedback in February. One of them said that I was a strong applicant but that the site wanted more research experience, another site said they were looking for more assessment hours, and a few sites had concerns about my program (that i unfortunately can't get into).

My supervisors, advisor, and I were pretty shocked at how I did in this process (let's just say OUCH it was not pretty...). I think that I screwed up on my autobiography essay (mine was a bit untraditional), which is part of the reason why I reached out to the internship training directors. I was and still am curious to see if any training directors will tell me that my autobiography essay was a problem. After my interviews are over I'm planning to re-write my autobiographical essay and prepare for Phase II. I'm hoping for the best but also trying to be realistic and calm.

Okay, so this is bugging me. Did anyone ever hear from Vanderbilt PCC? I got a mass rejection from the VA but never heard from the PCC. Should I just assume that I was rejected from both?

Thanks for sharing. What gives you the sense it was the essay, even if it was untraditional? You must've been confident enough to send it initially, right? I don't mean to pry, I'm mostly curious because I got quite a lot of feedback that my essays needed to be more boiler plate, but it didn't seem to hurt me too much. I've actually wondered how much sites read the essays.

Also- best of luck, don't give up hope! Just rock the interviews that you have.

what did you say in the email?

I only applied to the PCC, and was rejected. "Vanderbilt-VA Consortium in Professional Psychology" was in the subject of the email, and there was no mention of the PCC throughout the email. So my conclusion was that I was rejected from the consortium itself. Feel free to PM me if you'd like more clarification, or if you'd like to compare rejection letters.

This may have come up already but I was going to ask everyone's advice/opinion about interview days where the contact people say, "You will have some down time so bring a book or something to do." I had this at my first interview, but didn't bring anything, figuring I'd just talk to other applicants/current interns in the downtime. Which is what I ended up doing. I have another one like that coming up, and I'm just curious on your thoughts. I know each interview day will be different, and some may not even allow me access to other applicants or anyone to talk to. I certainly don't want to be on my phone the whole time (looks tacky and is actually super boring to me anyway). I feel like bringing a book looks like I'm disinterested.

Has anyone who will be interviewing at Princeton House Behavioral Health received any kind of schedule/details about where to go?

Has anyone received confirmation of their interview date at Edith Nourse Rogers Memorial VAMC (Bedford)? I really need to know so I can start booking things! Hoping they'll tell us today...

Still haven't heard about a date!! Anyone else?

No I have not received a confirmation from them either.

When you say you had an untraditional essay, what do you mean?

Wondering if anyone has been asked to do a writing sample on an interview? I was told for one site that I would have to do that, and that it would not be clinical and that I could not prepare. Any advice?

Has anyone replied to a rejection email?

I did and politely asked for feedback, while understanding this is a busy time for them. I received some (not very helpful) feedback. However, my top site that rejected me actually wrote back and offered me an interview. So I say it's worth it to politely ask.

Is anyone else interviewing (or interviewed last year) at the Madison VA? I'm trying to find out if it's a full day or half day interview for flight purposes.

Haha that's just terrible. "Don't even think you can outsmart this. You will have to suffer like the rest of the applicants." :diebanana:

I say bring a book if they told you to bring a book. You're right that you'll most likely just chat with other interviewees during down time, but it's good to have a backup. You'll also likely have a whole packet of info they'll hand you at the beginning of the day, that you can be reading through. Or you could bring their printed out brochure to read through if you want to look super focused on their program. But really, if they told you to bring a book, and then judged you for following their specific directions, that would be pretty strange.

Thanks for the good luck wishes, good luck back to you! I'm not sure if my autobiographical essay hurt me, because I haven't heard that from any TD's (yet), it's just a hunch. I was confident with my CV, LORS, cover letters, and the three other essays, and saw my autobiographical essay as being my weakest part of the application. I described my essay as "untraditional" because I discussed my experience of exploring psychology through art. I thought it was well written, but I think it didn't say enough about me as a person and as a clinician. I received a lot of feedback on that particular essay and struggled with it up until I clicked submit. Again, who knows? Perhaps that essay wasn't what hurt me and it could have been something else...all i know is that I received way too many rejections and I need to find out what went wrong if I need to apply again for Phase II. Can't wait for this process to be over!

Has anyone heard back from U Hawaii at Manoa UCC? Their notification date is Jan 1, but I'm out of the country and unable to get my voicemails and wanted to check in case they have been notifying a bit early.

I am waiting on this site as well - from past experience with them, they won't notify early!

Anyone hear what day they are interviewing with Orlando VA yet? Waiting to book a couple flights until I hear from them

Negative, also waiting. Thinking I'm just going to book what I can on Southwest to make changes easier.

I matched to my 9th site. Only happens to 1%. It can definitely happen and I feel like it isn't discussed much. It's an odd feeling, relief and excitement over matching mixed with disappointment over not matching at a top choice. Then of course guilt over feeling that disappointment because so many don't even match at all.

It would probably be healthy for this process if more folks who did not match to their top sites actually revisited this forum to talk about how their year has actually progressed. Often an "unfavorite" match can turn out to be wonderful and I don't think that experience gets enough airtime. And I expect there are folks who got their top spot and are not actually thrilled with the experience. Not sure how those stories would get told but it would probably hearten folks experience of Match Day to know that what was initially a disappointing relief ("At least I matched") can become a surprisingly good fit and successful internship ("SO glad this is where I landed.")

So I spoke with someone who is currently an intern about assessment writing tasks at interviews, and he said, "Bring your books." Of course my response was, "What?! You can use those?!" He told me that he saw applicants bring books and cheat sheets and openly use them during the writing task, and it apparently was not frowned upon. I cannot imagine this is true. Has anyone else heard this? And who wants to lug textbooks around the country?!

Years ago, I matched to my 4th rank. It was a great fit and worked out extremely well, although I felt bad that three sites passed on me. Ironically, I have been hired as a psychologist at 2 of the 3 places that didn't pick me, since I moved to the area after internship.
On the other side now, as someone who interviews potential interns, the best advice I can give you is to smile when you meet your interviewers and periodically through the interview. It sounds stupid, I know, but the smile conveys enthusiasm in a relatively low-effort way. And as we all know about mirror neurons, emotions reflect, so if you get your interviewers feeling happier, they will probably feel better toward you.

How does that part of the matching process actually work? Does that mean you matched there because you ranked them no. 9 and so did they? Match equals same ranking number?

No, it means that the sites cara ranked 1-8 ranked other people higher than her. Those people had also ranked those sites high and were matched there. You can look on the natmatch website for a video explanation of the match.

No, that would be way too complicated 🙂

For example, suppose Program A has one position. Both Applicants X and Y feel they have a very good chance of obtaining a position at Program A. However both in fact prefer other programs, Programs C and D, where they may be less desirable. Consider the Rank Order Lists below:

Program A (1 Position)
1. Applicant Y
2. Applicant X

Applicant X
1. Program A
2. Program C
3. Program D

Applicant Y
1. Program C
2. Program D
3. Program A

Applicant Y has listed programs according to his true preferences. Applicant X has listed programs according to likelihood of being able to obtain a position.

In the matching algorithm, Applicant X will first be tentatively matched with Program A. Next, attempts will be made to place Applicant Y into Program C, and if that is unsuccessful, into Program D. If Applicant Y cannot match with Programs C or D, an attempt will be made to place Applicant Y into Program A. Since Program A prefers Applicant Y to its current tentative match with Applicant X, Applicant X is removed from Program A and Applicant Y is matched with Program A.

Thus Applicant Y has not jeopardized his chances of matching with Program A by putting that program lower on his list. Similarly, Applicant X has not increased her chances of matching to Program A by putting that program higher on her list.

Similarly for programs, when an applicant is tentatively matched to a program, the program will retain that applicant until a more preferred applicant can be placed into the program. Only then will the program reject the less preferred applicant, and only then will that applicant attempt to match to a program lower on his or her list. A program cannot be bypassed by a less-preferred program on an applicant's Rank Order List, regardless of how the two programs ranked the applicant.

1. Does the Matching Program favor applicants or programs?

Neither. Both applicants' and programs' Rank Order Lists are used to provide the best match possible for each applicant and each program. Applicants' and programs' preferences are given equal weight in the process.

There does exist one fairly rare situation in which an applicant's preferences are favored. This occurs when two programs and two applicants have conflicting preferences, as in the following example:

PROGRAM A
1. Applicant Y
2. Applicant Z

PROGRAM B
1. Applicant Z
2. Applicant Y

APPLICANT Y
1. Program B
2. Program A

APPLICANT Z
1. Program A
2. Program B

Program "A" prefers applicant "Y", and program "B" prefers applicant "Z"; however, applicant "Y" prefers program "B", while applicant "Z" prefers program "A." In the matching process, this conflict (which research shows occurs for only 1 in every 1,000 applicants) is resolved by using the applicants' preferences.
